Landscape Photography | We All Make Mistakes

In this video I visit Tewet Tarn on the northern Lake District to photograph a snow covered Blencathra.
This was my second visit in 2 days. The first time I came away with some very poor shots and so I returned to correct the mistakes that I had made previously.
Personally I learn far more from every bad photograph that I take than I do from each good one.
I reflect the mistakes that I made on my previous visit and how I intend to correct them.

I would usually class mistakes as not getting the focus right, camera shake, burning out highlights etc. More technical. Not liking a composition is a matter of opinion and it’s good to push the boat out. If it works then you will gain a higher dose of confidence than what you would playing it safe.

Fair point James, I see where you are coming from. But obviously shot selection is hugely important in photography and if we get that wrong then we are facing an up hill battle. You know as well as I do just how important it is to get one in the bank before we start experimenting with new things.

Beautiful picture you got there! It really worked! Everyone makes mistakes, and getting confidence back after can be hard, depending on how big the mistake was. I'm not only talking about photography here, but about confidence in general. But I think the only way of getting your confidence back, is to go for it again. Whatever it was that knocked you down, if you care about it, try it again.. Cause if you don't, you might end up regretting it for the rest of your life.. Try it over and over again, and someday it will work. If you want it bad enough, it will happen. This is from a song called "Let it be me" from the Backstreet Boys and Steve Aoki: "Nothing is easy is worth it, nothing that's worth it is perfect", and I think this is the truth..

The 6D (mark I) will take moderate rain for an hour at least (tried and tested :-) before it starts malfunctioning. Then you let it dry by itself and it is as good as new. Of course if you can protect it so much the better. But do not worry too much about it. I have been impressed in general with how durable it has been for a 'prosumer' model after a decade of dust, bumps, rain, etc.Nice photos by the way.

Hi Chris, although not the first to comment, I reckon i was the first to view at 18 seconds after upload! I thought your Tewit Tarn image was really lovely and just hope no one says you should have been higher to get the reeds out of the reflected mountain :-). I do find split-toning a bit like Marmite for me. I would say you haven't used it here and if you have, it's very much to my taste because I can't tell? I agree 100% about learning from mistakes having just cocked up on my last film with a terrible image, but may still release it! It takes a brave photographer to show it on this platform! One thing I do slightly differently is the way I run workshops. I don't put the photographer on a composition. I generally take them to the locations where like you, I know there is a good image, but encourage them to find the sweet-spot themselves by guiding them in a way the aren't aware of. Making them work it out with just a nudge here and there as needed allows them to become more aware of what they should be looking for when they are alone! Perhaps I misinterpreted ?

  • @ChrisSalePhoto

    @ChrisSalePhoto

    4 жыл бұрын

We all have different approaches Simon. For each workshop and 1-2-1 I always start with composition that I know works. This allows me to discuss how all of the elements combine within the frame and helps to get the session off to a good start. After that I encourage people to explore other shots for themselves, stepping in to offer guidance as and when necessary. Starting with a 'winner' helps to build confidence. It is a technique I used when running courses in my previous life.

I recently spent a weekend at a coastal beach area with my photography club. First morning up for the spectacular sunrise. I thought I had the shot of the year. No. Looked at it on computer, too long a shutter speed and water was just a mass of light. Quite depressed but you could just have to get on with it. Tried next day & got quite a good shot. Confidence restored. Like riding a horse, if you fall off just get back on again. It is all you can do. But you must. Great video as usual and a great help.

Interesting to hear you talk about mistakes, because that's the theme I've been exploring on my channel - how I don't give up on dog agility when so much is going wrong. One way I use mistakes is - I bottle them up for future reference just to see how far I've come and see all the progress I've done. Our own progress often gets lost in everyday lives and it's very healthy to look back sometimes and realize how much better you're now than you were, so that's why I keep some evidence of my own mistakes. And, off course, there's the practical aspect of learning from mistakes - really analyse why that thing doesn't work, what aspects of it doesn't work and don't repeat the mistake or even better - attempt to do almost the same thing but now with some tweaks in place that makes it better. Anyway - no real creativity can exist without mistakes and although they tend to be painful at the time, they really do help us in the long run.

