    I have seen and heard this wonderful instrument while in Taiwan and it is the greatest organ I have heard. Yes the concert hall and organ were designed to compliment each other with first class acoustics and the organ being an integral part of the auditorium. The resident organist is a fine musician and I was disappointed that he didn’t give more recitals while I was there. We also need more concerts and recitals to be posted online so many more can enjoy this great facility

    Yes indeed the problem is most organs are put into existing buildings and you get what you get. Here the auditorium and organ were co designed. You are right about the cost it was very controversial with many rightly questioning the tremendous cost but then the Taiwanese often don’t do things by halves. I was astounded to see how popular the pipe organ was in Taiwan. The traditional religions obviously don’t use it and very few Christian churches will only have a piano and or spinet organ. it is quite a novelty still and a great place for concert organists to visit and perform.

    @@stuartmclaren2402 I'm curious why you say the pipe organ is 'popular' in Taiwan when classical music isn't widely known and there are only a handful or so organs in the whole island. There can't be that many people who are familiar with pipe organs, but I can imagine that the locals in Kaohsiung are very interested in the new concert hall and organ and come along. Kaohsiung is an industrial city with farming in the surrounding land. I had lived in Taiwan on and off mainly in Taipei but never came across any organ recitals, that was before this hall was completed. The huge site used to be a military barrack, the south of the island suffers from longstanding economic deprivation so building a huge concert hall was seen as a white elephant. The new opera house in Taichung has been left idle a lot of the time. There's another new organ in Pingdong in the adjacent county in another new but small hall.

    @@cmtwei9605 I asked that very same question when both organ recitals I attended were packed and the auditorium is huge. I was lucky to get a seat especially for the second one. At our Cathedral in the Capital city the numbers attending organ recitals wouldn’t fill more than a few seats. The first organ concert I attended by an organist from the Netherlands was in some ways, disappointing. On the program he was supposed to play Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in e minor (Wedge) . The prelude didn’t go well so he omitted the fugue. People I spoke to at the concert suggested that there is a novelty with the organ as in the whole country there are only about 12 pipe organs of any worth. Taiwan produces some excellent classical musicians, and forgive me if I am wrong, but I feel the listening public look to overseas artists thinking that if a musician is from Europe etc then they must be better than their own. Not necessarily so. I was privileged to be invited to hear a local Taiwanese pianist, Alice P Huang, and her playing was as good as or better than any I have heard. So much so I contacted a director who I know of a classical music label recommending her as this label actively seek and record artists from that part of the world. There was an organ recital advertised in Pingdong which I really wanted to attend but couldn’t.

    Speaking of strings, the Wanamaker organ at Macy's in Center City Philadelphia (opened in 1911 as Wanamaker's) has a string division of 6,340 pipes in 88 ranks, with 87 stops, with 36 violin stops in the 8-foot pitch. There is first through sixth concert violin, flat, sharp, and natural for each, and first through sixth muted violin, flat, sharp, and natural for each. It was designed by French composer and organist Marcel Dupre and built by Kimball. When Dupre asked store owner Rodman Wanamaker about his budget, Wanamaker replied, "No limit, Dupre!"

  • @jimshaw899

    @jimshaw899

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@TheHappyCooker68 Yes, I have heard the Wanamaker several times, even stood near the console for two afternoon concerts. (One concert was played by a young man, a student at Curtis, who jogged to the console, said "hello," threw his backpack on the bench, retrieved some sheet music, kicked off his running shoes, and launched into the music as if at dutiful practice. He was very good at it.) The Wanamaker is a singular assemblage of organs, especially because of its acoustic. It sends great gobs of sound rolling over the store. But the Wanamaker suffers greatly from that acoustic. Its hundreds of ranks are voiced softly, so one can barely hear a solo horn or a string, but rather a horn or string *section* It's like an orchestra of a thousand players: grand but perhaps unwieldy for a recital. That takes nothing from the Wanamaker, an organ for an entirely different purpose that serves that purpose very well. It especially suits French organ works, I think. This is a *concert* instrument, and it sounds like a very good one, indeed. The sound is up front and bold, both solo and in ensemble. And the acoustic is a nice surprise for a multipurpose hall. I haven't heard it except here, but I think it would be the *wrong* instrument for the Wanamaker store, too. I'd like to hear both, but on separate days, I think. And playing different scores.

    It is the largest pipe organ in Asia, but the arts center was not without controversy during planning and construction 20 years ago. Kaohsiung is an industrial city with farming in the surrounding land and 2.8m people and suffers from longstanding economic deprivation. The new opera house in Taichung is idle a lot of the time. In terms of size of the organ, it beats the 30 year old 8000 pipe Rieger in Hong Kong with 7.5m people. I don't see the point of having 5 manuals, what does the Chorus manual with a series of mutation stops do that the others can't? Do you need so many trumpets and tubas? And the mutation stops on the Pedal? You have to lean forward to play on the top Solo manual.
