That Elnoe kid... the fact that he kept the beat perfectly during the free flowing first part of the guitar solo with nothing else going on, no click track... that right there is so much harder to do than he makes it look. All of them where not tight at some part. But playing this turns your brain around and i cannot play this myself either :D The most obvious was the guy with the fancy camera movement at the part with the bass line. I have the exact same problem with my right hand and and my right foot. The foot doesn't listen and is slightly behind when playing the exact same pattern. The thing about rhythm and separating the good from the not so good is feel. You feel and know without thinking about it, if something is off. I have very good feel about music and rhythm and I believe it's like a gift. If you don't have it you gonna have a bad time. For sure it is learnable to some point but if you don't feel it and you wanna be a drummer... Hard times. I play in a little trio with piano and voice. The singer attended a very professional and expensive singing school even to that point that she could give lessons herself if she would pay 50k for the license. My point is she knows how to sing and knows what to do with her voice. What she didn't learn is knowing when to start singing by just listing to the song. She has to learn it for every song. I'd know instantly when to start singing just by listening and this makes improvising hard because she is not confident. That's why I'm thinking it's either you have it or not and it's what separating the good from the best.
@sam_the_man

@@lerx1980 I agree. I have a friend who cannot even clap along to a simple 4/4 beat pop song. He can’t do it on the 1’s and 3’s and he absolutely can’t do it on the 2’s and 4’s lol. I’ve tried to teach him multiple times over the years. He just doesn’t get it and he never will and I have no idea why because it’s like the easiest thing. Even birds can bob their head to a beat. Yet some people just don’t seem to be able to grasp rhythm.

@drftr6073
3 жыл бұрын
lol yes, a great recovery is way more impressive than playing without errors imo, because although you can reduce them to a minimum, there can always be errors in playing, maybe you break a stick for example, being able to hop back on that groove is what's important
@Aaronmac404
3 жыл бұрын
Any musician/teacher/professional worth their salt finds ways of addressing when someone makes a mistake in very creative, constructive, and uplifting ways. It's absolutely no surprise that someone as musically practiced and rhetorically sound as Larnell has the ability to do just that. It's okay to think "They made a mistake there" or "their timing is off" as long as it's from a place of wanting to help them improve, and the way you choose to verbalize it and bring it up with the person makes all of the difference. Edit; Also, Larnell has a tough job here. His parts on Snarky Puppy tunes are extremely complex, so he basically has no choice but to take a more laid back approach to reacting to people trying to replicate them out of fairness.

The best part of this video is Larnell's obvious love for what he does, and the joy he takes in seeing people take on his music.
Larnell's reactions here are priceless. Not just a musician, but an educator. And the fact that no matter how dope he is or how famous he gets, he still just sits and enjoys videos as a FAN, because that's what we all were before we played. A lot of the Snarky guys are like this, and will sit and talk about music and gear with you like any other person at a show. When I saw them, I simply asked for a pic with Mike League, but then proceeded to ask me if I'm a musician and we spent a good 20 minutes talking about our favorite amps. Idk I know I'm kinda rambling but it just warms my heart greatly.

We definitely need a line of shirts with Larnell’s likeness on them saying “yeah, uh huh!”
I didn't know how much I needed Larnell reacting to his own drum-covers. This guy is sunshine.
Larnell: "Ya'll spent some real time on these tracks, man." I hope he understands that he inspired generations of percussionists around the world with what he did with Snarky Puppy. I don't play percussion, at all, yet I'm inspired to perfect my craft to be able to sit and listen, one day, to others doing the same thing I did.
The girl that played lingus got all my respect, for me it's rare to see a woman playing crazy grooves like that and i can say she killed it 🙇♂️
It's really impressive that Larnell can recall the specific parts he plays when the pieces are so dense and full of little nuances.
Such a weird, amazing level of reciprocal fanship in this. This is truly awesome...Elnoe I think if they ever need a fill in, totally in the band.
He seems like such a genuine human being and it's obvious that he absolutely loves music. A pleasure to watch

What a cool, humble guy. The fact that he's willing to sit down and offer this advice and praise to these up and comers speaks volumes to his character and would be the most amazing feeling for them. 10/10
This man is the kind of person who exemplifies what it means to be a good teacher (and listener). It was as much fun watching him and his reactions as it was to see and hear the videos of all these other incredible drummers adding their own spin.
a guy of Larnell's calibre being so stoked about those covers is just too great, what an amazing dude

What a sweetheart of a man, Larnell you are a sincerely amazing person, I would nominate you as the best drummer of my generation.
Elnoe drumming away like there is no tomorrow, Larnell, “incomprehensible encouraging noises”.
I've been drumming for 30 years and have some locked up grooves and pretty decent fills / chops, but I can't fathom what these guys are doing and how they learned how to do it - great job guys! You are an inspiration.
Hell no, Elnoe, how can this be? Your ebb and flow are old soul, no doubt. There's a joy percolating just underneath that entire performance. Thanks for all this sharing and caring, Larnell.

It's like anything you spend thousands of hours on: you stop seeing individual units and start seeing patterns, chunks, categories. :) Which isn't to say Larnell isn't light-years ahead of me or you or most of us mortals, but I find that sometimes people tend to mystify musical ability as if it's something absorbed from the ether, when really it's just hours, weeks, years of dedicated practice. Anyone can do what Larnell does-provided they're prepared to spend the next decade or two spending 6-10 hours _daily_ on making and studying music. :) Obviously natural ability/talent factors in, but the time you invest has a way bigger impact long term. So again, not trying to act like Larnell isn't one of the heaviest cats around, but he is still "just" a human... who spent way more time learning music than 99.9% of other humans. That is the primary, maybe the only, reason he can do things they can't. :)
Larnell Lewis seems like a top quality human being. Great drummer, too.
The most likeable guy with some of the sickest chops. This was fun

they clearly don't need it tho
I honestly love how he reacts to each person's style. So wholesome and honest! Loving the Larnell content
That second kid is killin it. Watch out for him for sure✊🏻
Was just talking to my music teacher earlier today about how incredible this dude is... astounding
All so good, but I love Elnoe's snare. That hard wood rim, and you can see the grey coming through the head. He's played it alot!
Larnell is such a cool drummer! Let's also take a moment to appreciate well timed ads on drumeo videos, never interrupting the music. Nice video!
Only drummers can understand the difficulties of that and i'm not, only a bassist, but i appreciate their talent ! They are GREAT drummers.
Such a positive vibe from Larnell. Love how he's diggin' all the videos, dropping a few knowledge bombs throughout, never derogatory. I didn't intend to watch 34 minutes of it, but never the less, I watched the whole thing.
Larnell is just absolutely one of the coolest drummers out there. Seeing him genuinely enjoy others' interpretations of the songs is really cool to see, and the fact that he doesn't get a big head and offers actual constructive criticism instead of just saying "you should have done this instead" is very refreshing to see
Larnell rocks all over the place... and keep an eye for Elnoe Budiman... holy moly, that kid is awesome!
I only heard Larnell Lewis for the first time today, he the man, and that brought me here.
Aren’t you one of the coolest musicians out there. Imagine those drummers watching one of their idols digging their play style. Just WOW!
In Larnell's case, I believe; his humility/kindness as a human, propels his play. And the second young cat; I'm inspired! 😊🥁✌🏾
I love watching people that love music and playing it.
This new generation of musicians are going to change music forever
