Larry Carlton Quartet with Louie Shelton - Smiles and Smiles To Go

Музыка

30th May 2014 The Tivoli, Fortitude Valley - Now this was a surprise to the audience to have not one but two of the guitar greats that walk this planet on the same stage, and of all places Brisbane (The Tivoli). Before you all send me comments like is Louie going on the rest of the Australian tour ? Answer I don't know , I think Larry just asked an old friend to come and join him on stage for some fun as Louie lives just down the road on the Gold Coast.

I've made lot's of mistakes in life but the one thing I got right was learning how to play guitar. I'll never be a Larry Carlton or a Louis Shelton but at least for awhile everyday I can be ME. Play on brothers and sisters...

I attended a master class with Carlton a couple of years ago. He's the real deal. I wasn't destined to devote enough time to music to make any headway, but I love those who did and who made being alive a little more fun.

I heard him speak of some lessons he took with Joe Pass maybe? Some major jazz player. It seems his instructor told him to play a blues improve, but in 8th notes only.

When I saw him live in Mexico City year 2009 he was playing one of his greatest hits. I shouted him Smiles and Smiles to Go! He ended this hit, left the electric guitar and then he started to play an acoustic guitar with Smiles and Smiles to Go. At the end of the concert he autographied my DVDs and my CDs from him and we took some pictures together. One of the greatest nights of my life!

I loved Louie's solo, especially when he really sunk his teeth into it around 5:25. But equally impressive is his backing he gave during Larry's solo, so tasteful and reserved, yet adds so much. Playing in a two-guitar band that's something I always took pride in, providing subtle backing to my dear friend, doing everything I could to make his solo great. He always did the same for me. It's a beautiful thing.

Great musicians can't be rated on their technical prowess alone, the real gift comes from those who have that creative ability to know which notes and chords to play and when to play them. These two have that gift in spades.

We also heard Louie’s playing on Summer Breeze, Diamond Girl and other Seals and Crofts recordings. He produced and played on all their hit songs and hit albums. Those are stellar recordings, rivaling Steely Dan’s early 70s records for sheer excellent sound, impeccable musicianship and smart pop production, imho. I say this as a lifelong DanFan. When I first made it to a Seals and Croft’s show in 1973-ish, Louie was the bandleader/lead guitarist..might have been the only tour he went on with them. Lucky to catch him live that night. Idk why Louie’s Seals and Crofts credits aren’t mentioned much these days except maybe he wants it that way.

Wow - as a former player I thought I was pretty up on important guitarists, but until 2 days ago I had never heard of Louie Shelton. I guess I figured "Last Train to Clarksville" was Tedesco, or who knows who. Shelton is obviously consummate, great. I guess I should be embarrassed having never come across his name...

You know, that's one of the great things about youtube, it introduces new generations to many things, in this case, great guitarists of the past. A lot of people didn't know Jerry Reed was a great guitar player either but youtube has brought them into the fold. No need to feel embarrassed, just enlightened, and better off for the experience. Just watching this inspired me to dust off my 335 and give it a run around the block. Hope it does the same for others. Cheers and take care....
