Now I want to buy a MGZR again! I had 3 before, all had so many problems but so much fun. Had 5 different cars with K Series engines, great engine, poor head gaskets but I only had 2 failures over 5 cars.

This "highly successful" engine that nearly bankrupted Rover due to all the warranty claims lol, shame they never manage/bothered to address the head gasket problems while it was still in production, because it definitely didn't help their already poor reputation for reliability.

it didn't though did it? the engine didn't have excess warranty claims, the problems started after BMW took over and they tried to cheapen many of the components the K series from 1989 to 1998 was very good

@@thedeadstig123 absolute rubbish the main problems started when rover chose to cast the block in-house and changed to the Damp liner block to get increase to 1.6-1.8 and done nothing to sort the headgasket they already knew was no good or preposition the thermostat that was in the incorrect position

Great engine once the head's been done but I don't know why they didn't use the T series instead of the K series

Because not everyone wanted a 2.0 Turbo motor to toddle about.... even though the freelander is a very good compact 4X4 it would have never needed (With much of the UK's terrain) to have a 2.0 Turbo motor... if you needed anything better you'd get a Defender or a Discovery.

@@AliMackMechanical Unfortunately, the T series was a very tall engine, which didn’t fit in a lot of models without messing up the weight distribution or changing the scuttle height. It was also an incredibly difficult engine to comply with emissions regs. It was basically impossible to get it past Euro 2 class, the engine design was just too outdated and was already catalysed with a closed loop, so no matter what was tried, the emissions were only just compliant, and right on the edge of being OTT. Loved working on the T, it was a solid engine but very old hat.

Best thing they done. Gave the freelander such a bad name due to head gasket failure!! Shame if they stuck to td4 then I reckon would of sold so many more.

Seems a good engine for a light weight sports car not freelander this engine give them a bad name as its too heavy for this type of engine. That's why it's had success in the mgf, small rover cars and also the lotus Elise. All light weight cars.
