Basically, you did a solder reflow with the hot air around the graphics chip. I did a similar repair, a solder reflow procedure by putting the board in an oven. You are correct that the problem will return. The laptop that I did this on worked for about 3 months before the problem returned. Thank you so much for the videos you make. They are very informative and useful.

@@kylequerijero1002 Poor cooling is the root problem. Solder reflow or as is also known as reballing recreates the conductive pathes needed for the graphics chip. The graphics chip may be available. You would have to Google the numbers and search for it. There are good chances that you can find a replacement. You may have to settle for a previously used chip. Finding a replacement main board is an option that is more probable and a more reliable option. Replacement boards are not too costly. A solder reflow is a temporary fix that may last from a few days to a year in duration. You can do a solder reflow in an oven. Search KZread for videos which show you how to do this.

High heat causes cold solders, even in BGAs. Very great video, instruction, & repair!

These are what some shops call a fix and mislead the customers, your right, this fix is a bit hit and miss which can last a short while or 6 months if you very lucky. People who repair Xbox use these types of fix's and they don't last long, maybe long enough to sell them on Ebay, which is wrong.

The ridiculous thing about that graphics chip is that Nvidia in 2012 sent us NEW replacement video chips that had the same defect. Which means it was just a matter of time before they would do it again. ASUS ROG Gaming Laptops suffered from this as well. Best I was able to do was come up with creative ways to cool the chip so that it would last longer..lol. It worked well. Nice video. Thank you.

I have used this fix many times on hp laptops and the famous xbox rrod. a lot of hp dv6000 and dv9000 have this issue. Simple reflow will get it working again. But like you said it may last 1 hour or it may last years. I have also used a copper shims/copper penny under the heatsink for gpu to try to prevent it from happening again with great success. Of course the Proper fix would be to replace the gpu chip which is not so easy.

The biggest problems in Laptop coolings ( In PCs also of course and other electronic cooled by fans ) is the no intake air filtering, sometimes you might found some foam around radiator, but it's only for outtake of air not intake, so dust is sticking on radiator and keeps the flown stucked. my best idea since now is to use some canvas filter where the air comes in, sometimes make bigger holes for air intake, and of course the easiest thing - cooling pad for laptops , but put the fans to take out the hot air not intake the cold air inside beacuse just like i said and you could see on this video, when the outtake airflow is stuck putting another fans will not fix your problem. Of course you can just simply clean the fans, replace thermal paste by checking everything in about 2 years of usage or even one depends on how much is the air clean in the room where you using your device.

I like that you are honest. I like your videos. You have 100% right. This is a temporary fix. The issue is inside that chipset/graphics chip. Because of overheating and huge power consumption traces are damaged or micro solder balls under that small silver core have cracks where we don't have any access. Puting heat on the chip can fix that traces or micro balls temporary so to fix it for good we have to replace this chip for new one. Sometimes (very rare) the chip and micro solder balls under small silver core are fine but because of huge and fast temperature differences (cold during idle, very hot during stress) a tension is created on the board. Under the chip, under whole green area there is a bigger solder balls - usually 500-700 pieces 0,5mm each and because of that tension, they can be damaged - or have corrosion. Puting heat on the chip, even for few second can also fix that cracks temporary, but in this case you can achieve very long fix in different way by making good reflow by taking out that red glue and heat the chip to 238 celsius to melt that balls. All cracks will be fixed and flux will clean corrosion. This could gives you a year or two of working laptop. Some of technican are doing reballing, they replacing old solder balls to new ones with lead. I was doing this as well a lot of times in the past, but now i know that its not worth it. After years of fixing and clients feedbacks I can tell that there is a connection between HOW do you make this repair and time how long this will stay fixed. If you take out the red glue and make professional reflow until all balls will be melted and whole chip can be move by little touch on the corner, then even if the issue was only inside the chip, then because of that huge heat and long time - you will see that laptop will work at least 6 months and more and clients will be happy. But if you leave that glue and want to fix it in few seconds (as you did on video), then you have probability that very soon it will die again and angry clients will comback very quick

well, i did a lot of reballing before, so i can say is no differences comparing with the video. The problem is inside of the chip. We can buy the laptop from video for about £20, so is no way around spend time on that for anything else, thats why i have two choices, i can say 'no' and i can just charge the customer for saving his hdd backup or i charge for a fix like in video and give him the chance to save his backup by himself and also use the laptop how long it will work. I prefer the second one, it will make the customer more happy having the laptop back as working, even temporary

I understand. that is why I've said I like that you are honest to clients. Second idea to fix it very quick and charge only for giving to client possibility to save / backup data at home is great. I didn't thought in this way - thanks. And about differences -please allow me to have own opinion - I've made 30-40 that kind of repairs (laptop / PC graphics card, etc) doing reflow or reballing and always I ask clients to call me someday in the future and tell when it dies again. there is difference. use the logic thinking - solder must be melt to fix crack (doesn't matter if crack is on the traces inside the chip or on the balls under the chip) if you stop heat before melting point (238) you will fix crack but in the very weak way.

@@electronicsrepairschool Well said...this is what we ar doing just charge a little money for the laptop to work to save all his memories fr hdd in his own way & we also get some service charges extra. Even changing the on board processor gives problem so just replace that board the happy customer will be yours.

I had the same problem with my 9 years old Sony Vaio with an AMD GPU. At some point it starts to produce artifacts like vertical red lines etc and then shutdowns, so impossible to work. What I done is reflowing (31:20) and it seems to work. The problem seems to be only with old motherboards that use no-lead solder. So the heat literally desolder the GPU and at some point it physically lose the connection with the motherboard. The symptoms can vary a lot when it happens. From what I gather, the reballing of the GPU using newer methods of soldering might be the permanent solution if you want to keep the GPU at high temperatures otherwise it may desolder again as Sorin said.

