Laptop Memory Upgrade (Acer Aspire One 725)
This video shows how to upgrade the memory in a laptop or netbook computer. The specific computer shown in an Acer Aspire One 725, which is upgraded from 4GB to 8GB of RAM. However, the process is the same for any laptop or netbook.

Clear, concise and so british. Thanks for that video of high quality!
Wonderful! I still find it amazing how well a netbook like this can perform with the right upgrades. :)
It depends on the size of the SSD -- on my main editing/CG PC I have Windows 7 and all software on a 256GB SSD. The only exceptions are swap and cache files for PhotoShop and Adobe Premiere, which would rapidly destroy the thing. All media files are on separate hard drives. The key thing is not to overfill an SSD -- leave at least 10 per cent unallocated for wear levelling.
Needed to know how to remove the ram - showed it perfectly, thanks.
Yes, according to Acer the Ascpire One 725 can only go to 4GB (I had a 4GB model). But many people on my other Aspire One 725 upgrade video reported a successful upgrade to 8GB, so I tried it in this video -- and it works no problem. :)
The Toshiba Satellite L300D has two DDR2 667 SO-DIMM slots and can take a maximum of 4B of RAM (a 2GB DDR2 SO-DIMM in each slot). So if you have less than 4GB, you will be able to increase the memory just as I've shown here. I would suggest running the crucial scanner to find suitable RAM. Good Luck! :)
I just ordered the exact same ram chipset for my 725 Netbook, and it works flawlessly. Quick and easy install, very nice! Thanks again for the informative vid and the help. Greatly appreciated..

I've got the 725 0488, will the 8gb work? what model do you have?
I was looking for ever on how to upgrade my ram on my laptop. all the videos I came across didn't help. I love yours, very simple and easy and very informative. I now have a laptop running 16GB of DDR3 RAM as suppose to the 8GB of ram I was running. Thank you!
Yes, that was the video in which I messed up! :) Though it is a generic key for all Aspire One 725s.
Yes, this will work fine. Aspire One 725 netbooks come with either 2GB or 4GB, depending on the country they are sold in. But elsewise they are identical and can take 8GB. So you could take yours to either 4GB or 8GB. :)
No problem -- more videos very soon! :)
Nice !!!!! Finally upgraded my Acer aspire one 725, went from 2 gigs of ram to 8 gigs corsair 1333mhz & also upgraded my Hdd to a SSD 120 gb.. My netbook is now running super smooth & has no lags. Thanks for the inspiration Christopher............. :)
Ah, thanks for this -- a very good point you make. I had forgotten that Microsoft artificially constrained Win 7 starter to only work with 2GB of RAM, and also Windows 7 Home edition to 8GB, even in the 64 bit version. But this could be overcome by "upgrading" windows -- or installing Linux! :)
And it's been a while since your last video. Good to see you.
ALL YOUR PRESENTATIONS ARE SUPER, I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY, WELL DONE THANK YOU FOR LEARNING
I have actually started making this very video -- and I'm going to include a history starting with early SIMMs onwards (I've been collecting older bits of hardware for some time!).
Yes, this is what Acer claims. But many people told me on my other Aspire One 725 video that it would work with 8GB, so it tried it. And it works fine. I've been using the machine most days since March 2013 when I did the upgrade and have had no problems. But as I say in the video, you ignore manufacturer's specs and memory scanners at your own risk! :)
Hopefully! But it is not top of my list (just because other videos are already started!). I have nearly finished my 3D printing book, and will then get back to video production proper -- and will try to get up-to-date with my comments! :)
Good idea for a video -- I will be more active here by mid-April, as I'm spending most of the first three months of 2013 writing a new book on 3D printing. But that will be the last book for a while, so I can get back to more videos. This one was a nice, quick thing to keep the channel active! :)
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience with us! You do an excellent job of going through the process step by step and explaining the importance of each step. I hope you are getting paid in some fashion for the skills you have. God bless!
I love these videos even tho i know all about computers! :D I like the way you explaining which is rare to find these days.
Very, very soon! One should go up on "3D printing hardware" this weekend (8th/9th June) -- plus also a channel trailer. I've then got a lot of videos planned for the rest of 2013 on all kinds of things! :) In the early months of this year I was tied up writing, and am currently marking exams, but all that will soon be over and I'll be back to ExplainingComputers videos! :)
Thanks for the video. I have this exact model with Win 8. I bumped the memory from 2GB to 8GB exactly following these steps. Bought the same memory you used. Crucial's website scanner only recommends up to 4GB when I ran it but the 8GB does report as compatible on the webpage. This message was posted on the upgraded netbook. Saving up to try the SSD upgrade you did for this Netbook model next. Thanks again!
Thanks for this, I just upgraded my Acer 725 to 8GB and it works great.
Thanks man. That helped a lot. I installed crucial 8 GB SODIMM in my acer Aspire E-5-573G laptop!

