As a child, I was always responsible to keep my room clean, the bathroom, and feed the pets. As I got older I made one meal a week. You’re teaching your children life skills that they will need when they leave the nest. I understand the gardening thing. That would be my sister and I. She did the teeny tiny, tedious stuff. I was more about digging up and planting the trees, bushes,or larger plants. Not symmetrical more the casual cottage style. Even filling Easter eggs I would get three times as many done as her.😂

I find its much more motivating for kids to let them know they are contributing to the household/family instead of just barking orders. I love how you also do work alongside with them. It shows them every member has a role to make the family work.

We got a Border Collie and she was bred for herding, but she was more bred for complacency. She was amazing and would help.the lady behind us herd her goats more than the dog she had! We had her for 13.5 years and we miss her still.

Loved the midweek video. All that beautiful land and critters, and beautiful souls enjoying it so much. So cute the little guy running in little bare feet, wearing himself out on all the activity and oxygen filled air!. More than ready for a nice outdoor "nap" on big Sister's lap no less. So enjoyable to watch today. 😊

I like that you acknowledged why you have this breed of dog instead of rehoming. That kind of honesty is so refreshing on KZread and it's a reason why I like your content so much, your life seems so beautiful but it doesn't seem easy and you don't shy away from that.

We're also a large family that's homesteading (but we only have 7 children) and I really appreciate you sharing this video! Of course, we also divide up chores, but I love seeing how other families do it too. I really think our children have learned so much by having to be "hands on" with garden and animal chores and I feel like it unifies the family when we have a common goal to achieve together. Really do love your channel, Jessica! 💕

Chores are important for all ages - teaches so many lessons! While I grew up in a family of 10, we were blessed with one child 14 years into our marriage. He is now 22 years old, and even home from college, he has chores! We only heat with wood as well - and he is incredibly helpful in bringing up downed tree wood, my husband (Dad!) has cut up in the woods (200 acres) up to the yard area. My husband typically sets up the garden and then I take over. When it comes to large harvest times, if he is available, he'll help but it usually is my job. Sharing does help the processes move along for sure!

My family ALWAYS had a wood stove for heating and no backups. I totally know what work it takes to get enough wood each year for that heat. A lot of people really have no idea how much work it takes. Kudos to your family for doing that along with everything else!!

I loved this! I have one acre and I grow fruits, veggies and bees. I want some chickens but I’m sort of on the fence about it. I am 65 and run this place alone, but I do want a giant dog, lol. I think you are so right about it being a beautiful life. It keeps me active and healthy. There is always something to be done. You guys are perfectly balanced. Those children are learning life skills most people dream of. How many acres do you have?

I think it's also worth mentioning how much more time the kids have because of homeschooling. If I remember correctly, you said something about 3-4 hours of school day. Taking that + all the chores, they still have way more time to enjoy their childhood than the typical school + extra lessons kid. I hated wasting all day in school and then all evening on homework. I would choose animal care over boring unproductive education any day.
