Laptop Memory Upgrade (Acer Aspire One 725)

This video shows how to upgrade the memory in a laptop or netbook computer. The specific computer shown in an Acer Aspire One 725, which is upgraded from 4GB to 8GB of RAM. However, the process is the same for any laptop or netbook.

It depends on the size of the SSD -- on my main editing/CG PC I have Windows 7 and all software on a 256GB SSD. The only exceptions are swap and cache files for PhotoShop and Adobe Premiere, which would rapidly destroy the thing. All media files are on separate hard drives. The key thing is not to overfill an SSD -- leave at least 10 per cent unallocated for wear levelling.

Yes, according to Acer the Ascpire One 725 can only go to 4GB (I had a 4GB model). But many people on my other Aspire One 725 upgrade video reported a successful upgrade to 8GB, so I tried it in this video -- and it works no problem. :)

The Toshiba Satellite L300D has two DDR2 667 SO-DIMM slots and can take a maximum of 4B of RAM (a 2GB DDR2 SO-DIMM in each slot). So if you have less than 4GB, you will be able to increase the memory just as I've shown here. I would suggest running the crucial scanner to find suitable RAM. Good Luck! :)

Yes, this will work fine. Aspire One 725 netbooks come with either 2GB or 4GB, depending on the country they are sold in. But elsewise they are identical and can take 8GB. So you could take yours to either 4GB or 8GB. :)

Ah, thanks for this -- a very good point you make. I had forgotten that Microsoft artificially constrained Win 7 starter to only work with 2GB of RAM, and also Windows 7 Home edition to 8GB, even in the 64 bit version. But this could be overcome by "upgrading" windows -- or installing Linux! :)

Yes, this is what Acer claims. But many people told me on my other Aspire One 725 video that it would work with 8GB, so it tried it. And it works fine. I've been using the machine most days since March 2013 when I did the upgrade and have had no problems. But as I say in the video, you ignore manufacturer's specs and memory scanners at your own risk! :)

Good idea for a video -- I will be more active here by mid-April, as I'm spending most of the first three months of 2013 writing a new book on 3D printing. Thanks for the video. I have this exact model with Win 8. I bumped the memory from 2GB to 8GB exactly following these steps. Bought the same memory you used. Crucial's website scanner only recommends up to 4GB when I ran it but the 8GB does report as compatible on the webpage. This message was posted on the upgraded netbook. True, but my worry is not what is on the drive (where all key files are encrypted via TrueCrypt), but the web accounts to which I remained logged-in (I write in Google Docs). By password-protecting Windows it is (pretty much) impossible for somebody to pick up my laptop and access my Google and other accounts. OK, you could get data from the SSD, but Google's two-factor security would hopefully prevent connection via any other device -- unless my smartphone was stolen and hacked too! :)

Older memory gets expensive j because it is not made anymore, so it becomes a (limited) supply and demand thing. Very annoying though that all forms of DDR2 are now much more expensive than DDR3 -- hence forcing bigger upgrades than just memory. :(

The new RAM is a 8 GB HyperX Impact Black 1G x 64-bit (8GB) DDR3L-1600 (PC3L-12800) CL9-9-9 204 pin SO-DIMM memory modul (type HX316LS9IB/8) running at 1,35 Volt.

I'm going to buy a 4gb memory for the pc (which in the other video I said is the most basic version of the acr725 with 2gb) and I ran in the system the specr prirform, he says that the Pc has 2 banks of memory of which one is being used, as I opened the pc as you teach it and if there is capacity for two memories, now, out of curiosity, how do you think you could insert the second memory ?? ? Thank you very much (sorry my English, is the translator google)

depends if the CPU can addres it. some low end cpus are limited to slower modules, like the AMD c-60 which only addreses 1066 ddr3. however as amd apus have a intergrated graphics chip that highly benefit from faster ram its always suggested to use faster ram purely for the buildin gpu.

Very easy upgrade. I always wanted to upgrade my old Sony Viao Laptop from 2009 but it uses SO-DIMM DDR2 800 memory. I check on some sites like Newegg and Amazon and it is very very expensive 150+ dollars. Any clue why that would cost so much? I though older memory is suppose to be cheaper. My only though was that it might be a difficult type of memory to manufacture.

I'm upgrading the RAM on this exact same model netbook (though mine initially came with a mere 2GB of RAM). I saw in the video where you said you knew that 8GB would work, does that hold true for a machine running Windows 8.1 as well? It crawls with 2GB and I thought I'd have to make do with 4GB, which would be a big help, but I'm certain it would be smooth as silk with 8GB. Any info you could give me would be great as after seeing your video on installing an SSD (which I wasn't aware was an option for this system) I plan on doing both projects together.

It depends on your operating systemand your machine. Here I think the Acer Aspire One 725 cannot go about 8GB (although Acer list it as 4GB). On many other PCs you can fit far more memory, though different versions of the same operating system limit how much you can use. For example, the limits for Windows 7 are as follows: Starter: 8GB Home Basic: 8GB Home Premium: 16GB Professional: 192GB Enterprise: 192GB Ultimate: 192GB

You use a DDR3 1333 module, what would happen if it was a 1600 speed module?

Thank you for this awesome video, but i have something on my mind, on minute 1:52 you showed Crucial 8GB DDR3, but on 3:30 you put Micron 8GB DDR3L, so i want to clarify that the ram used for this system is DDR3L (1.35v) not the regular DDR3 (1.5v) right?

@@8carela im ended up using ddr3l (1.35v) because i follow the existing ram specs, but you can the regular ddr3 (1.5v) also for this system

Why you couldn't use the full 4GB if you have a 64-bit O.S.?

i have a question sir. I bought corsair vengeance 8gb to replace my old ram to replace my old ram(my laptop is acer es1-711). After I replaced the old ram in to the new one I then started my laptop but the problem is my screen is all black but my laptop is just working fine. so my question is how do I fix it?