Thank you for sharing this video. I'm considering buying an aspire one on clearance but it only has 2gb ram. I want to edit photos on it and I understand that 2gb ram would be insufficient. So now I have the confidence to buy the Aspire and upgrade to 4 (or 8 gb).
True, but my worry is not what is on the drive (where all key files are encrypted via TrueCrypt), but the web accounts to which I remained logged-in (I write in Google Docs). By password-protecting Windows it is (pretty much) impossible for somebody to pick up my laptop and access my Google and other accounts. OK, you could get data from the SSD, but Google's two-factor security would hopefully prevent connection via any other device -- unless my smartphone was stolen and hacked too! :)
Thanks, this is valuable information. I've had trouble with memory usage on Windows_8, so this may fix some of my problems.
Thanks for uploading this! I'd been looking at the 725, but I was concerned about whether I'd be able to upgrade/repair it easily. It was actually quicker and simpler to upgrade than my first-generation MacBook, which wasn't too bad aside from screws.
im long time user of acer ao725. i just upgraded standard ram, i use corsair vengeance. it works perfectly. i think win 8.1 is more fit than win 7 for ao725, but thanks for the video
Thank you so much for your valuable tutorial video. i just upgraded my 8 years old Acer aspire One 4GB to 8GM. 👌🙏

Chris this is a great video. keep the hard work!
You are right -- it is excessive. No performance improvement! :) However, it does mean that I can safely turn off the Windows swap file, which will increase the life of the SSD I previously fitted in the machine. And it have me something to make a video about! :)
Wow, very nice video! Thank you so much. I have a question Could I upgrade my AO725 - 0444 from 2 GiB to 8 GiB?
Upgraded my 12 year old 725-0899. New battery, 8GB RAM, 500G SSD, and linux lite. 90 seconds to boot, 10 seconds to full desktop from login prompt. Performance is good. $13 for the RAM, $23 for the battery. the SSD was an unused spare.
Very nicely! :)
Older memory gets expensive j because it is not made anymore, so it becomes a (limited) supply and demand thing. Very annoying though that all forms of DDR2 are now much more expensive than DDR3 -- hence forcing bigger upgrades than just memory. :(
I'd love, love, LOVE (did I mention love?) to do these fun technology videos like yours.
Dear sir....i have an aspire one D270..i love it and i want to upgrade it.. i trully want to follow your steps and upgrade to an 8 Gb ram and to a 1Terra ssd!!will the cpu survive through those upgrades?its an intel atom N2600 ( 1.6 GHz, 1MB L2 cache) thanks in advance for your response
another great video! One question. My co-worker said before upgrading ram (I'm going 8-16 on my hp dv7t quad core) to make sure that the motherboard will be able to support that change. It did the crucial scan as well but want to make sure before installing. Thanks again.
Hello all, I upgraded my Acer Aspire One 725 - C7Xbb ( with AMD C-70 APU) from 4 GB to 8 GB RAM some days ago just as explained and this works well. Im running Windows 10 Home 64-bit and use a 256 GB SSD from Toshiba for data storage. The new RAM is a 8 GB HyperX Impact Black 1G x 64-bit (8GB) DDR3L-1600 (PC3L-12800) CL9-9-9 204 pin SO-DIMM memory modul (type HX316LS9IB/8) running at 1,35 Volt.

