Larry King Mutual Radio 1982

Фильм және анимация

Larry King talks about his job in 1982 from WDVM's Saturday Magazine. Lots of good footage of the Mutual Studios in Arlington, Virginia where Larry did his overnight radio show before joining CNN.

As a kid, I'd listen to Larry's show every night. What an interesting array of historical figures I learned about through the lens of Larry King. He was honestly a pioneer.

I had the pleasure to sit in that guest seat at the Mutual Radio studios in Washington, D.C., and be interviewed by Larry King in middle of the night of June 13, 1984. I was the editor of a national magazine called "Collectibles Illustrated" and we were sponsoring the World's Fair of Collectibles that weekend at the Washington Convention Center. Larry was very engaging as an interviewer and we talked about old comic books, baseball cards, Beatles records, tin toys and more that night. I realized the full power of his show the next Monday when I got back to my office in New Hampshire and over 2,000 letters from his listeners greeted me.

Larry could cause public reaction even if he didn't intend to. His objective interview of John Dean helped calm the anger that followed him & today people who recall that era barely remember him.

Thank you so much for saving this and sharing it. I grew up listening to Larry King on the Mutual Radio Network. Whenever I used to wake up in the middle of night my adrenaline would rise at the chance to turn on my alarm clock radio to get the opportunity to listen to the King.

Recall listening to Larry on "The Mutual Radio Network" during Halloween as he talked about the black 🐈‍⬛️. Your imagination took over as a high school junior. If anyone has that from 1979-80 you've got a gem.

I disagreed with Larry King on just about every political issue- but, what an excellent interviewer! This was the time when talk radio was fresh and really fun, in my opinion. I went into talk radio (WCOA, Pensacola) in '83 in fact. Sure miss those days!

@BigBingFan I would also like to find those shows from Mutual. The night John Lennon died, Larry was unbelievable. I was a caller on a few of those shows. Sure would like to find any of them. I remember the "Chair" well. Larry (and the callers) milked the chair for at least a year or two. :-)

Is there anywhere, kind commenters, who can steer me towards archived (and downloadable) Larry King radio shows from the Mutual Broadcasting days? One really funny show was when Ronald Reagan debated John Anderson, and Pres. Jimmy Carter was too chicken to debate the two, and Larry constantly reminded everyone of "The Chair," symbolizing the vacant chair Carter was too chicken to sit in. Very funny night. Does anyone know any website where you can download his old Mutual radio shows? Thanks!

My father was in WW2 and was a rear gunner in a Grummin Avenger torpedo plane on the Carrier Hancock. He called in to Larry King's show some time around 1982 when Larry's guest was Russel Spurr, author of "A Glorious Way to Die". This was the story of the sinking of the Japanese Battleship Yamato. I had this episode on a cassette tape, but I lent it to a family member who lost it. Does anyone know where I might be able to find recordings of Larry King's shows around that time? Having that recording again would mean a great deal to us. Thank you.

This was BEFORE CNN grabbed him three years later, and he was the most popular name in cable news... AND this was right before Bill O'Reilly stole all of Larry's thunder, prior to FOX News Channel's birth.
