I saw Sly and the Family Stone in 1968 in Detroit. Larry Graham thumped and plucked up a storm! Amazing.

Larry Graham is the inventor of the thump base style. and no one else can say it. he’s been doing that since the 60s. The rest of those people started in the 70s and Larry hasn’t gotten his just do about it. they should appreciate this man while he’s here. That funk music has influence practically all the music that we listen to today from hip-hop. as far The music of hip-hop that strong deep thump comes from funk. All the dance music from disco and especially club music. Club music comes from the dance music that Black people used to listen to and that was funk music that we used to dance to. James Brown came up with the funky beat and Larry put it into bass music. the base in reggae, Larry Graham’s base, it was around before the deep base of reggae and anything else with a deep bass in it

I totally dig Larry Grahm, Sly & The Family Stone, "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)", "Pow" etc. Larry is the reason why funk bass sounds so cool and this video perfectly sums up his story on his invention of thumpin and pluckin the electric bass which everyone else calls "slap bass"! LOVE this video, I wish I can hit the thumbs up twice or more for this video, I would thump and pluck that thumbs up button hundreds of times for this awesome video!!!

Man! I was listening to Larry when I was a elementary school aged kid! Loved his look and his "thumping" It all started with his work with his Mom, then Sly & the Family Stone and then our minds were totaled blown when Graham Central Station came out! If you haven't already... all bass players should collect all the Graham Central Station music, it will show you just how funky thumb-plucking bass is supposed to sound from the man who invented the style. Thank you, Thank you for uploading this video!

sly did way more than he gets credit for. he wrote the bass line for and played it on if you want me to stay, and i imagine he did the same for many other tracks for which people give larry credit. not to say larry wasn't great, but he was'nt on sly's level and niether were any of those other people.

I’m looking at a couple of the comments and some people can’t stand to hear the term slap bass. As a fellow bass player, I get so irritated with people debating unnecessarily on whether Larry Graham is the Godfather of Thumping & Plucking or Slap Bass. Thumping & Plucking, Slap Bass, IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT IT’S CALLED! IT’S THE SAME THING! The point is that he invented the style and has influenced many other bass players lives with it.

Not true ! When "certain" people rebrand , rename an art form it's very wrong. Try renaming Baroque Classical music. Slapping something is completely different than Thumping it. Try thumpiing your girls forehead , and then turn around and Slap her. LOL

He is phenomenal on the bass , Tommy Cogbill would put Vaseline on his plucking fingers so the bass would sound like it was bouncing ! You hear that on Aretha Franklin records like, Respect, Chain If Fool, Think, Since you’ve been gone !
