I’m going through the same situation now. I live in an duplex and just because my neighbor recked there apartment the landlord asked me to leave so he can do upgrades that have nothing to do with my apartment. He never went up on the rent during the housing market rise now I think he wants his share now.

This is happening nationwide as it's the " loophole" the corp investors as blackrock are doing so they can jack up the rent double or triple what they are paying,as it's starting with those that were on the moritorium getting state, fed money to pay landlords, and they are going after section 8,affordable housing,as using renovation as a excuse,in some cases making no repairs, just cosmetic,as internation investors also from china,Canada are involved.

They are not just renovating those apts, they're renovating the whole neighborhood. They are going burn it all down and put up condos and townhouses, then jacking up the price and probably throw in an HOA on top.

They are definitely doing that in many low income residences around America. Memphis is one of those places. They are kicking people out, tearing down the blight and building up luxury homes, condos, and areas the people who originally lived there could never afford. Everything in the housing spectrum of America has definitely become about the almighty dollar these days, that’s for sure. My prayers are for the less fortunate.

The new owners have a right to renovate and reestablish the the property to attract tenants that will participate in caring for the facility and community. They cannot collect rent from inhabitable units, therefore they have to start from scratch. Being poor is not the problem with these tenants, the problem is the previous owners and current tenants did not maintain their community, so now these people are going to be displaced. Moral of the story for tenants and landlords, take care of your community.

I can put a horse in your back yard with photoshop and say you have a horse on public property and I was a news anchor trying to sale a story. Come on now. Don’t call out your people. Remember, these apartment property managers are owned by real estate investment firms. They take your rents and package together with other properties and turned into REIT securities, which are then traded back and forth with other investment firms like trading cards. The properties themselves are traded like cards with other real estate firms, which is why you see the management changing often on many of these apartments. They don't care about the renters, if you think about it.. it's like modern day legalized indentured servitude.

Regardless how you characterize it, they are still providing a service. If the tenants don't like the service, they are free to find other places to live, just like people shop for doctors, dentists, car repair shops, restaurants, etc. You don't like it? There are other options. Stop accepting managers and owners who allegedly "don't care about renters" and find those who do. Plenty of them.

My 200 unit apartment complex in south Florida was sold for $10 when the LIHTC program it was under expired. That's right, ten US dollars. My neighbor was a retired construction superintendent & knew how to find all the documents for our complex. It turns out, the original owner only wanted it as a tax offset to his high dollar rentals. When the credit ended, he sold it to a peer. The new guy immediately began remodeling. 2019 rent 1 BR $600, 2022 1 BR $1562. It's sad but it's one of the drawbacks of renting. If you read your lease carefully the tenant has very few rights. Landlords can legally terminate leases whenever they want for whatever they want. The best thing you can do for yourself is try to keep money set aside if this ever happens - hard to do when you're on gov't assistance or low income but it's an absolute must these days. This property has a lot of problems aside from the poor building conditions. Gentrification is necessary - gunfire during a tv interview is indicative of the bigger problem. I'm sure these residents won't be able to afford to return when the construction is finished. Unfortunately this is going to push more people into homelessness. But it's also an opportunity to find better and do better for their families.

However, people make mistakes, and correcting those mistakes isn't easy. Its allot easier to make a mistake than it is to correct it. Get pregnant, especially in a non-abortion state, now you have to provide for a child. Took out credit or thought you could manage something you couldn't? Enjoy bad credit if you stop paying, or live paycheck to paycheck. Got sick or have a condition? Here in America we deem some things medically necessary and some not, price of insurance is absurd, copays, medications, etc. Local hospital is for profit? Make just enough to be outside of poverty income? Enjoy your credit getting dinged yet again. List goes on. Systems in place will punish you for years for miscalculations or bad luck. When you're stuck like a slave, it makes attempting to break out of your situation hard to do, because if you don't hit everything with 100% success, you end up homeless because you can't pay your bills. These people don't got $200 to spare, let alone $2000 for a new place, taking risk isn't in their cards, so they end up stuck in a cycle.

Gentrification is everywhere. Unfortunately these tenants have no clue and sitting around thinking someone is going to help them. That's not how the world works and it's time for them to grow up.

"You can't put us out of our home. We have children." Reality check. Yes, they can. And they can do it if you don't have children. Whoever told you that having children would make life fair lied to you.

Ummmm, is there any reason why these tenants would to still stay at unsanitary and crime infested place?! I'm guessing its public housing or fixed income homes in other areas.

My friends landlord did this.... the difference is they gave everybody a moving fee. She got $3k and was able to move into another apartment. Once it's renovated they won't qualify or be able to afford the new rent.

They will renovate and then charge an extra $1000+ and an HOA fee for the pool, clubhouse, gym, and other amenities. These people won't be able to live there once completed. That company should put people up in temporary housing if it's just that simple. But we all know it's not.

I had the same thing happen. I signed the renewal on my lease (and accepted the fact that they were raising my rent....again) only to find out a few months later that they "decided not to renew my lease" and I had 30 days to leave. The day after I was gone, it was a real estate website.....I was renting a trailer and they had been pushing me to buy for years and I guess they give you 3 before they kick you out so that they can try to sell it instead. The renting is the gimmick to get you in the place, then they put a percentage of your rent into this "fund" for the down payment on the trailer itself. Even after purchasing, lot rent would have been $500 a month or more. The timing sucked. Not enough time at the job to get and prices for houses and rent shot up really shortly afterward. Now the same place at that same park would cost over $500 for the payment on the trailer...not including lot rent. Out of hand.
