For such a cheap laser you can get a lot done! I made my investment back within a couple months.

what is the diameter of the coasters?.... I am thinking 3"?. Also, if you could measure the tip of the laser head to the material, what is the distance? (BTW...I ordered some of the baltic birch sheets from your links....hope you get a commission)

Keith Schlotthauer thanks. I made these coasters a total of 4”. The material should be around 2” or 50mm from the head of the laser. I mostly did trial and error.

The air assist is a great idea. If you use one of the replacement laser nozzles, (like the blue one for example), you will need to shorten the exhaust port and remove the standard laser bed because the replacement nozzle is much longer and will smash into the standard, unmodified exhaust port. In any case, remember to check and clean the lens frequently. Nine times out of ten, a noticeable drop in laser power is due to a dirty lens. I could gone on.....

Nice work. :) Temp monitoring is a must have. But pressure switch for laser protection is must have thing too. Imo. Cheap water pump failure can kill laser tube in no time.

I just got mine...actually coming today. I ordered if off eBay (from the USA) and making payments (through paypal credit) over the course of a year. It is about $40/month. I am hoping that I can make at least a couple of hundred a month so it will pay for itself.

Thanks! Depending on the artwork and the quantity I charge anywhere from 2-5 per coaster. 5 is typically for double sided.

Great video. Have had my machine about a week how. Can I ask you one question. How do you get rid of the burnt wood smell?

johnmcvideo I personally like that smell lol. It will hardly become less smelly but if you seal it with something it will normally take on that smell. If you brush the burned edges with a wire brush that might help cut down the smell as well.

How long you can work without getting water too hot ?

Could you do a video walking through the upgrades you did to the laser head and where you got your bed from? Or possibly links to where you found the information to upgrade the laser? This low-cost engraver is intriguing.

Thanks for the tip on using the tape and the thermometer. I was worried about burning my wood. I've been trying to decide if I could start engraving wood a d whether this machine is worth it. It is with knowledge as to how to use one.

@@ChippedBuilds Alot of people say that the k40s laser is hard to focus, but the elbow grease is worth the price. I can't expect everything to be perfect for $350 and I know I'm going to have to pay out of pocket for a better computer program, better parts etc. But the greatest thing is if I can just learn how to make a few things with this, I could return the investment. Can you choose how deeply you want to cut the wood on this on the computer settings? ( so whether you want a deep engraving/ cut or a slight etching ). Also, do you have any knowledge of how this works with different woods? Eg cedar, pine, redwood?

Jane Perreira the software I use is k40 whisperer which is free and good to start with. You control the cutting “depth” by passes and power. So it’s easy to figure out. And there are a ton of people who share their settings with everyone about the Wood they cut. Even with all the upgrades you can buy it will still be way less than a glowforge or another laser cutter

@@ChippedBuilds oh yeah I know. It only makes sense to get this one for me! I think that when someone parts with $1500-$3500 I think they dont realize just how much money that is! It's much better off in savings, and getting this one!

I noticed you have the air assist nozzle upgrade I've been looking at getting it but it doesn't fit the stock focus lens. do you have any recommendation on a lens to fit the nozzle you have, I believe it is the same one I want to get on ebay; it fits a 20mm and a 15mm.

Thanks. I dont use it as often but that is only because I started a new job. I use it about once a month now but it is still working like the day i bought it. I hope to do some Christmas ornament videos with it in the next few weeks.

What was the thickness of the plywood you used? I can’t get mine to cut 3mm and I have air assist and modified bed.

Micro CNC it’s 1/8” not sure what that is in mm. Could be your mirrors aren’t aligned so it’s not cutting all the way through?

Hi im new to the k40 laser but noticed the height difference from where your laser is to your material.. i seem to be doing passes after passes and im wondering if i should raise it closer to laser to get better cuts in shorter passes?

Your material might be too far away. I just did some test cuts of a square to find the sweet spot.

When I click the engrave, after a few minutes I get a sign popped up that states out of memory. What does this mean. This only happened the last I tried to engrave. I never had any trouble before this. Can you assist me in fixing my problem. My computer is only using 5% of the hard drive. Thanks

I haven’t run into that error. Have you tried restarting your computer? Sometimes the usb cable is the problem with this laser. I ended up upgrading mine to a better one and had a lot less problems.

What's the biggest thing you can engrave with this and I see everyone using really thin material can you use a 1x12 plank?

Are you talking about the thickness. I have cut through up to 1/4 material. I think you can go a little thicker but I haven't tried it. If you are only doing engraving then you can do really thick pieces. You just have to adjust the height of the head of the laser.

Some of the units I've seen would only engrave a 40mmx40mm if my math is right that's a roughly 1 inch x 1 inch area, your coasters are bigger than that can you engrave like a 1 foot by 1 foot picture?

@@troybailey6268 The coasters are 4".Since I took out the stock bed The useable size is 14 1/2 x 10 1/5. That is the max area to be cut/engraved. The thickest thing I have engraved so far was 2in thick. ill have to do more tests to see what the max thickness is.

Mama Bear's She Shed Tracy Keaton the price varies. I got mine for about $320 from eBay but that was a risk. If it had been broken it would have been very hard to return it or anything. On amazon they are about $450 but you can easily return it if you get it through there.

I put tape on the wood to reduce the burn marks and that way I don't have to do much sanding to the piece. I use painters tape. amzn.to/2K6mvR8

You need to lay out your cuts better on your stock. You are wasting material. Lower your overhead a little by doing that.
