Richard keep up the good fight!!! A collective is always more effective than a singular…… As mentioned a group action bringing JLR to task for inadequate and substandard security that is not fit for purpose had far more traction than Mr Unhappy attempting to take on a mighty car manufacturer. As always informative, on point, and very passionate. Thank you

Seems like they're mugging you off, pushing responsibility for responding to you further and further down their hierarchy. You wrote to the CEO and are now dealing with someone from the PR dept.

He also wrote in the Times that it's not brand new, btw. A used one, for his girlfriend Lisa, complained that £200k for a new one is just too much, even for him. Richard, insurance offers probably meant when you install alarm your insurance will go up "JUST" 2 TIMES (wahey!!), if you use that steering wheel lock thingy then increase is 3x. Whatever you do, you can't have the same insurance cost like before. If you don't install anything the cost will go up 4+ times or more like quotations from your viewers show.....

Richard, I’m following this with great interest, as an Audi and Mk1 Focus RS owner. My gut feeling is JLR won’t cover the older cars, because they know they’re going to get stolen, and therefore JLR will be paying out hundreds of thousands of pounds, due to their poor security. They obviously can’t say this to owners, because that will harm the brand more so. They are only interested in cars whom have the latest security updates.

Thanks for this update Richard albeit a frustrating one - I have a suspicion that JLR are looking at this as a UK market issue rather than a global market issue. The difficulty for UK owners is that when large companies respond with noises through their ‘Comms’ team, you know you’re being ‘managed’ as a damage limitation exercise. Unsure of the stats on how UK sales contribute to global sales, but judging by the car transporters heading from the factory to the Port of Southampton, the majority of these are left-hand in Dubai or US specs. So what I’m suggesting is that if JLR can contain this issue through PR/Comms to the UK, it will be a worthwhile damage limitation exercise for their brand reputation/overall global sales. Sometimes, when you’re in a war, it pays to think like the enemy and sadly this is very much how it’s beginning to feel! Hopefully, your sparring with JLR will pay dividends, but if owners are to come out on top, we need to find that knockout punch. Until then, it will feel like we’re being played, because we are! Keep pushing, and thanks again for picking up the cudgels on what is now becoming very serious for many many folk👏

Yes, please push and put pressure on JLR. You’re correct to expect more than hollow words with no measurable outcomes. What’s staggering here is you’re doing JLR a favour by communicating, because their business model and brand loyalty is collapsing and fast. Thanks and keep up the great work for all of us owners.

When I retired in 2020, I Bought a brand new 2020 HSE Dynamic speced from the factory from Pentland Stirling and haven’t had any issues in 4yrs. I’ve just jumped and bought a BMW X3M40d and you may ask why ? Don’t get me wrong - love the motor ( looks /performance ) but a cumulative range of issues has made me jump. ( massive depreciation/ quadruple insurance premiums ) and no sign of JLR willing to do anything about it. I’m just coming to the end of a 4 yr pcp and to own the vehicle outright is £36k ( balloon payment )which was always my intention but with valuations plummeting ( £2k /month reduction ) insurance premiums quadruple and potential major mechanical issues, I decided to cut my losses and go BMW. Voluntary Termination on my finance contract exercised and vehicle collected on Thursday away to the Auction. 😢

Hi Richard, I have been a Range Rover owner since 1998. I have bought three Range Rovers since then. Recently I had my car Serviced at my local Lookers Land Rover. I spoke with the service manager who has been with the company for over 30 years. He told me privately that in all his time with the company he has never seen so many Range Rovers in the show room as they can not sell them. It is so bad that customers are coming in to get there deposits back because they can't get insurance. I personally have insurance until June 2024 and after that i think it will be bye bye Land Rover unless some miracle happens. Last but not least I have video footage of two guys trying to steal my Range Rover with the scanners and the only thing that stopped them was my keys in the pouch. Keep up the good work and look forward to your next update thanks Gerry Grehan.