That ram use pc3L low voltage?
I would only attempt this on those (fairly rare) laptops that have their CPU in a socket. Where the CPU is soldered, it is not an upgrade that I would attempt! :)
Yes, this would work for you too! :)
Like this Mr. Chris ... I'm going to buy a 4gb memory for the pc (which in the other video I said is the most basic version of the acr725 with 2gb) and I ran in the system the specr prirform, he says that the Pc has 2 banks of memory of which one is being used, as I opened the pc as you teach it and if there is capacity for two memories, now, out of curiosity, how do you think you could insert the second memory ?? ? Thank you very much (sorry my English, is the translator google)
depends if the CPU can addres it. some low end cpus are limited to slower modules, like the AMD c-60 which only addreses 1066 ddr3. however as amd apus have a intergrated graphics chip that highly benefit from faster ram its always suggested to use faster ram purely for the buildin gpu.
Personal preference, and also it wastes fewer resources. I don't like an operating system that gets in the way! :)
pretty cool idea, I was never thinking about it, until photoshop cc came out ^^
In that case yea, everything is transferred over when you clone a hard drive. If you have important data and you'd like to retain the setup you have on your existing drive, then its a good idea to clone your hard drive.
May I know what kind of performance upgrade in term of day to day task can I expect by ram upgrade? More multitaking? Or handling process intensive work faster. Wish to learn also how dual channel work
Have you attempted to upgrade the WiFi in this to dualband? or dualband with Bluetooth? i have the 722 and have upgraded both the drive and the ram but i have not had much luck finding a half mini pci-e that will work in my machine, i have not had much luck looking over the white lists either, any help would be great...

I've been hiding away writing a book. Nearly finished now though! :)
OH MAN I MISSED YOU !!! GOOD VID
Aver aspire e51 411 c5z7 can the ram be upgraded? Currently has 2GB installed if so how does one do this? And which kind of ram does one purchase? Many thanks
Because the onboard graphics uses some of the memory. :)
Nice laptop :-) cold you make a video of how to upgrade a cpu on a laptop or putting a new operitive system like windows8??? Hope that you read this comment, make more videos!!!
Very easy upgrade. I always wanted to upgrade my old Sony Viao Laptop from 2009 but it uses SO-DIMM DDR2 800 memory. I check on some sites like Newegg and Amazon and it is very very expensive 150+ dollars. Any clue why that would cost so much? I though older memory is suppose to be cheaper. My only though was that it might be a difficult type of memory to manufacture.
Thank you
Christopher, if I were to install my operating system on an SSD (Windows 7), what do you recommend I keep on it and what I keep on other internal drives? (Mainly weather things like programs and personal files should be kept on the SSD with the OS or on a separate HDD)
Its 2023 and i have also this kind of acer version and i want it also to upgrade it, is there a new version of it? Is this still available? Thanks 😊
Thank you so much sir.
Do you have a review for this machine?
I'm upgrading the RAM on this exact same model netbook (though mine initially came with a mere 2GB of RAM). I saw in the video where you said you knew that 8GB would work, does that hold true for a machine running Windows 8.1 as well? It crawls with 2GB and I thought I'd have to make do with 4GB, which would be a big help, but I'm certain it would be smooth as silk with 8GB. Any info you could give me would be great as after seeing your video on installing an SSD (which I wasn't aware was an option for this system) I plan on doing both projects together.
What is that empty slot below the ssd and left of the wireless card used for? 3:07 Seems to be related to the SD card reader on the left. or is that an ExpressCard i can't tell.

I think express card, yes.
Just wondering, it is possible to upgrade the CPU of a laptop or netbook? I have seen others do videos on that and I would like to ask an expert to make sure.
Hi, I hope you will read this, does this laptop have removable video card or CPU ? Thank you!
there are a few frames which are very clean. only a little bit small.
Good video
Sorry, but this is wrong (and not least because in most machines you cannot **fit** 3.25GB). No 32 bit PC will be able to **use** 4GB due to the requirement to address video memory and other parts of the system. But I have seen 32bit PCs that have 3.5GB or even more of useable memory.
Would you ever consider doing a review of your netbook? I have been looking at the model of Aspire One you have but can't find a decent review on KZread.
are you transfer/backup data from the old memory ram to the new or not?
Does upgrading your computers memory increase the shared graphics memory and therefore the graphics performance? Or is the only way to increase graphics performance to upgrade the graphics card itself?
Thanks
thanks for the video, I see you got the same laptop that I, and the question is this, mine came with windows 8 64bit and it would change to the 32bit because they need certain drivers that are only for 32bit, as you try and change the system but would not let me boot, I enter the BIOS, there did not appear what is the stick, and you appreciate to help me because I appreciate that very good video now also buy you one of 8gb :)
I'm planning to buy a little ASUS notebook and immediately upgrade the ram, however, the battery is built into the system in such a way I can't reasonably remove it without going deeper than I dare go into a laptop. What's your recommendation for swapping/upgrading ram when removing the battery is not an option?
No, it isn't! Where the blur disappears the sticker is moving enough to be blurred anyway. I got caught with this one before, but not again! :)
Thanks for the video and letting me know that my 725 is upgradeable to 8GBs of RAM. Would 8GB DDR3-1600 SODIMM work as well, or does it need to be 1333?
@ExplainingComputers
8 жыл бұрын
+Travis Ridley The 1600 MHz SODIMM should work fine (assuming all other specs match), though it would clock at 1333 in a 725.

