when I was a teenager I was in the LAPD Explorers and we got a chance to go wash and wax the LAPD choppers and go on a fly along. It was fun until We all started getting a bit nauseous from all the tight turns, but it was amazing and I still treasure that experiance to this day.

I was born and raised in LA and although I don’t live there anymore I don’t hate the place like a lot of people do. My one wish before I go to the other side is to take a a flight on a LAPD copter around the west side of LA and/or ride with the mounted unit down Wilshire Blvd 😀
Love the Rebels sticker
Nice to see things from the Ghetto Bird's perspective 🚁
The LAPD Helicopter Division is stationed on the roof of C. Erwin Piper Technical Center. The police heliport was brand new back in 1983, when the movie Blue Thunder was shot. It´s an old movie but a great one. In preparation for the 1984 L.A. Olympics, the LAPD receives an experimental new helicopter with a lot of high tech gadgets and weapons (for that time) built in. Near the end of the movie are fantastic helicopter Vs. helicopter chase/combat scenes.
A siren on a helicopter.... what a time to be alive
Nothing like a spectacular view of L.A., particularly the Downtown area.
She's a Rebel! 🤟
Aww man! Thank you for taking us along!!! I LOVE to fly and this video is so much fun! Let's get the bad guy and thank you for watching out for us!
I was a TFO for the Fresno Police Aviation Unit for 12 years. Best job in the department I ever had.
Air ships are the best.. I have had the opportunity to do a ride along up in the helicopter. On our shift we observed the suspect hiding at the end of the building, he had a knife. We observed many suspects and was able to relay to ground units making it safer for the officers responding!! Thank you for the eyes in the sky

When I was a kid in the late 70’s my family lived in LA. I remember one night hearing a helicopter hovering above our house so my brother and I went outside to see what was going on. It turned out to be an LAPD helicopter. They shined the night sun spotlight on us and then yelled on the PA to get back in the house. The only time in my life I’ve ever been yelled at by a helicopter lol

Super awesome video...thx for sharing..
Utmost respect for law enforcement!! As a long time pilot; rotor & fixed wing, this brings back years of memories flying in the LA Basin. Also reminds me of all the noise complaints from citizens from the "news helicopters". It's not the news, or VIP, or tour helicopters making the noise... It's the daily (and nightly) low-level flight operations as highlighted here that create the continuous noise problems. As an ex-military pilot and pilot that flew in the LA Basin for over 30 years I still ask myself the question, "Is there really a need to fly at 200 to 500 agl to conduct these operations?
@colt10mmsecurity68
Жыл бұрын
Uhhh, yes! No matter what camera system or moving map we have in those aircraft, nothing beat working a call at 300’ agl, with eyes outside. Nothing. We catch more badguys that way than flying at 1000’ looking at a stupid camera and with our head ps “inside” all the time. …It’s how we roll.
so amazing, never been in a helo. that would be so kewl to do. seeing Cali from that view was awesome

Man I thought they stopped doing airship ride alongs!! I went up with them in 2017 and had a blast. We had a 211 where a lady armed with a knife robbed a chinese restaurant and then hid in a parking garage across the street for half an hour haha. They showed me dicaprios mansion as well. Cool group of dudes!
Dumb question!! On the left side of the helicopter cockpit, it looks like binoculars. Is that what they are? That Hollywood pass is incredible! Dream of the day I could do a fly along like that. Is the hard turns out wrenching? The talent of the pilots of these helicopters is amazing. I love watching them.
@colt10mmsecurity68

They are “stabilized” binos. You push a button and the internal gyro stabilizes the image you’re looking at. Made by Canon.
Choppers are an invaluable asset to a city like LA they are fast and can give different perspectives to those units on the ground. For anyone who has never flown in one They are very noisy and vibrate a lot so not ideal camera or gun platforms. Most of my flying was done during cold war exercises in West Germany and operational tours of N Ireland but they are great fun but freezing when flying without doors on lol.. great vid by the way

flying helicopters are very different from fixed wing aircraft. Your feet and hands are always on the controls and you become one with the machine. one hand on the cyclic, the other hand on the collective and both feet on the anti torque pedals.
@colt10mmsecurity68
Жыл бұрын
In the ASTAR, you can keep your feet flat on the floor flying all day, including landing without using the pedals. (Run-on landing with a tail rotor control failure or tail rotor drive failure, as the ASTAR RFM calls it). It’s really a non event once you know how to do it and practice it almost daily)😉

@colt10mmsecurity68

@@spankyharland9845 No, not exactly. We have Garmin full 3-axis autopilot for helicopters! The system you’re talking about was “Helisas,” made by companies like Genesys (formally “Chelton”). Garmin has developed a full autopilot (GFC 600H, Google it) for certain helicopters and the ASTAR is one of them, I fly and instruct with them in ASTARS for a living. You can load up an instrument approach and the autopilot will fly the helicopter down to minimums. You can set it up to orbit over a location and go hands free. Garmin also has a “leveling” feature that in the event one goes inadvertent IMC, a push of the button and the helicopter will right itself and fly straight/level in the clouds and without the use of hands or feet on the cyclic or pedals. The only control that at this time is NOT controlled by the autopilot is the collective. However, Garmin will be coming out with that next, within a couple of years. They are working on that as we speak.

I saw a Air Unit a few days ago and it was circling, after a few minutes of circling it began gaining altitude (maybe about 600/700 feet), it turned, went straight down like a fighter jet and I didn't see it again. I've seen this before but I don't know what technique that is or something. Anyone feel free to explain

FYI: I don't know who put the info up about the aircraft, but "N230LA" is not the serial number. It's the FAA Registration number (similar to a car's license number) and is commonly called the N-number for obvious reasons. The serial number is assigned by the manufacturer, the N-number by the FAA. Thanks for putting in the blurry stills. They really clarified things. Also, this is America. There's no "u" in "harbor".
