This was a VERY interesting experiment and quite a contrast in prices of wood as well and how they performed under the laser ... thanks Paul for posting this

Speed/Power settings are really going to depend on your machine and wood used. The best thing is to do is to try a test piece. I usually start tests at about 200 speed and 30% power and adjust from there.

Thanks so much for this video! It's obvious you spent some time on this, and it helps novice engravers like me more than you know. I am curious to a couple of things, if you don't mind. 1. What software did you use for this project? 2. What if any special preparation did you do for the images, particularly the ones that appear to have a photo of a person in them (Motorhead, Leonard Cohen, the fish, and perhaps the skulls)? I've attempted to engrave a photo on birch plywood with very little success. I understand settings are generally unique to the machine and geography, but I also know that image preparation is key, as well as whether you use a positive or negative of the image. Thanks in advance for any help! Clay

Great to see comparisons. The quality of the engraving is incredible. I'd be really interested to know what settings you used on the cherry and maple as I use similar in the uk but can't get that detail. Thanks

Thanks, setting vary per machine... on that 50w laser, it was about 100 speed and 40 power. Start slow and work up from there. Reducing your air assist may help too.

Thanks. Speed and power is really dependent on your machine and materials. On my 50w, I ussally run at 40% power and 100 mm/s speed for Softwoods and up to 80% and 100 mm/s for hardwoods. You can of course go faster if needed, but i found slower speeds give better results on my eBay machine.

I ussally run around 100MM/s speed and 40% power on a 50 watt machince. You're machine will probably be different though. Also, on harder woods, you may need to increase the power by 5%-10%. Hope that helps!

Hello I’ve recently purchased a laser 30watts . I’m having a problem sealing engraved photos. What ever I use makes the engraved photo to dark. Looks great before sealing. How are you sealing your work ?

Maybe try to use Minwax Polycrylic sealer, it's a clear sealer.

If you allow me a trick, Apply before to the wood a layer of ammonium bromide or Borax (dissolve them in warm water 1 unit per 10 of water). Once dry, the wood will be ready for an engraving, deep black with a higher contrast.

You can do some basic greyscale editing in lightburn. If I need todo more, I use Photoshop. Thanks for watching!
