A multi-billion-dollar development on the Las Vegas Strip includes plans for a “technologically advanced entertainment and sports arena” and several ultra-luxury hotels and residences.
It’s a play to attract an NBA team to Las Vegas, and it’s not the only one. For the past year and a half, the buzz has been building around the NBA coming since LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal each said they want a piece of a Las Vegas team. A $10 billion project to build a 20,000-seat arena in the south valley made headlines in June of 2023.
The newest project was announced Monday morning by real estate developer LVXP for the 27-acre site known by longtime Las Vegans as the original home of Wet’n’Wild - between the Fontainebleau Las Vegas and SAHARA Las Vegas. The project is described in a news release as “transformational” and would advance the development of the north end of the Strip. Plans call for features including a retail plaza, a state-of-the-art convention space and a “destination” casino.

I've gotta say - props to Vegas. The whole region has become a boom town for sports over the last decade and they just keep expanding even more. Would love to see the A's settle there once they get the Tropicana site figured out and a NBA expansion team to Las Vegas would be such a smart move. I do agree with Brodie though that it seems to make much more sense to have the team play at the T-Mobile Arena.

Seattle & Las Vegas most certainly will get expansion NBA teams. Sadly growing up as fan of the Knicks when they last won a title, I have lost a lot of interest in basketball. The devaluing of the big man and the emergence of a 3 point chuckfest league is a major turn off. NBA doesn’t care about older fans like me since I’m not in the demographic they care about. Personally I would prefer Seattle Super Sonics and the Kentucky Colonels be resurrected. 3 pt line needs to be pushed back and the court widened.

the Oak View Group headed by Tim Leiwike also spearheaded & did Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. At first Seattle fans were really skeptical when their plan was to completely renovate what was Key Arena. But they sold their idea that they could finance themselves with bringing an NHL expansion team and down the road return the NBA to Seattle City officials. Once the deal was finalized the NHL came calling. So far everyone in Seattle loves Climate Pledge Arena. & very suitable for basketball too. We all know once the new NBA media deal gets done within the year NBA will announce expansion with Seattle & Las Vegas getting teams.

It sounds logical. Some of these owners don't like/don't want to share facilities. That means they would have to share profits and cost. The Raiders didn't have a good relationship with the A's while sharing the Coliseum, which is a part of the reason why they left Oakland for Vegas. Mr. Davis still doesn't like the A's organization to this day. #2 One sport is more popular than the other, which also comes into play. #3 Look at the Bears and White Sox situation in Chicago. The White Sox is requesting the State and the city of Chicago to pay 100% for a new stadium. The Bears is asking the city of Chicago for $2 billion on a $4 billion plus project in Chicago. Both of their current taxpayer funded facilities that they play in are not paid for. Which negates all of this "pie in the sky, delusional " revenue estimates that these organizations make. Which means the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois shouldn't even be having any conversations about spending taxpayer funds on stadiums and arenas. Let them go. Like Arizona let the Coyotes go because that NHL team wasn't generating the projected/expected revenue to justify the expenditures of valuable taxpayer funds. That these teams don't share profits with the public.

@@brodiebrazil My point is, it would be the Fenway Sports Group, of which LeBron is apart of, bidding for an expansion NBA team. LeBron would be the face of said franchise, but it wouldn't be LeBron himself bidding for a team; it would be John Henry.

@@brodiebrazil It might be naivety on your part, but in Boston media, it's well-known Henry wants an NBA team in Vegas, LeBron will be the face of it; likely as a primary stakeholder of said team (money is fluid like that). It's a matter of if the new team shares a venue at TMobile or builds their own.

@maxpowr90 lol your disappointed in Brodie? He just quoted Lebron’s interest in owning an NBA team and his interest in being a part of the NBA Vegas team. Not sure why you’re overreacting because Brodie didn’t dive into LeBron’s ties to the Fenway Sports Group.

@@HHSGDFootballJPD They do it via arena construction. Far too many arenas are built along the lines of what you have in Phoenix, Brooklyn, SLC, San Francisco, Inglewood, Atlanta, Charlotte, San Antonio, Orlando, Indianapolis and others I'm forgetting. Which is to say constructed for basketball only instead of what was always traditionally basketball and NHL hockey. And if the NHL has nowhere to play they are SOL. See the Coyotes as proof of that. To be fair the NHL doesn't do anything to help their own cause - not sure why they don't given their still sad dependence on gate revenue in this day and age- otherwise they'd make a case to the city and county that approves said arenas that they should only approve it if its built for NHL hockey too, since hockey plays a lot of games and its fans spend a lot of money. Only benefits the community to get max use out of an arena, especially given how pro teams can relocate. I can guarantee you that the Coyotes would still be in Phoenix right now if there original arena had been designed for NHL hockey too. Oh, and Utah is a nothing market to the NBA. Players don't want to play there and the league doesn't want them to win. Its one of their "cannon fodder" cities for the big markets.

@@geoff3103 They can; it's just not optimal. And I can't blame the NBA for Larry Miller wanting to build an intimate, modern arena for his team to play in WELL before there was a thought about a hockey team going to Utah. Nor can I blame the NBA when Bruce Rattner bought the Nets and wanted to build an arena for an NBA team in between two hockey arenas. Just because the NHL doesn't find these buildings suitable until the overall situation is poor doesn't mean the NBA is trying to get in the way.

@@HHSGDFootballJPD wrong, it means exactly that. And no they can't play in those arenas. See the Coyotes, Islanders as proof of that. And yes, the NBA does it on purpose because they know long-term the NHL won't stay there. Which is good for the NBA since they are their competition in the winter time. I don't blame the NBA either, having a monopoly on a winter sport is good for business. Thats what you do, screw the other guy as much as you can. But they still do it. However, those arenas are approved by the city and county and use public money. And thats where the NHL should make their case to the politicians. It only benefits everyone for those arena to be used to the fullest of their capabilities, and that means they should be built for NHL hockey in mind too. Especially since hockey fans tend to have more money and play the same amount of games as basketball. In other words, dumping money at the arena and in the neighborhood. Benefits everyone. Hockey and basketball have been sharing arenas forever, no reason why they shouldn't other than cheapness and greediness from the NBA. and its been a new strategy of the NBA to do this to hockey.
