Laptop to Desktop Conversion ~ Adding a CPU Cooler

So moving along with making an old lappy into a desktop PC, it was time to upgrade the CPU cooler.
As laptops manufacturers use any mounting they see fit, a bit of custom work is needed.

I have been considering doing a project similar to this, where I transplant a laptop into a cheap PC Case (with mods), great video!

people said 10 yrs ago 3d printing is a gimmick a fad and will be useless ,but te past few years they become very very useful for project videos on youtube etc, way easier to use and cheaper than CNC machinary and waste material

That’s because 10 years ago it was those things. The printers were trash compared to the ones you can pick up today and for a fraction of the price.

you should do more cpu cooler to laptop conversion videos. you are the only one in the whole internet that did it. and many many of us have laptops that we want to overclock and change processor for faster and hotter ones. and we need to put bigger coolers. we don´t care about portability. i have my laptop with lots of cables in my dektop anyways. ethernet, energy, hdmi, joysticks, keyboard, mouse, external drives, and two base coolers now.

If you have an old laptop sitting around you want to still use for some light gaming. You can actually get a decent little performance bump by modding it like this. Give a nice powerful overclock, and it actually being able to stay at that boosted level.

How is the performance under load? Is it enough for passive cooling? I am trying to do something similar for my 45W TDP laptop cpu. Thanks for the video btw.

The CPU cooler is far greater in mass than even the largest laptop CPU cooler. As long as there is a good contact, there should not be any problem.

If you look for "dc to dc step down module" you should be able to find what you need. As for the machine it is still as it is in the video. There is a problem with it soft locking up now and then. Only way to clear it is press the CPU speed buttons. Just have not had the time to look into fixing it.

Any CPU that is well cooled will work better and overall faster. Depending on how much RAM you already have, you may not even be using all of it.

@@endlesserenity if it's DDR2 then that is really cheap at the moment and well worth upgrading. Just beware of the RAM limit if you are using a 32 bit Windows.

Input voltage: 3V to 40V Output voltage: 1.25V to 35V Input current: 2.5A (maximum) But the ebay ones are marked lower at 10V to 24V input and 3V to 20V output at 1A It is possible to go from the maximum to the minimum but best practice is keep the step down close.
