Beautiful fish. At what age did you notice the iridescent scales go over the body?

Awesome fish. They seem so intelligent and aware. Couple questions: Do they get bored in a planted tank? If so, would it be good to rescape it once in a while? Do you raise live food & is it very time consuming?

-Unimaculatas are one of the least shy wild bettas out there, they do great in well lited planted tanks. -Yes they can breed as a pair and generally they do not eat their young, but you should separate the female or the male once he starts to hold (they are mouthbrooder) -They are easy to feed and readily take dry or homemade food, in fact, they are one of the least picky eaters of all the wild bettas -Watch my video on raising Daphnia, live food can be time-consuming but if you plan ahead its worth it. Hope this answers your question.

@@BlackwaterAquatics Great! I’m busy looking at a couple of wild bettas on an import list, and have to choose between a couple pairs. Came across this comment, and now i’m getting them most definitely:) Is it okay to keep these as a pair constantly? I breed Cichlids and Corys, so I’ll have the stuff to take either parent out when they do spawn.. but I’m mainly getting them for a blackwater aquarium away from the busy breeding room, in my bedroom :)

Just had a question about bottom dwellers that could clean up for them. Would kuhlis be fine, I might have to use pangio Myersi which gets 3-4. If kuhlis are not fine, would whiptail cats be fine as cleanup. I think these are messy fish right?

Great question, unimacs are very greedy eater. Id think you'll have issue getting the food to the kuhlis. Any warm soft water fish that is at least 2.5" can do well with unimaculata because they wont see it as food.

Is an Unimaculata Kayan a type of betta, I looked on your website and I didn't see it there, I was just wondering because I am looking for a pair of wild betta to breed and I am researching all different types of wild type mouthbrooders. the website I buy my imported betta from has one pair labelled as Kayan, but I am not sure if that is its actual sub breed or if its just from the river

How do you breed these guys?

These are mouth brooders. They are hard and easy to breed at the same time. The hard part is finding a compatible pair, and the easy part is they will breed constantly if the compatibility is good.
