Came here by accident and dropped my abo. High appreciation from my side. As Guitarist and amp tech i am very excided exploring your videos, although there may not be too much guitar related stuff. Forgot the young dudes name, good on ya, synyster gates is a great idol, i hope to see you on stage one day. Cheers

It sounds a but nasilic compared to my AOR 100 but I'm running it through JCM 800 cabs from the early 80s upper and lower so it's a bit punchy and will rattle.... your teeth ...the dishes ...pictures lol ..... Great video tell Chris to keep jammin.... I started when I was his age and I'm turning 60 in march..... Wonderful videos both 1 and 2 got some newish Mullards in and have some GT # 8s on the way ... I'm not happy with the sound since the transformers and tubes were replaced ... the bias might be a bit on the cold side .... I liked the pre damaged tone much better you got me in the ballpark of understanding my rig by a long shot !!!! Now if I can do this without turning into Thor Odinson LOL !!! THANKS SO MUCH !!! TT

Nice videos. I think guitar amp wattage is measured at 10% distortion, so maybe it will do 100w with the low bias?

Hi Tony. Another great video. You’re ability not only as a detail oriented technician but also as a teacher really shines in this video. Thanks to Chris for his contribution as well. I’m not a musician either but being an audio enthusiast it was interesting to know some more about the instrument I would like to be able to play and more of your history along with. Thanks for the vids. You keep making them and I’ll keep watching. God bless

All three of my Marshalls need low transconductance power tubes. Otherwise they run too cold even with the bias pot maxed out. But once they're biased up they sound great. Please more tube guitar amp videos!

Great work Tony.. I used a 1969 Laney (Supergroup Mk 1 100 watt) amp that Lydon Laney originally built in his dad's garage when he started. They were used by Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath and Dave Hill of Slade to name but a few. From memory it was a tag board construction and used good quality components. The later amps still 'sounded' the same as the early ones , but had a reputation of not being as reliable as the earlier models. Like me, many preferred them to Marshalls as they would overdrive and sustain sooner at the same perceived output levels. More guitar amp repair videos would be welcome by me..Loved the guitar you built as well.

I was having trouble with when boost was engaged, so I switched all my pramp tubes. 1with 2 and 3with 4. There's 2 different ecc83 in the pre amp. Is that a problem. Power tubes are the same

Excellent! Thanks Tony! Yes, I would personally like to see a mix of Audio Hi-Fi amps and guitar amps. The Hi-Fi amps take quite a bit of time, where the Guitar amps can be much quicker, especially if you get into a pre-circus board SE tube amp and skip some of the math. Go for it!!

I have this amp , 15 years ago the amp started squealing and one of the power tubes blew up. I have not used since that happened. living in Hawaii i don't think there are capable skill technicians to fix and if there is they would charge a Fortune to fix it

gm tony. i got a kick out of this vid mainly because i play through a peavey roadmaster(rebuilt with real components). one quick lookup will reveal why in regards to output tube matching. i replace them in matched sets always when even one gets out of spec(it's not hard at all to tell when that happens). the instrument of choice to play through it? a washburn bass with pickups wired for stereo output when recording. :-) good maintenance practices have served me well on this amp as i have owned it from day one(new). best mods for it? a circulation fan in the case and audio grade poly caps in the signal path. not a single ceramic can be found in it now(eliminated microphonics from those caps used in the stock configuration). thanks for the vid as it was a good start to the day with the morning espresso.

From the primary taps connect anode to anode to reveal the dc offset value that remains after doing exact current setting for each tube may reveal a misconseption that setting current for both tubes the same will not always result in percise Idle offset at 0dc Depending on the the output trannys quality or condition with any given set of tubes. Then would require an ajustment for one tubes current to be set slightly lean to aquire it.what is more important?two tubes set the same current for exact power with some offset, and or one tube set lean to maintain +0-idle.as we know how critical it is for transistor amps can result in voice coil burnout and performance losses then why is it not considered to be as critical in tube amps.unless the amp comes equipped with the balance meter of course, this setting is not shown in setups I see on all youtube channels.Tony would you please thankyou.

When you have a certain age, you may have inherited a couple of tools from your father, an uncle or your grandfather, who are no longer with you. I have a couple of hand tools that I got from my granddad. I love to use these tools, as they always bring back memories of the person they used to belong to.

Glad you pointed this out, I ran across this when trying to find matched sextets of EL34's, when sellers sell "matched" valves I've yet to see one that lists the parameters they are matched to. And matched to what degree? 1%, 5% 10%? And as you point out, under what conditions they're tested at also apply. The best way to match tubes is in the amp they're going to be used in, but who can afford to buy 100 valves? Thanks, another grand video....DA.

18:30 - Tube amps want to deliver the same current regardless of load (AC current source). If there is no load, the voltage will rise significantly, causing arcing and burning of the output transformer.

on this amp and amps with high Z outputs and no feedback yes. Amps with a lot of feedback or low Z triodes you can disconnect the load and see little difference in output voltage.

I haven’t watched this video yet but saved it to my watch list. But my thoughts are that a push pull amplifier have a strong tendency to cancel out even order harmonics generated in the power amp section. Having an output transformer that isn’t exactly symmetric or having tubes that aren’t perfectly balanced is a way to bring back some of those coveted even order harmonics back in. In a four tube output section, I wouldn’t bother with 4 matched tubes. Maybe 2 matched output pair for the two tubes on one side of the phase inverter, and another matched pair for the other side. But don’t bother matching both pairs together

Hi Tony. Love your vids especially your teaching acumen. I am restoring a late 60s Fisher 400 . Your warning about not operating a valve amp without an appropriate load resistor or speaker is understood. Except that the 400 has a slide switch to disable the speakers and headphone jack. When the speakers are ‘off’ the the opt is grounded through a 25 ohm 5 watt resistor regardless which impedance tap is being used. So, how does this resistor and wattage provide the proper impedance match?

Does the thing about not running a tube amp without a (speaker) load connected also apply to transistor/solid state guitar amps, powered PA mixers, PA heads, and outboard power amps, etc.?

  • @kostaskritsilas2681

    @kostaskritsilas2681

No, it does not. Transistor units don't use output tranformers, so the just don't put out any power. When a tube amp is run without a load, the power tubes are dumping power into the output transformers and there is no place for the power to go. This can cause the output tubes to overheat, the output transformer to overheat, power supply voltages to rise (perhaps over the voltage ratings of some components). Generally, bad stuff happens, from blown fuses to damaged output tubes, to melted output transformers.

Steve Hacker I went to CEGEP (French Canadian for College) in a 3 year Electronics technology program, which did cover semiconductor amplifier technology, AC machines (transformers, motors, and generators), communications (RF theory and transmission line theory), digital electronics (logic and a little bit of software). After graduation, worked at Marconi (military radios), Philips Electronics (Word Processors and PCs, from bench tech to running the ICT department), a few small start ups (LAN and commercial network equipment), then at Nortel Networks (High Frequency Microwave and Cellular equipment), to a small oil and gas services company (IT support and design implementation of a unified network phone system). I have taught myself about tube electronics on my own, out of interest.

Matching is not a good idea is better to have the tubes unmatched per channel that is, something to do with feedback and oscillation, there's an article in Leak's journal on his tl12 why this is a bad idea
