Landscape Plans | California, Cottage, & French Inspired

Today I share some new outdoor furniture finds. All of our outdoor furniture was purchased secondhand from Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and Nextdoor. I also share some of our ideas for our future landscaping and backyard plans. Living in california it's important that we incorporate California native plants and native flowers to support wildlife like the monarch butterfly, bees, and birds.

If you haven't already, you should take a day trip to Walnut Creek and visit the Ruth Bancroft Gardens. They have really amazing xeriscaping so could probably give some great climate specific botanical inspiration!

Thank you for the recommendation Christine! I haven’t visited many gardens in general so this sounds awesome especially with emphasis on Xeriscaping (I just learned that this means little irrigation/maintenance which is important on my end). Thanks again for sharing! ❤️😊

More great scores❣️To me lounge chairs are more for by a pool so loving the restoration look. I can not believe how large your lower area is. I think the garden idea and growing your own veggies would be great!!!!! . In long term you may think of installing a pool. Your area gets so hot and that’s a great way to enjoy a retreat in your own home. Evening swims then sitting by that great fire pit how fun ! Your space is so big. I was shocked lol….. my son lives in Chico and they paid 20k for their pool and it’s the best thing they could have done because of the heat. I would take your time, definitely focus on a nice seating area, definitely focus on a small shed especially since you have so many cushions, and I would focus more on a veggie fruit garden as you have so many stunning flowers on the top part. There is only so much you can do in a summer. Little by little. It took me 18 years as a single mother to get my plain builder grade home up graded inside the way I wanted ( now that my dear is a loooong time) new floors, new carpets in just 2 rooms, granite countertops, painting the entire inside ( it has high ceilings. Changing and customizing light fixtures, kitchen cabinets painted - New hardware put on those cabinets. It took forever ❤👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🤗🤗🤗🤗🙋🏻‍♀️FUN …FUN video. Outside of entire house painted, massive slab of concrete outside, the side yard was my vegetable garden / I miss it- I’m renting it and live with my partner as you know. This past May was 22 years that I purchased my home. If I ever move back I’m putting in a pool as it gets so hot down in the valley.

@@MelbaMakes oh honey you will be able to grow so much in that sunny area also getting few blue berry bushes is great. You know it was such a great feeling when I would bring in a basket of cucumber, tomatoes, green beans, oregano, green onions, mint , lettuce I grew all the lettuces, zucchini and I could make my own salads. Man there is nothing like a fresh salad homegrown just the best. I just want you to know that everything takes time and wanted to use myself as an example. Wow! $20,000 for a pool is a great price. We're in Florida as well as my younger son's family. They put in a pool 4 years ago and it was $60,000. It wasn't too big and it was only 4 feet deep for the children. I know there's a difference when there are a lot of extras.

Beautiful! The teak furniture was such a find! Great shopping. I was going to suggest a pillow to hide the discoloration, but saw that you already did that. You can always have new covers made for them down the line. I loved your fire pit. Everything looks lovely. I agree about using native plants and flowers, especially drought tolerant varieties. I confess that I love formal gardens; however, my gardener (my husband), loves a more natural look. Our backyard was more a wilderness until I pointed out that our very young grandchildren couldn't even go out because it was so wild. He went on a year-long building project. We had two handymen who can do anything. They built huge decks, walkways, a bridge and a screened-in cottage. The cottage was my answer of where to out the exercise equipment. They built tall screens to ensure privacy. We didn't lose any trees, but all the undergrowth was removed. He planted hundreds of native plants and experimented with some flowering bushes. We had a tire swing hung from a hundred-year-old oak, swings from archways on the walkways, and a huge teeter totter in the shape of an airplane with seats and a cockpit. I want to get rid of it as it wasn't very popular with the grands. I'd like to have a firepit there, or maybe a gazebo, lol. I think the building days are over. I can't wait to see what else you do to your garden. Take care, Linda 🦋

Thank you Linda! It does look like the reverse side of the fabric is not faded so my mom is going to help me try to re-sew them on the reverse side. We will see if we can get that to work out. It sounds like you and your husband have done so much to your property to make it a wonderful space! We are enjoying the firepit and recommend it if it’s an option you are considering, so cozy at sunset and when temperatures drop! It sounds like I share both you and your husbands preferences as I’m drawn to both formal and wild gardens 😄 I hope you are having a lovely summer enjoying your outdoor space Linda 😊🌷

I love your garden it's so green and lush and the different levels and the creek make it very interesting. Good idea to use native plants and cut down on watering. Those RH chairs were such a good find!! I love the wrought iron ones too though. My balcony overlooks the Thames and when I first moved in I made huge (expensive) mistakes with plants. Now I have coastal and drought resistant type plants that tolerate the wind and river mists much better and have saved myself a lot of disappointment ☺

A lot of times people are trying to get rid of things as quickly and as easily as possible so Lugg is usually one of the fastest options especially after factoring in that I’m not always able to lift things myself and may not have someone to help me at the times that something needs to be picked up!

From my research it’s not necessary (I recommend checking out the article “Why Teak Oil Can Be Harmful for Your Teak Furniture” teakanddeck.com). I have never used teak oil but I recently considered a Teak Sealer which is different. Since I’ve had my teak over past few years I personally have never oiled it and never had any issues with it! I personally like the lighter less saturated color as well (and I appreciate the lower maintenance 😆). The above is for teak and different woods have different needs