Hello Chris. It is always interesting to hear how you use your profession as a photographer to refine your senses. At the same time as I myself see that there is a motive, I also see after your reflection that it was perhaps not a motive. Or was it maybe one? Your energy coming out of your videos is contagious so that I started my first attempt on Saturday to make a video and uploaded it today. it is not perfect, far from it, but I uploaded it as motivation to do better next time. What i want to say is that the bad results are not only negative, actually more positive because they spur us on. The self-criticism we have spurs us on at the next opportunity to do it better. Greetings from Norway

I know you like reflections but The mountains were gorgeous and I wondered if you’d either stepped back 10 feet and used the grasses or got down low what that would have produced. I’d also agree, push your comfort zone and try some longer detail or abstract shots. I think pushing our comfort zone is just as important to growth. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Val - I didn't think about stepping back. Generally I like to keep my compositions as simple and as clean as possible. Dropping lower caused the reeds to cut even further into the reflections which as something that I wanted to avoid. I do think that a shot of Blencathra on it's own has huge potential but for that I am thinking of climbing up Clough Head, which is the mountain directly opposite it.

As for tips - I wouldn't call 'bad' photographs 'mistakes' - this adds a negative tone to what is essentially a key part of any learning experience. You sometimes have to try and see what works. If we got amazing pictures every time photography wouldn't be the challenge it is. 'Stepping stones' - that is what your photographs are - if you are lucky you keep going forwards but learning isn't a linear thing - we sometimes have to go backwards to eventually progress.

  • @ChrisSalePhoto

Very philosophical Chris, sometimes your favourite shot might not be everyone’s and conversely your “duds” might find an audience. Don’t overlook the power of cropping the images from your “moderately weather sealed Canon” :) but yes nothing wrong with a bit of self critique .

Cheers Chris - there are some images that even cropping won't save.

I think you are being too hard on yourself. I don't think it is a mistake to not come away with a decent image. Sometimes conditions are just not conducive to good photographs and compositions don't always work - not a mistake but a hazard of the occupation. Really like the final image. The 6D is remarkably resilient in my experience. I've dropped mine into a peat bog (it disappeared and I had to fish around to find it), had to wash mud off with a water bottle and only yesterday it got totally soaked in a blizzard - never missed a beat.

Really James? That is good to hear. I am a little precious with my 6D because of the issues it would cause if I was without it for any period of time.

Most of what I’ve learnt has been down to my mistakes that taught me not to do it again.

I think my best tip would be to not get too hung up on the failures, I'm terrible like that myself and have the past few months worked on changing the way I think, instead of nitpicking on every single little detail in every shot. Always looking for mistakes or something that's "not good" in my images.

That is very interesting Steffen - it's a very difficult balance to get write. It is necessary to critique our images in order to improve but being too critical is likely to have a negative impact.

@@ChrisSalePhoto absolutely, we need to be critical, I think thats very important but we should (or atleast I have to) learn to draw the line at some point instead of basically thinking myself down =)

I wouldn't class a suboptimal composition as a mistake rather a learning experience. Besides the obvious technical mistakes, perhaps realizing that focus stacking was required or multiple exposures needed are more mistake than a poor composition. I believe that analyzing what is good or not so good in a composition on the computer helps next time you are out. Another technique that I do is examine an image to see if there was a better composition within the frame, so I try different crops after the fact. Perhaps your 4 element composition would be great with 3 or 2 1/2 instead. I confess though that I am much more a mid telephoto landscape photographer than the wide vista so I am always looking to bring out specific elements of a scene. That image you too is excellent.

Thanks very much Mark, interesting to hear your perspective. My whole approach to photography is based on reviewing shots and returning at a later date to fine tune the composition.

for me it's usually a photo that looks good on my camera but when I get it on my computer screen, it lost it's appeal. Sometimes a good view doesn't always make a good photograph

That is definitely true - what looks good to the eye doesn't always translate to a photo.

Usualy I make mistakes (in every domain) when I'm feeling in a rush. Photographing should be done in a relaxing way ..... taking time for all technical and other elements.

I agree Russell - to err is human and all that. But on this occasion the image was shockingly bad, well below the standard that I have set for myself.