Hi Richard, thanks again for all you are doing. What confuses me is that I have a 23MY (latest version) Range Rover with the latest JLR security. I took delivery in November 22 and at renewal in November 23 my insurance went up from £780 to £2300. Land Rover insurance refused refused to quote. This is for a car in rural Oxfordshire not London. The issue isn't just with earlier models. I just don't get what is going on.

As always Richard, another great and informative video. I am now beginning to worry about my forthcoming renewal even though it is not until August 24. JLR seem to be as tough skinned as the Post Office in answering questions or moving solutions forward and insurance underwriters are putting up a blanket refusal or charging the earth no matter where you live in the country. We are, to a man, behind you, and wish you all the very best on the fight with JLR on behalf of all us unseen customers. A sincere thank you.

Bless u Richard for taking this on, following with great interest , had Land Rover for 30 x years , my current one being a discovery 3 , even my renewal increased from £500 to £1300 , rang company and was advised because of the keyless entry thefts premiums have increased , along with part shortages so many require to have a loaned car for longer periods , managed to shop aroumd and get mine for £450 with Hastings’s, belong to several Land Rover forums and seems many models are getting tared with the same brush in ever increasing premiums , indeed feel Land Rover have a lot to answer for , particularly seeing they’ve created the issue of not making their keyless entry vehicles secure , shameful that a 100k FFRR can be nicked in 60 x seconds , thks again for all ur hard work and following ur channel with interest , hope it was also ok to share ur video on the 3 x Land Rover forums I belong in order to get more coverage , all the best and very grateful to u , Gary

Surely JLR can come up with a simple solution to reduce insurance premiums, reduce the massive cost of upgrading their software and to stabilise second hand values? Something like get the customer to pay £500 for a Ghost 2 to be fitted, get a certificate from the installer showing Make/Model/VIN etc, customer to upload a copy of certificate to JLR insurance, premium is then massively reduced. A win for JLR not having to pay out for the Ghost 2 and a win for the customer because a lower premium could easily pay for the Ghost 2 system. The first insurance company to do the same surely would be on to a winner?

Hi Richard, I have been writing to you and thanking you for the good work that you are trying to do for us RR owners, I am currently insured with the RAC, and on my enquiry they informed that, having a Ghost 2 fitted, a steering lock fitted, the remote key switched off, and tracker fitted, will make absolutely NO difference to the insurance premium I will have to pay. So I might have a slightly better piece of mind, but financially it has NO advantage.

Thank you for all your efforts so far and keep up the pressure. However, my L405 has fallen so much in trade in value I’ve decided it’s not worth trading in so, tomorrow I’m buying a new Porsche. I’ll keep the L405, untaxed and uninsured on my drive (it doesn’t fit the garage) and just wait to see what happens. It’s a pity because I’ve had Range Rovers (more than 8 so far) since the very first ones back in the 1970’s. Each time I have left the brand I’ve always come back but perhaps not this time. Excellent work again. Out of interest the company I work for has a fairly sizeable fleet of 22 and 23 plate RR and defenders (commercial) combined with a fleet of specialised forestry harvesting kit As part of this scheme it is the leasing company who provides the all risk business insurance for the fleet (bulk policy via Lloyd's) all in with the monthly fees. The leasing company have recently advised that they are doing an unplanned early termination of the JLR fleet , and on an interim basis they are providing a range of platforms including Toyota, Grenadier and variety utility pickups. We are also seeing locally the commercial auction are experiencing low or zero bids on the JLR products and on the road we are seeing them moving on a daily basis transporters loaded up with JLR products and moving them on a southern direction.

