Large Print Examples GH4 and GH5 || Micro Four Thirds

Couple of weeks ago I posted an image on instagram of two large prints I did for a client. Many of you replied that you wanted a closer look at these prints, so here it is. A closer look!

I think people seem to forget that it wasn't that long ago that top end pro full frame cameras were hovering around the 12 megapixel mark, and nobody had any complaints printing ridiculously huge prints from them. I can certainly say that my M43 gear captures a lot more detail than my first full frame setup did!

Wow, now that's a large print. Just goes to show you don't need the huge megapixel cameras to produce a large print. Yeah sure if get up close you will see the slight imperfections, but of course, a print that large is not designed to be viewed up close, it's designed to be viewed from a distance so you won't notice the imperfections. Great job!!!

@@thethirdman225 It's a shame there's no Hi-res mode in the GH5, I came here because a client wants A0-sized prints, and got a bit worried about whether my GH5 can do that without looking terrible. Seems like it can, as A0 is smaller than the gallery print from the video.

Wow, thanks so much for this. I'm looking to print some large (Well I thought large till I saw these!!) prints for my walls. I have been researching if my m43 gear is up to the job. I have a couple of bodies, mainly a GX80 and 12-35/35-100 f2.8 lenses), and think this has proved I need to stop researching and get out and take some photos. More than anything, your compositions and photos were stunning, so that's what I need to start concentrating on improving, rather than my gear. I'll probably still ease my gear itch by selling off some of my unused stuff to put to a G9, probably with my GM5 as a mini me 2nd body, but you have truly inspired me to get out and shoot. Thanks!

Thanks for taking this to the extreme. Also, I loved the time lapse segment. I recently did a test where I took a 36mp image from my D800 and reduced it down to 12mp, and even when pixel peeping, there wasn't a lot of detail lost, just a bit more ragged edges. I then took the 12mp image and uprezzed it to 36mp, and the final image very nearly matched the original, even when pixel peeping. I'm convinced that a 20mp image can be uprezzed to 80mp to get even larger prints if desired.

Thanks for sharing this Oddbjørn. I liked how the larger print really opened up the size of that meeting room. For me, this highlights the value in considering where to hang a print as well as what it will do to the room / wall when it is up. My next purchase is a monitor calibration tool / device so I'm not surprised when I print my images. On a side note, I must admit I was somewhat disappointed when I initially saw this video was 'only' 6 and a half minutes long - is this selfish of me to want more, knowing how much work goes into your videos? The prints are beautiful. It's about the image, and the viewer's connection to the image. Even if I walked up close to the print to get a closer look, I still would not see anything because I'm already drawn in. I do not buy into all the high-tech megapixel, and razor sharpness fodder that's out there, because for me----photography is all about the image and what the image conveys to the viewer and the connection that's made.

I shoot almost exclusively on a GH5 and often do stuff for banners (trade show booths, etc...), depending on the application I decide whether adding noise intentionally (for style), or using an excellent AI powered upscaling software is best. Often you can upscale with the built in upscaling software in photoshop as much as 4x resolution and still be hard pressed to ever tell that it was upscaled!

The key here is viewing distance. I’ve printed 24 mp FF images, taken on tripod, manual hyperfocal focussing and f8-11 with pro quality lenses up to 120cm and that look good at a viewing distance when one takes in the whole picture. But inevitably with landscapes people move in closer to see the detail. And once you get close enough the images start to look a bit fuzzy. If you are not worried about people moving in to take a closer look then by all means print as large as you like. Personally I want my images to hold up on close inspection. I also use M4/3 so I am not a FF snob. On the other hand I have seen 300 cm prints taken on a large format Linhoff film camera that probably look better up close than my 120cm FF images.

Of course it's gonna be good given the technology now a days. I mean for landscape(where everything can be setUp), the iso performance of a sensor is not challenged. That's why m4/3 is enough, damn even a 1 inch sensor is enough when put through a tripod if it has enough resolution and can shoot raw. Great work tho.

Viewing distance does matter and DPI is largely irrelevant for billboards since the viewing distance is so great. However, with fine art printing, and gallery printing, DPI is very important because the viewers are often walking up on the image and viewing it from very close quarters. These prints all look great, the substrate does a great job of handing the enlargement. But, I would have loved to have seen the larger print interpolated or properly upscaled using an algorithm to add in some extra pixels. This imaging tech has improved greatly and he could have printed that larger print at 150dpi rather that 55. Granted the pixels are “added” in via the algorithm but it really helps upon close inspection. Still the print process and material did a great job of nullifying some of the digital artifacts and jaggies....but some proper up sampling would help here, if done correctly.

Nice images and prints. However, I wouldn't use a small sensor, low megapixel camera if I was going to print that large. Imagine the quality of the print if taken using a Sony A7r IV (61mp) or another 50mp camera.