Its really important to have the fan clean in your laptop. If not, your graphics chip is toast.

I also think it's a fix. He removed the heat source by removing (brushing off the vent clog from the heat sink fan housing, brushing off fan blade dust deposits), lubricated the fan bearing with special grease, redid the heat sink contacts (scrapped old thermal paste, then wiped the contact surface with cotton swab and petrol/alcohol, applied new thermal paste and put new thermal pad for good heat transfer), put the screws back and the fan power contact back firmly. Now the fan turns pretty fast. Thus, it is a fix for this problem in my opinion.

had the same problem on hp probook 4540s, (i5) in the end i found if i change ram slot laptop will power up. only once. the you need to change slot again. got tip on discord it might be the bios problem. bios update wasn't posible so i got new bios chip and laptop is "working fine, yes" :) ty for your videos.

Hi Sorin, I have an Intel Nuc with a similar behaviour (turns on 5 seconds, fan spinning, then off five seconds, in loop). Intel codes listing reports that this is a “power on circuit failure”. Could this be an alternative answer? The fact is that the graphics are in the cpu, the other chip is the chipset. Maybe a short? I am getting mad, the board is tiny and it’s hard to check the power supplies. Thanks in advance, I am learning a lot from your videos. You’re very kind and competent, keep it on!

liquid metal comes really handy for reflowed GPU chips. However, i am never fixing laptops with no integrated GPU on board. If you see that the laptop has Intel HD, it is very likely that you can switch the discrete chip off by moving jumpers on board(you should find it in schematics or simple google the mod)

These were really nice laptops..even tho they only had core 2 duo intel processors you could pare them with a good SSD and they were great. I would always hack the fan circuit(BLK R,Y,WHT- CUT THE Y,WHT) to stay on hi after a GPU reflow or MB replacement. It would extend the life of the repair by keeping the laptop cooler. Hate HP Laptops, many of their Laptops seem to suffer from this problem, the DV Series was notorious for it as was the CQ Series, I have about 4 x CQ57's and a couple of CQ61's that were donated following short-term resolution to the problem, only useful for spares, one DV9700 is still working approximately 3 years after the repair was done, that one is an exception to the rule as the repair is usually very short lived.

I am sure the chips - the CPU and the GPU as they do numerous computations. To keep them cool, heat sink is provided to transfer heat from the chips. Then the fan is provided to suck the hot air surrounding the heat sink to outside of the laptop housing through the vents present on the heat sink housing which was badly clogged as Sorin showed in this video. Therefore, when I hold the laptop, I make sure that I am not blocking the air flow through the vents (both inlet and outlet) of the laptop. Hope I answered your question.

are you gonna do any live streaming where we can ask question to some repairs we have going on since i have some boards where i put 3.3v on the board since its shorted and then the chipset starts to get warm... i havent seen you have this type of case where the chipset gets warm when you put amps to the 3.3v

I had this type of HP laptop, a G62 model with an AMD graphic, it had the same problem after a year and half. The technician who fixed it told me the same think. The problem came back after a month. i decided not to buy HP laptop anymore. Another technician told me that all the HP G series have the same issue he showed me his collection of faulty HP laptops laying in his shop. I was really upset with this laptop considering the money i spended and how careful i was with it. Other common issues : hinge problem, over heating, Battery will die after one year

I remember reballing a old toshiba laptop in the oven to warm it up around 120 deg c, then once warm took it out and went over the gpu with a heat gun LOL..Thing still works to this day, it was obviously not mine hahahaha but they were going to throw it in the bin there face when i wrapped the mother motherboard being put in the oven like a pie was hilarious..There were lots of lines on the screen.. in there on max temp covered..I would not do the above to my own machine without a reflow station not a machine..Just use loads of kapton tape great video :)) Fixed a lot of laptops as you say there mostly crap jobs, reinstall, hard drive, screens, they are mostly what people have asked to be fixed next the charger port, but its funny fixing laptop screen and you fix it reboot it to check the computer nd the last website they were on was porn hub ahahaha , .Now i want too learn more about chip level repairs..Thank you for your ideos mate...And any one thinking of going into computer repairs you will see how much people care for there laptops, always wash your hands after touching them :)) or you will end up with an STD.

The red glue around the cornes of chip is ( as i have guessed since reballing and reflowing some chips by myself ) is high temperature silicon glue, to make chip won't go up while the solder bulbs are getting hot and going up and up, the the PB Solders might get even higher than the PBFree , that's why the companies are using those, and of course the higher temps of melting for PBFree solder, problem is that companies might solder inproperly the chip, and the solder balls might be not good quality also, then the right reballing might fix the chip for lasting long but it isn't 100% sure - just beacuse of it's life is shorten of temperatures that it was working, and other things. The best way is just to replace the chip with good quality solder balls, but when it's not profitable who will want to do it? I'm doing reballing and the reflow using BGA Irda station which has also the heatplate, so the heating comes to the up and bottom of the board, and beacuse lot of people are doing things not 100% right as it should be the chips might work for 6 months or years, it's a lottery,

How interesting. I just got a PC in my shop with a Gigabyte mobo that has this boot loop problem. I haven't looked at it on the bench yet...

the best way to fix it is to desolder, cleanup, reball the chip and fit it with a thermal resistant grease. and yes it is a fix to heatup and solder it with flux and the reason why i dont like BGA-Design: it will loose contact more often as in a socket

If I were you I would connect the laptop to an external monitor with a HDMI cable or any other display cable and see whether you see anything in the external monitor. If you see some display, then you will know that your laptop screen is not communicating with your motherboard and try to resolve that issue.

Is there any specific type of grease? Or any type can do the job?