Hi Richard... Great work thankyou. I have a 2014 ffrr autobiography... loads of extra ... 107 k car when new... over maintain it everything works as is should... love it... had it three years... full no claims.. retired turned off auto unlock... cannot get JLR insurance...my insurance had gone from £530 upto £1900 within three years... would really like to now purchase a newer model 2021.. but concerned over falling values and ever increasing premiums year on year. Was going to get a private reg... but decided against it... thought showing its old might deter thieves from bothering. Anyway sadly need to move the car on and take the loss won't be purchasing another JLR product... One of my friends has ffrr 2015.... another rr sport 2015... Both looking to sell.... both not purchasing JLR. If JLR don't do something soon they will kill off the brand loyalty and customer base... how can they allow a situation where customers in London are refused insurance... yet its probably there biggest customer base... simply ridiculous business accumen.

I would imagine “JLR Insurance” is just a broker frontage like all the others, Admiral,Swinton etc. and so are just the people who take the first slice of your money. The underwriter, be it Lloyds of London or whoever are probably dictating the premiums and assessing the risk i.e. which cars they will (or won’t) cover. So I don’t think “JLR insurance” will have much say in the matter or be able to remedy it themselves.

The massive real issue behind all of this is that you can make cars as secure as you like but you still have get in & out of them so liable to car jacking & people will still break into properties to get keys to take cars..along with holding people to ransome where additional security is fitted....admittedly there will be fewer criminals prepared to take this step but be under no illusion there are plenty who will & are doing this already. The vehicles are desirable, worth money as a whole or in bits & the Police are unable to actually deal with the issue. Even if they do the implications for people caught & prosecuted is negligible. This is a major industry wide issue & is beyond just LR as it will rapidly be which ever other brands people switch to.

JLR are definitely dragging their feet on this whole situation and with the soundbite responses their marketing people have given so far to questions they do not deserve their loyal customer base. And even if JLR do sort out the insurance situation, it won't help the people that have already been denied a quote (like me), those that have not been affected by theft (so far), yet have had to pay over double for insurance this year. Keep at it Richard. I so really want to just sell up now and move away but depreciation and the lack of people and dealers wanting to buy these things is making things very tough to do that. I can’t see things getting any better for LR either and have no sympathy them as they could have done things so much better. Not content with being known for terrible reliability and not so good dealers, now it’s un-insurable cars, huge waits on parts and massive depreciation on top. I can’t think of any other brand that’s had this perfect sh*tstorm before and they still don’t seem that bothered.

Unfortunately the only time these big manufacturers stand up and do something is when you hit their revenue and sales targets. I was in the market for a new a Range Rover and like the product, but given the companies obvious, it’s a PR issue we must manage attitude, I have withdrawn from that opportunity for them. I will not buy a product of any description a manufacturer is not willing to support with confidence, this issue can easily be rectified and only needs a technical uplift solution, it is much cheaper than spending 50k on PR media teams timesheets. It’s time for JLR to show some real transparency with a solution to mitigate that works with insurance companies. Right now I would caution anyone against any JLR Jaguar Tata product. Cross platform sharing is a well known fact, don’t assume Jaguars are any safer.

Hi Ricard, I have owed range rovers since p38 days and have been local to the brand. I currently have A Range Rover sport he’s 2015, car was in for for new brakes on the 4th Jan at Syter Land Rover Coventry a dealership I have dealt with for over 20years. Ask about security update and was greeting with a smug face and told we doubt have the software the model it’s to old. Regarding insurance I had a three year fixed price which was due to go into the third year from 31st January, but Saga have cancelled the insurance saying nobody will underwrite the policy. I have tried Land Rover insurance and guess what it said we can’t insure that vehicle. I have looked around at alternative quote’s the cheapest I can get is £1800 an increase from what I was paying of £1300 and a car depreciating daily with no resale value. Land Rover needs to take note. Keep up the good work let’s hope people power can help sort all this out. LAND ROVER YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED AT WHAT IS HAPPENING.

Having previously owned a Landrover I am looking at getting another but like you mentioned in your video people will vote with their feet and I am now staying clear of this brand. The cost of living is high enough. Insurance is a legal requirement and sadly there has to be some give. Interestingly I also watched an auction video earlier tonight and literally out of the 300 cars there I would say maybe 50 of these were Landrovers with about 30 to 40 percent of these being insurance recovery related. Sorry Landrover you have lost me as a future customer.

