When a city changes its affiliation (say London goes from being the largest city in England to the largest in the UK), you might keep its rectangle unchanged but simply change the affiliation label rather than have it disappear under old affiliation and reappear under the new one. The first city which is shown here to reach 1 million population is Beijing in 1775, however, this was not the first city in history to reach 1 million. Rome reached 1 million population in 133 BC but after the Roman Empire fell the population drastically fell.

Naples between 1713 and 1804 is mislabelled. The city wasn't part of the Spanish Empire in that time period. Vienna is also mislabelled between 1791 and 1803, since the "Austrian Empire" didn't exist yet. "Habsburg Monarchy" could have been a more accurate label, but the most accurate label would have been either "(Archduchy of) Austria" or "Holy Roman Empire".

@martonkoves6292 During the War of the Polish Succesion, the Duke of Montemar, conquered Sicily and Naples by the Spanish Bourbons in the Battle of Bitonto , crowning to the future King of Spain, Charles III of Spain, as a King of Naples and Sicily, confirmed by the Treaty of Vienna in 1738.

@@BarrocoBreda1635 Yet he abdicated his throne in Naples to ascend to the throne of Spain. The two countries had the same dynasty, and Naples perhaps was also Spanish-aligned, but that still doesn't mean it was part of the Spanish Empire in this particular time period.

@@fehervari98 There is no conclussion between historians if was or not part of the Spanish Empire, some them consider it because the spanish army conquered Naples and sicily, others not because there was certain autonomy in the kingdom, in my opinion was a puppet state of the Spanish Empire because this was aligned by the bourbons. @@BarrocoBreda1635 It is not a debate. There was no personal union between Naples and Spain after 1713, and Naples wasn't a vassal state of Spain either. Wether Naples was a puppet state of Spain or just closely aligned to it doesn't matter in this context.

Vinenam used to be part of China for over 2000 years , just after China and france war in 1883 to 1885 ,after 1885 Vienam ，Vietnam leave the territory of China and gained independence from China ,After 1885, Vienam no longer part of China . The ancestors of Vietnamese people were all Chinese, and the existing ethnic minorities in Vietnam are mostly Chinese. The current Vietnamese people are also mostly descendants of Chinese people , Vienam is a small and there is no chance has a wotld top 10 big cities in history

I'd understand why China and India would have the largest metro areas. 1 billion plus... But the detail is in the quality of life in those mega areas. I vote for Sao Paulo, New York, Mexico DF and Buenos Aires.

The quality of life in both cities is improving. It's different from the west doesn't mean it's not better. It's certainly better than a lot of cities in West like New York where you can easily get mugged in the subway or might get shot by any random stranger.

New York has 8.8m inhabitants (2020, wikipedia), not 18,937m in 2023 as indicated in this video Moscow has 13.1m inhabitants (2023, wikipedia) Now, if you talk about the New York Metropolitan Area, its population is 20m while Moscow region (incl. Moscow) has 21.7m inhabitants. So as always, the anglo-saxons medias are biased and lying. :))) Who is surprised ?
