This shows how I managed to open the tailgate on and LR4 from INSIDE THE CAR when the latch release mechanism failed.

Thanks a ton for making this video. Your solution worked great. Manufacturing the bar was a genius move ... especially helpful when you showed how to use it. It allowed me to quickly open the hatch. But oh man, getting the carpet from under the trim is a huge pain -- definitely the worst part of the job.

Just bought a discovery 4, I was advised the tailgate was broken before purchase, I am quite capable of fixing it myself, but its nice to watch your video before I start snapping trim 🙂 great informative video, thanks for taking the time.

Both Thank You to you, Simon, for posting a comprehensive video showing all the steps. My tailgate stopped working yesterday, now I have the instruction manual to guide my weekend ! :)

Many thanks. You are a man amongst men. We just used your wonderful video to fix the tailgate on my son's LR4. Happily for us, we managed to get the tailgate open using WD40 etc up into the lock mechanism. Whether that helped or not we are not sure. Regardless, when the tailgate opened (magically) we knew we had to leave it open and strip the door down to start our repair. The solenoid motor was faulty in our case but we replaced the lock mechanism as well. Thanks again.

Hey Simon, thanks for your video I had the same problem on my 2013 D4 and followed your steps and managed to fix it and get everything back together without any issues!. Took me a couple of hours in the end. The part numbers are, the actuator is FUG500010 and the latch is LR017470. There is another part EOT500013 which is the replacement Moisture shield you have to cut through to acess the cable actuator. I couldn't find that part anywhere so once I was done I just taped it with high temp duct tape you use on Air Con or range hood ducting which should do the job. Hardest part was removing the trim at the begin but was realtively straightforward after that. Thanks again

Thanks for your help. My tailgate did open, eventually, it was the actuator that had failed. This video really helped me. Cheers Mate

Followed your process today and used the scraper technique which worked a treat. The only difference was I had to hook the cable out of the top of the black casing and pull it instead of using the bar as it had snapped inside the casing. Cheers for the video mate.

Thanks Simon, I made exactly the same tool to your design from an old paint scraper, worked a treat. I had the inside cover off in 20 mins. Getting the cable to release took a bit longer. I even made a similar tool for that too but it just takes persistence. Thanks to all the tips.

Thank you for the video sir, just to simplify things, if your actuator makes noise but would not open, try to use scanner, and in BDM (body control module) erase actuator code, and try to open the gate. In my case it was dying out of 30 button actuations it would open once, so it gave up one day. Instead of removing trim and carpet i erased the code and gate opened!

Great video. Others recommend drilling great big holes in the carpet, so this is a much better and less destructive technique. Having seen this happen a few times on other peoples cars, I wasn't going to take the chance of having to do all this so I have used an old bicycle brake cable piggyback attached to the release cable at the actuator (near where the spring is) with 1-1.5mm wire rope clips and fed it up to the top trim of the tailgate where the end loop just tucks under the trim. Invisible until you need it and doesn't affect normal use. Just fish it out and pull gently to release the tailgate. Oh, and the warning on the trim clips is worth heeding; the little sods fly off in all directions! Buy M4 spire clips from Amazon if you need replacements (as you can guess, I did🥵).

@@simonbenton5635 I can't take the credit as it's an adaptation of an idea I've seen elsewhere (although I can't remember where). I had thought about using a handle from a sofa recliner, cut into the carpet trim, to operate the cable, or even an emergency garage door release key lock (for some security), but in the end I just added a blob of Polymorph to the cable end to allow some grip and tucked it under the trim.

I have this problem. I could hear the Lock unbolt, and it did. But was stuck in the ajar position. Might be different to this video... I opened it by holding the back latch button while activating the boor release on the remote. Its not fixed but i can open it until i work out the proper fix