Hi Richard, keep up the good fight, right behind you. Honestly JLR what are you thinking? We need sensible insurance. Picking up my kids at boarding school over half the parents have RR and these people simply run everything from law, business, accounting, government, you do not want to lose their loyalty. I’m happy to pay for a ghost system, but if it doesn’t make any difference on insurance or even makes it worse what’s the point? My own experience of top management of insurance is legless by lunchtime! Surely they could work out a plan to an agreed security level and get the premiums coming down. My 2023 Range Rover hybrid HSE is a fantastic car, beautiful to drive, the best car so far from JLR. Will I get insurance in March on its first renewal? My old autobiography RR 2018 was £800 to insure, March 2023 my new model was £2400 after a year of paranoia of leaving it parked for a hour or two on a public road , never leaving it at the airport like all my past RR , will I even get a quote in London? I think the issue with the autowatch ghost 2 is that it is not an approved thatcham connecting into the loom which may give them unease in terms of risk of fire and other damage. It would be great to get an insurer or ABI involved though.

I can see a class action in the future. If JLR have sold a product, which by their own admission requires the security updated, and they fail to recall vehicles to have the security updated, some solicitors will set up a class action. Similar to the Post Office, if it can be proven JLR have known about the problem but have continued to sell it products without informing the customer, then the product will have been miss sold. This could also relate to the finance company’s associated with the car sales.

The whole insurance industry is messed up and needs an overhaul. Our car was involved in a non fault accident where someone failed to give way and damaged both doors on drivers side. Got written off as Cat N. We bought it back , I got 2 doors in colour from a breaker car, job done and car completely fixed again. My insurance however went up and the reason for that was “Your car as Cat N is now in a higher risk group. Because if a vehicle has been involved in accident in past, it’s more likely to be involved in another one.” Paid £800 last year and this years price is £1900. 40y old with clean license for 21 years. And that’s for a 10 y old Volvo worth £6k max. If you’re paying £2.5 k for a P1 then the insurance industry has definately lost the plot. Maybe I should get a supercar instead?

As a Land Rover dealer, predominately just Range Rovers, my trade insurance is due next week and can’t get cover on the existing stock. As you may know, we had one stolen last month. The problem is, it’s not just the keyless entry issue. They started mine with the keyless entry switched off by using the diagnostic port in the foot well. They did the same to my neighbour three days later. We switch all of the keyless entry systems off as soon as a vehicle arrives into stock. Does everyone know how to do this? It’s very simple and takes about 30 seconds. Very important you do this, but it is not full proof as if your car is open they can still take it very easily, or just break the window. Feel free to get in touch for information. Regards, Callum Bexley car sales, Dartford, Kent.

Only 14 tesla model 3's have been stolen in the UK since 2019 - yet insurance has also doubled for most owners. I think the key problem is that insurance companies invest premiums on the stock market and this has been tanking lately. Also, cost of repairs has grown enormously. So it's not just JLR - it is a whole industry problem.

Good evening . I do not think people appreciate the real insurance situation. My opinion is the insurance premiums are still climbing astronomical for JLR vehicles because whilst security is being updated on JLR vehicles from 2018 onwards, the insurance companies are actively clawing back insurance loss payouts for cars already stolen. I think insurance will normalise in 3 years time once losses are paid out, a form of tax on the public.

  • @tomegton

You need to consider the fact that this is a UK only problem. JLR have a world wide waiting list for new cars so why should they be bothered about the fact that it is a UK only social behavior problem. The police have never really been interested in stolen cars in this country, they see it as "well your insured are you not" and pass the buck. It is the society we now live in , lots of young men who do not ,or cannot, do a proper job and are brought up to steal for a living. It seems odd to me that no one has said to JLR "WHY"do you make a £100,000 pound car so easy to steal!