I have been printing some shots from my lumix G9 with its leica 105mm lens and biggest I've printed is a A2 size. At this size A2 the prints are at their sharpest point any bigger and they start to show the edits. Mind you the 2 prints in this video are huge compared to the A2 that I print and if this photographer is able to sell prints that bug from a micro four thirds sensor then it's very clear that it's worth getting a micro 4 thirds and saving yourself money rather than jumping on the full frame cameras and having to spend nearly 1000-2000£ each lens you might need.

What is the color ghosting on the edge of rocks up close? obviously pixels can be seen in the largest photo BUT why the hell would anyone get that close and lose the point of the image. Difference? of course. Depends on subject matter and material you print on. Say if you had a group of faces this would be no good. Rocks, buildings, streets, landscapes no problem. Question couldn't you re-sample and increase the DPI to 300 when resizing? I am ignorant with large printing and I use MFT with 16MP mostly at night and crop heavily sometimes (recipe for printing disaster). I am shooting street photography so whats in the frame, story etc is most important the dirtier the better. missed focus? yah all the time. Then again I see portraits on huge signs in the train in Tokyo and obviously DPI is low but from far away are impressive. But why print at a lower DPI?

Very nice video. Now let's do some numbers. The largest print. 225cm x 150cm. That is 88.6" x 59.1". At 51DPI, we get 4518pixels x 3012pixels. Now consider the type of photos. There are no details that humans could decide to be sharp or not. That is not to talk them down, they are very nice shots. At the level of the printer, the question is what the resolution of the print head is. My printer easily does 2,880 DPI and even when I offer a 51DPI image, the printer is going to use all those nozzles. This means the 51DPI file is up-sampled to the resolution of the printer when it is printed. If the printer were to use the 2,880 to mimic 51DPI, we would easily see the pixels when close by. I remember printing my lecture handouts at 300DPI and the "shock" about the contour sharpness improvement when I moved to 600DPI. And then the on-display readability improvement when anti-aliasing (True Type fonts) got introduced on the computer desktop. Or when I moved from a 1K to a 4K display. So, somewhere in the post-processing-to-print chain there is up-sampling going on. The algorithms used to do that are specific to your post-processing application (and potentially already the invention of pixels in the camera's raw engine - the things in the sensor are analog photovoltaic cells with a monochrome filter over them in red, green or blue and generally arranged in a R-G-G-B grid according to mr. Bayer). Then they are specific to your driver-printer combination. And settings of parameters across the board, like droplet size or print head to paper distance maybe. There may be choices in the software you use - Photoshop has two alternative algorithms that do up-sampling, v1 and v2. Up-sampling means that dots are invented. They are extrapolated via interpolation. This is how the analog sensor-cell readout is given its complementary color values and how anti-aliasing is done. Interpolation of the thing under examination with its surroundings. If you do a bad job, the result looks fuzzy or all of a sudden has a Moiré pattern. Now go to Sean Bagshaw's KZread channel and watch his video "Which Software For The Best Looking BIG Prints?" His conclusion is that Topaz Gigapixel does a better job. And in a landscape panorama that I tested (with many fine details in leaves of plants and trees and a couple hikers in the far distance), I arrived at the same conclusion. My pano shot natively was almost 15,000 pixels wide already, and up-sampled to 32,000. The level of detail I got was incredible. But, it took hours for my high-end notebook with discrete graphics GPU and memory to deliver the result. Start when you go to bed and see the result next morning. Here I started using a JPEG as input and the result was JPEG. I believe Sean started with 16 bit TIFF files that are a direct representation of the original raw file. In my comment in Sean's post, I have some meandering thoughts and mention issue and limitation. Oh, with the up-sampling to 32,000 pixels, I provided input to my printer at 1,440DPI for a print at A2 (about 60cm or 23.6"). So whatever the driver and printer need to invent to get to the 2,880 of the nozzles, it is not much and not visible to the naked eye, no matter how close you look. In professional printing, the nozzles are replaced by an optical system that exposes a photographic layer which is then developed - and this needs up-sampling as well. In painting, painters practice for years to master unsharpness for what is farther away. Creating images that are sharp front-to-back may fool us when we look at them to give perspective compression. But when people see photographically, that problem disappears (if you study the cognitive development of human vision, you'll notice that we weren't born with the photographic vision ability and generally do not develop that until really necessary - e.g. when eye sight in one eye is lost.)

@@oddbjrnaustevikfoto- whilst the reasoning is above, a couple staccato summary points. (1) the photo needs details that are meaningful to human vision. (2) printers always print at their native resolution. (3) when you offer a file to a print system for significantly enlarged printing, it will either do some pixel-binning-like approach (e.g. likely happening when you set your 1,200 DPI laser to 300 dpi - no change to nozzles, just a group us treated logically as one) or the print chain will invent detail that is not explicit in your photo file. (4) the invention of detail in digital tech (audio, video) is called upsampling and it make a big difference to the perceived end result how this is done. (5) you can leave the upsampling to the print shop or that part of the chain, at home, or do it in an application - I compared LR, PS v1, PS v2, IrfanView 64, and Topaz Gigapixel. The latter raises my total cost but us by far the best.
