Landing on a skinny little hybrid runway!
Concrete, asphalt, grass, water there's loads of runway surfaces however this time we land on something different.
Join me on this fun flight from North Weald EGSX to Darley Moor with explanations of the Transponder Mandatory Zone or TMZ at London Stansted and a transit of the EGNX or East Midlands controlled airspace.
Golf Foxtrot 22 channel here / @golffoxtrot22
My name is Terry Kent and I am a General Aviation PPL private pilot operating out of North Weald EGSX about 12 miles to the north east of London in the UK. Short Field is my channel focused on the lighter side of General Aviation including flight and airfield reviews, equipment unboxing and review plus all things private pilot related. I use various cameras to record my videos including GoPro and Insta 360 and stills and edit them in Adobe Premiere Pro, I am an animator as well and often use animations to describe situations more clearly I use Blender and Adobe After Effects for these. I always attempt to post my videos in the highest possible quality, normally 4k.
I fly a 2011 Pipersport two seat single engine aircraft that is also known as the PS28 or SportCruiser in the USA (America) it is known under the FAA as an LSA or Light Sport Aircraft and can be flown on a very basic license. In the UK it is a Part 21 airplane which requires a full licence but it's generally cheap to run, affordable maintenance and great value for money. It cruises at 100 to 105 knots and has superb short take off and landing or STOL capabilities. I visit farm strips, back country and short airfields, some of them dangerous and I try not to crash :-), as well as international airports and try to learn something new every time I fly.
#ppl #generalaviation #pilotlife
I fly VFR and IFR as well as visual and instrument approaches.
My videos may give helpful information to pilots but please remember these are just for entertainment, I am not an instructor nor should anything shown in my videos be used for real world aviation, also the airfields I visit may have totally changed or even closed since the making of the video so always consult the latest information for your country.
If you enjoyed this video, please give it a ‘thumbs up’ and leave me a comment in the box below, I love to read them and I also like to hear what you like or dislike about my video. I love the animations you do! All adds to the quality of your videos sir!
Thanks for the shout out and it was a pleasure to host and finally meet you in person.
Oh my lord! A couple of weeks ago, after 10 years off flying lessons, I thought "I fancy trying an Ikarus. They have one at Darley Moor!" Imagine my...ummmm...."surprise" when I saw the hard runway!! Worse still (or better still?) the instructor said that I was going to do the landing! Jeez. It's an experience! 🤣
My goodness that Giles chap is all over the place not just confined to his own channel.

Great watch. My home airfield!
My local airfield is grass. We definitely get a lot of mud this time of year in the winter. TMZ sounds like our class echo airspace.
You landed on a carpet! 😂. Nice video and great graphics. Thanks VB.
Lovely video Terry, always nice to see lots of options to land if you're willing to look, makes flying so much more fun.
Great vid, well except the part with Giles 🤣

Brilliant video, I really appreciate you sharing , particularly the things that don’t go to plan and what action you take and why.. ie Transponder dimming just as you need it.. orbits till you fix it.. genius! Also sharing transiting TMZ etc.. brilliant! Thank you

Terry amongst your many videos that was particularly informative 👍 Awaiting your visit to Clench common in the future.
Terry Excellent as always, don’t apologize for “uming and erring”, we all do it, especially when you get a distraction like the transponder issue you had. It would be interesting to see you’re SkyDemon log trace, with speeds etc.
Love these vids, you really get to see the GA side of the UK!!! Love it!!!

Great stuff Terry, I'd love to pop in to Darley Moor myself on the paramotor.
'Terry's Umms and Ahhs' 😵💫, it just takes one distraction doesn't it !? Made me feel better/encouraged about some of my performances with Heathrow and Farnborough, so thx for that ! (I won't be publishing mine needless to say.)
That was really good to watch. Love how informative it is too. I’m glad to see you are human with the “Ums and urhs” !🤣. It makes me want to come back to Uk to fly. A wonderful way to see the country.
Well... that was fun! Landing on a motorcycle trail lol.

Nice quick visit to Darley Moor! Brilliant vid once again Terry, well done sir!! Note to self, must learn to do the animations - oh, and I suck at voice-overs 🤣🤣🤣
All I can say is Foxtrot Yankee would be an even better registration.😊

You should come and visit us at Kernan Airfield, Northern Ireland. You get everything, a narrow runway, obstacles and a lovely gradient.

Brilliant vid as always Terry with the usual fantastic production quality! Thanks for the intro to Giles's channel!! If you are ever near Glos pop in for a coffee! Not a shortfield although they do have a grass strip and would be great to catch up mate! If you do it on a Saturday, you'll be on the live stream! 😀👍

A typically informative video from you. I suspect the Astroturf is what makes the runway look narrower than it is. I know they are trying to preserve it but a bit of weeding of the rest of it would possibly help too.
Excellent trip Terry - again lovely scenery -I am so jealous of all the lovely historic old WW11 airfields you have in your area to visit and which has actually been kept servicable with their deep history - we don't have that privilege down here in SA - enjoy mate! Safe skies! From ZA!

Beautifully filmed sir! 20 years ago we used to enjoy a day out to …“Shotteswell International “ ! (I had a share in a Rallye 110ST, and then a Warrior) Darley Moor was form motorcycle racers ! Lots of hard guys, good personalities but usually with a limp !

It's interesting for me to see the differences in flying microlights in the UK compared with here in New Zealand. Here are some of the things I've noticed about your flights - More atc comms. More noise abatement requirements. You can fly over built up areas (microlights here can't) You say dead side, we say non-traffic. You say "in the overhead", we just say overhead. Lots very similar though. It would be interesting to break down your typical costs - hangarage, insurance, club fees, medical etc 🤔
@ShortField
Жыл бұрын
In the UK this aircraft is not a microlight it is a Group A aircraft and you can't fly it on a microlight licence. We only just got the 600kg upgrade to microlights this year and it is only for new models and can't be re-classified retrospectively. As a factory built certified aircraft with a C of A our Sport Cruiser has lots of advantages over a microlight class aircraft, however we also have alot more costs :-(
@kkiwi54
Жыл бұрын
@Short Field Your Sport Cruiser could be in the Microlight or "Lightsport" category here. Lightsport is a kind of halfway house between Microlight and GA. Sucky that your new Microlight rules can't be applied retrospectively
so Terry, you didn't get your first experience in a chair in the air.... another time perhaps 👍
You got an overhead transit at East Midlands!!!!

I didn't recognise the AstroTurf as a runway when I went there initially. It looks way too thin
Does Stansted have primary radar any more? They wouldn't see you anyway if no transponder. Radio chatter is such a pain.
Cracking video as always, thanks Terry. Interesting on the RT. Could the added workload of the just solved transponder issue have been a factor?
@ShortField
Жыл бұрын
Thank you, just so bad at RT I'm not blaming the transponder :-)
Always wondered, when you transit across a live runway (East Midlands) is there not the risk of a potential go around from another aircraft coming close to you? Or can you only fly over when another aircraft is looking to take off?
"How many errs" I was just thinking how good your radio skills are! I would love to learn to fly but the radio communications puts me off. I would be asking them to repeat way too many times

A quik question as I've never been behind the controls of a sport cruiser. (Most of my time is in the Piper Tomahawk even as an instructor). Is your aircraft equipped with an autopilot ? It looks like it might be.
Awesome VDO.....I fly from Northweald.....I m interested in shared ownership of sports cruiser.....plz advise
Can you do a video where you fly over London? Are you even allowed to fly over the city?
