Just beautiful Gert, what a blessing! And to hear your testimony as a believer in your Q&A video was an inspriration.... I'm a big fan of the Dutch Reformed traditions, wish I could be there for the "singing services" ... there is nothing like a congregation lifting voice in song to the pipe organ..... so sadly lacking in American churches these days.....Any others out there agree???

Gert, thanks again and again for sharing. I found your Xerxes improvisation lovely and seductive in a way. At first it is so subtle that the sleepy listener, or someone unfamiliar with this so familiar tune doesn't notice the changes and additions. It just draws one into thinking, oh, that's nice. But then it wakes the listener up with obvious differences that say, this is Gert von Handel! I found your stop choices for the melody so sweet and delicate. The builder of these pipes is a master in crafting beauty out of metal and wood. The tremolo is not too heavy or overbearing. The second two selections let us hear the contrast in powerful speech of the resources. I appreciate your vision and skill. It would be nice to hear it in person, but for now it is heard from home in Cleveland, Ohio.

This 'recital' really looks more like a church service, judging by the orders of service on the backs of the pews, with Gert playing the first two pieces as an interlude, and the third being a hymn. In the Netherlands, Germany & France, organists play a much longer and freer intro than in English churches - almost like a mini toccata - and generally finish with a flourish as Gert has done here. Bravo!

@@jeroeno1 Being honest does not make me a troll. If this young man wants to get better as a performer, he needs to be open to criticism. The music field is much more than being popular on KZread. This piece was written by George Handel. It is a war horse of classical music. What this young man did in performing this piece was to change the chords as Handel wrote them to those chords often heard in ordinary church services. It bothers me that he would do this. I would think, with the potential he has, that he would want to approach a career from the perspective of being a serious musical artist rather than just a popular KZread content provider. Is he studying music theory as well as performing? Because if he isn't versed in musical theory and how the mechanics of music apply to understanding performance, he will never rise above being just a popular content provider on KZread. But, maybe he doesn't want to be anything other than that.

@@southernbiscuits1275 So there is a perfect 'correct' way to play every piece by every composer such as Handel or Bach? You do realise that Handel himself hardly ever played the same composition the same way twice? Bach as well. With Baroque music if you personally don't like a particular interpretation by a particular musician then thats fine but to say that your ideas constitute the 'definitive' way is stretching it. By your lights everything should be played only on period instruments.

  • @southernbiscuits1275

@@epincion You have completely misconstrued what I said. The harmonies used by this performer sounded like what you would hear at a funeral. They bore no resemblance to the style of this piece. This young man will never realize his potential if his way of improvising is not based upon the structure of the original piece. And, if one wants to say that improvisation is from the performer (as it is) one places a responsibility upon the performer to know what he is doing, not to repeat what others have done, especially when what is being referenced is as commonly popular as what I heard in the Largo. I am just as entitled to my criticism as you are to disagree. It's called a difference of opinion. I might also advise this performer to be cautious of missed notes in his performances.

Spectacular! I concur on Gert's talent, expertise, and creativity! Is there anything he can't play? The organ has excellent ranks and tonal resources. But... I find this organ's tremulants distracting listening to "Xerxes". The tremolo is a mechanical device that adjusts the amount of air delivered to certain ranks of pipes, causing the pipes to go slightly in and out of tune. The adjustment is manually made by a caretaker of the organ, and is a subjective adjustment. The tremulant on this organ for the Handel is, in my estimation, too heavy and slow to my ears. It seems to make the sound heavy and predominately wobbly. It certainly isn't Gert's playing!! And Blessings to the male members of the audience for their firm and steady singing; more than one usually hears!