Nicely explained. U'r laptop seems to have only one slot for ram.
Where did you buy this specific memory card? I have this exact netbook.
Hi, i would like to update my acer aspire 5349-2592. It is the same procedure to do like in the video? Thanks
I have question sir,My laptop acer series ao725-c7cbb. whether memory can be upgraded up to 8gb ram?
fi you have a 64bit and can upgrade over 4gb what is the highest you can go?
It depends on your operating systemand your machine. Here I think the Acer Aspire One 725 cannot go about 8GB (although Acer list it as 4GB). On many other PCs you can fit far more memory, though different versions of the same operating system limit how much you can use. For example, the limits for Windows 7 are as follows: Starter: 8GB Home Basic: 8GB Home Premium: 16GB Professional: 192GB Enterprise: 192GB Ultimate: 192GB
However i do recommend actually following the oem website.the gateway sx2850 can only use up to 8gb ram though there are 4 dimm slots, and trying to boot with 12gb and even 10gb is a failure.it is not a memory channel problem as 6gb worked.played around with 2 4gb dimm and 2 2gb dimm.
Well thats handy. I need to updrade to RAM Memory for my uncle. And right when i take did a research how to do it you uploaded the video.
Hello, ¿can you show me please where it is located wifi card? I wolud like to directly connect an antena for a better signal.
Hi one question, i have the same specs, but i saw the one with 1600MHz at the same price than the 1333MHz one, is it worth it, or is it risky to get the 1600MHz memory?
any suggestions for an upgrade from the AMD C-60 APU as I'd like more than the 1.333 GHz but that's already over clocked from 1 GHz
Acer do seem to have artificial maximum RAM figures; I recently bought an old Aspire 1603LC from a market stall and asked for the RAM to already be upgraded from 512MB to 2GB at point of purchase, and it works fine but I since found out it officially takes 1GB max lol
When considering the 4 GB memory limit on a 32-bit system you are referring to a Windows OS system, not Linux.
i have a toshiba laptop..and i have a one 4gb memory ddr3 pc3-12800 installed...sir what type of memory should i buy to add my ram to make it 8gb,,my toshiba has a vacant slot for memory,,
I'm thinking of upgrading my Acer aspire one 725(AMD C-70 APU, 2gb) with 4gb ram...Does it make significant difference? How about running Adobe premiere pro cc with this upgrade...??? ;)

It's good anyway to have as much RAM as you can. I have installed 20 GB on my PC and I've made a HDD cash volume with 8 of them.
Oi, ajuda por favor. Comprei e ainda nao chegou a memoria 1600 Mhz 8 GB. será compativel com aspire one 725 - 0802
Thanks for the video! Looking to do the same! Will the exact ram work for the Aspire One 725-0826 model? Currently on 2 gigs but I'd like to upgrade to 8 if possible. Please let me know.. Thanks. Again, great vid.

Thank you for this awesome video, but i have something on my mind, on minute 1:52 you showed Crucial 8GB DDR3, but on 3:30 you put Micron 8GB DDR3L, so i want to clarify that the ram used for this system is DDR3L (1.35v) not the regular DDR3 (1.5v) right?

Why you couldn't use the full 4GB if you have a 64-bit O.S.?
i have a question sir. I bought corsair vengeance 8gb to replace my old ram to replace my old ram(my laptop is acer es1-711). After I replaced the old ram in to the new one I then started my laptop but the problem is my screen is all black but my laptop is just working fine. so my question is how do I fix it?
