I remember watching this fight when it aired on ABC TV ch 7. It was broadcasted as "Night of Champions" with 4 consecutive title defenses. Gregory beating Johnson for the light heavyweight title, Weaver knocking out Tate in the 15th round for the WBA heavyweight title, Sugar Ray successful KO against Green and concluded with this fight and I stayed awake watching every fight on a Friday night

Larry Holmes, this 18th day of July in 2020 at 17:10, rates 5th best heavyweight champion of the world, topping my list being Jack Johnson marginally ahead of Muhammed Ali and Joe Louis. The 4th spot belongs to Jack Dempsey and there in the 5th is Larry Holmes,6th George Foreman,7th Gene Tunney,8th Joe Frazier,9th Vladimir Klitscho and the 10th is for Rocky Marciano. The Galvenston giant I maintain was the greatest in the sense that he held the world championship at the time when the situation was horrible for people like him and surprisingly he prefered public to hate him rather than love him.He once said"I am black and they never let me forget it.I am black, alright,I'll never let them forget it.He made white people hate so intensely and he did not care.

Like the Buffalo Bills in their Superbowls, Leroy Jones was a legitimate heavyweight contender but just couldn't beat Larry Holmes in Larry's prime. Sad, but that's how it goes. Leroy wasn't a bum nor a blimp--He just fought the wrong guy. (Holmes' thumb in the third didn't help, either.)

@@emzid5105 it was probably the best fight of his career in my estimation... It's also my favorite because he was also out of shape a bit...you can see that he didn t respect Weaver until a couple left hooks arguably put him down. Maybe Weaver wasn t the best boxer out there, but as Larry found out, he was quite capable and hit pretty hard. He may have underestimated Weaver, but he won that fight with heart. As late as the 10th round Holmes got wobbled ( think it was a straight right )and even into the 11th he took a stiff left,so he pooled his strength and loaded up on that tremendous uppercut. Maybe one of the best fights that division had, for the era.

I also think that Holmes who was always searching recogntion tried to punch instaed of boxing vs weaver, that was a big mistake and like you said, it was nevethless one of his best fights cause he showed a great heart.

@@Ffeoli1039 Well...a lot of fighters beat Mike Weaver, especially early in his career before he fully committed to the sport...but, in retrospect, describing it as a disgrace is probably too strong a word. Larry fought everyone and dodged no one. It was a time of very sparse competition in the heavyweight division. Ali, Frazier, Norton, Foreman, Quarry, Lyle...they were all gone. Cooney had been unmasked as a seriously flawed fighter by none other than Larry himself. Larry was reduced to fighting his own version of the "Bum of the Month Club" and LJ certainly was in that category. Happy he didn't get hurt and Larry, for all his tough guy talk, despite all of the pre fight hype and animosity, Holmes was genuinely a very nice guy who wasn't out to hurt anyone. You could see he without a doubt, pulled many punches and didn't want to seriously and permanently injure Leroy.
