    Thanks.. and yeah I do try to add some kind of comedy especially on the longer videos.. they're not all gold but better than not trying at all.

    What were your laser settings for your engrave? I'm trying to do something similar but can't get my engrave deep enough. Did you do multiple passes?

  • @InteractiveRealm

    You should be able to achieve the depth in one pass, though it depends on your lasers power. Using 1/8th acrylic, you only need to engrave half the depth on each side and sandwich the acrylic in the middle. I dont have exact settings but if you're using a glowforge basic or pro, the basic engrave setting should get you what you need.. maybe with some adjustments.

    Nice. I’d like to seen how you made the program for the pieces. New to laser and don’t have those skills yet

    It's really just about tracing an image by adding vector shapes on top of it. So for the wave, I found an image of the ocean and another image of a wave and started adding shapes to makes an artistic version of the images. I was limited on colors so I used the closest colors I had. The AZ flag was pretty much the same, but easier as there where a lot of straight lines. The hard part is setting up the shapes for the laser. I have shapes for cutting the colored acrylic, shapes for engraving the plywood which are the same shapes as the colors but is basically like a border so it only engraves the edges and then another set of the same shapes with a slightly larger perimeter for cutting the plywood so the color fits within the holes. Plus the plywood has to be copied and flipped in order to do both sides. It doesn't make for a very interesting video though. What laser do you have? Feel free to email me questions if you want. My email is in the about tab on my channel page here.

    Looks great, but why would you have it engrave and then cut right over the engrave lines? Wouldn't it save time to bypass the engrave step?

  • @InteractiveRealm

    @InteractiveRealm

    It's not cutting over the engraving.. it's right next to it. The engraving makes a lip on the inner side of each frame to hold/sandwich the acrylic pieces in place.

    @@InteractiveRealm AHHHHHH, got ya, makes sense lol. My forge should be here next week and I'm going to try something like this, but I'll probably try to pour some resin in the holes. Thanks for the info though, great work

    Do you have these instructions written out? I can't figure out how you got the acrylic to sit on the wood without falling through. It looks etched then cut, or the outline was cut thicker for the back?

    I just saw the answer below! 🤣

    I don't have them written... but basically front and back are the same (back is obviously flipped horizontal) but each cut out is also engraved creating a little lip around the cut. The depth of the engrave is half the width of the plywood. Plywood and acrylic are both 1/8th thick. So engravings are 1/16th thick. But combine each side together it creates a space for the acrylic to set into making not fall out.

    How do you set up the acrylic cuts so that they fit perfectly in the openings without falling through? I tried to do something similar using an inkscape vector image so the acrylic pieces matched up to the cuts in the wood but they were a slight bit smaller so they fall through.

  • @InteractiveRealm

    On each of the plywood sides I engrave about a 1/16th edge around each of the cutouts for the acrylic. Then I make my acrylic pieces about 1/16th larger to fit within the engraving. This way each of the plywood sides sandwich the acrylic pieces. I only glue on the plywood between the acrylic. So no glue should be seen on the acrylic pieces if you're careful when gluing.

    @@InteractiveRealm How do you "Then I make my acrylic pieces about 1/16th larger to fit within the engraving."? I am trying to use Inkscape to do it, but it doesn't scale irregular shapes in order to get a 1/16 inch all around. Can you help? Thx.

    @Sharad Kumar I don't use Inkscape but it's not about scaling, I would use offset (or perhaps an outline) to extend the shape in all directions. Hope that helps.