Im hardly a great risk pensioner -67 yrs old 10 yrs ncb and no points or accidents. Insurance co’s take the piss in the uk. For instance I have a car in Europe - a ford c-max - full comp, any driver over 25, 10,000 kms pa --- 98euros full premium !!. Because of the insurance JLR has lost my son as a loyal customer already, his insurance went from £900 to £3000 on a 2018 Evoque HSE. Went to trade it in and had to take a top up loan of £7000 to clear the finance on it because of the depreciation. Purchased a brand new BMW 145 (300 bhp) - insurance £800! I have a 2016 Jaguar XE diesel and a 2013 Discovery. The finance on the Jaguar will be finished in June, the likelihood is that the Jag will be traded in then. This is because JLR don’t give a damn about existing owners and their resale values. Between the Ingenium diesel timing chain issues and now thefts and insurance, I can only come to the conclusion that JLR really don’t care. This will be the case until the vehicles become unsaleable due to a lack of residual value. The bit they’re not getting is it is more difficult to win customers back once they feel shit upon.

Remember JLR is Tata owned. They ain’t big on security in India. The fact insurance companies either won’t insure or have sky high prices is basically an admission of this fact. JLR are not a premium car maker at all. Yes their vehicles cost a fortune but the reality is like German car buyers, all you really need getting is a badge and, I’m old enough to remember the original Range Rover and the current vehicles are so far away from them the badge shouldn’t be the same. As for adding security and locking wheel nuts the insurance company is correct. Any car that is modified from factory standard will incur a higher premium unless, locking nuts etc, were valuable as an option from new and you used genuine parts. It’s not up to JLR to help owners at all, like Corsa and Fiesta owners, learn to accept they get nicked by the thousand and choose a better car. Unless you off road and who will do that at £70,000 plus don’t buy a 4x4. Try something like a Renault Austral at around £45000 for top spec, 4 wheel steering and more toys than Range Rover have that are actually useful. JLR don’t care about owners and never have since the breakup off Rover etc. They make cars because the owners see them as status symbols and nothing more. Tata know when people are daft enough to buy an inferior car the government will keep handing them massive grants, that’s what they are interested in. Don’t forget they own the UK steel industry and would close it down tomorrow but for the fact the amount of money they get from government makes it basically a nationalised industry but without the country seeing the benefits. The L322 was the last decent Range Rover with the right mix of of road ability and normal road use.

Hi Richard, well done on at least getting a response from JLR. The reason that there is a cut off and no plans to update pre 2018 vehicles is the statute of limitations in the Sale of Goods Act. Basically, after 6 years, a claim cannot be made in respect of faulty goods. I am quite certain about this because last year the engine in my 2015 RR sport failed after DPF issues that were not flagged due to a software fault. JLR refused to pay anything towards the £17k bill despite the car having had the latent problem since I bought it new. In the meantime JLR can’t say whether or not my wife’s 2021 F Pace is in need of a security update. I would expect to be out of business very quickly if I treated customers like JLR do.. Richard keep up the good work although I do feel being passed down to a Public Relations Rep is somewhat fobbing you off. It is time Land Rover recognised the seriousness of the situation and took some more decisive action instead of the currant Sh-t Show that we have. In my view Land Rover should immediatly advise all users to turn off the keyless feature. (until they have a security update that works. Also this security update should be extended to all cars that have the keyless feature irrespective of year. Landrover should also offer In Control Tracking for free or at a small nominal fee to every owner until their car has updated security embodied. JLR insurance should be offered on all vehicles at a price not more than 20% above the owners last quote, unless impacted by criminal offence/accident claim in the prevoius 12 months. (not just some vehicles as being reported) I am absolutely flabbergasted at the for the most part "not our problem attitude" taken by Land Rover, it is so far a Customer/PR/Insurance and marketing disaster on an epic scale. Unless Land Rover management give the situation the priority it deserves I can see 99% of owners leaving the brand and the company going bust. I am on my 4th Land Rover now, but unless all these issues are address I can't see my next vehicle as a Land Rover.
