Land Rover Camper × My "Home on Wheels" Discovery 2

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Finally put a video together going thru the 1st prototype custom interior-camper sleeping-setup I've built. (Apologies for shakey cam near end!) === LOTS OF INFO: === Next version I make will be made of aluminum sheet instead of wood, to save weight. ~ But this version's built with marine plywood, deck screws, marine wood glue, penetrating epoxy, southco latches, stainless piano hinges, gas shocks, marine carpet & glue, & all trimmed with paracord. ~ Weighs in about 30lbs more than everything I removed from it, but more so with all the added gear. ~ I've used it extensively for an entire season now of camping & off roading. ~ Slept out of it for a week straight while wandering Michigan trails, just find a spot in public forest & setup in minutes! It's really badass having the self sufficiency, speed, & ease of camp setup/teardown by having it built in vs to a roof top tent (not to mention cheaper!). ~ Only complaint so far would be overall weight when loaded down with 3+ days worth of gear & supplies, but I have a plan for that. ~ Another big step will be adding auxiliary diesel/water/propane tanks under the chassis to extend my overall range. ~ Also I'm designing a house-battery & solar-charging system to give me more capability when I'm way off-grid.

    Great video. This is fantastic, I have been trawling the internet for months to find info on converting a d2 into a camper. You have given me 10 times the material that I have already found in less than 8 minutes 👍. Your conversion is very similar to what I had in mind .... superb.. and thanks for sharing your great work. this was a great build! i just totally rebuilt my brakes today on my 2000 disco 2. all new master cylinder, lines, rotors, calipers and pads. used the Hawkeye tool to bleed the brakes...worked great. we have also previously replaced the coils...(a bitch to do), valve cover gaskets, manifold gasket, throttle heater gasket, all o2 sensors, wires, plugs, many hoses and clamps, ac pump, alternator, water pump...etc as you can tell, i love her. she is my 4th disco 2.

    This is brilliant, I guess you could sleep two at a squeeze or have reduced the depth of the side unit an inch or two but so what... great system . If you did this in the UK you would probably get it re registered as a commercial vehicle seeing as the back seats would be regarded as permanently out of use and save a packet on the road tax per year. Dare I suggest carpet tiles next version, they are very easy cut to any shape and would have a much neater non fraying edge . The window black-outs are perfect too. If you were to add a power inverter to the kit you would could do the hoovering and washing with a 110v supply from the slave/leisure battery although the engine would need running. I love this sort of self styled inventive project stuff . 👏👏👏👏👏

  • @Tinker1837

    @Tinker1837

    6 жыл бұрын

    S Who Thanks! Yeah it would be a pretty intimate fit for two. Those carpet edges were a tricky bit for sure, would've been heaps easier if the backer wasn't so dark. I'm planning to wire it up with solar above & a "house battery" inside so I can start expanding it's functionality :)

    I imagine you have found this guys vid already .. kzread.info/dash/bejne/g3psurF6cdO6k7w.html but the flexible ones are more efficient and don't need "aiming" so much . A friend has a cousin that is one of the David Attenborough wildlife video team and he uses "roll up" panels and slaps them all over the bonnet/hood of every vehicle they use . I'll keep an eye out to see how you get on, subed ! Oh and that Mexican carpet gets everywhere after a while ..... underlay underlay arriba arriba ;) Maybe a manufacturer would sponsor you in return for a few vid shorts of how you use them etc. Nice going..Good luck mate .

    Is the D1 four-door shorter? ...or you are referring to the two-door, never actually seen one in the wild here!

  • @jeremyjohnson6438

    The rear overhang is much shorter on the D1. Less space, but the rear doesn't drag when off roading. I had a D2 and would scrap on the tow hitch climbing hills.

    Great job on the fit out mate. Very professional. My own approach is vastly different, and it seems I take to many short cuts. Thinking about it now I would say the time I save in a quick fit out is soon lost as I spend more time trying to find items. Cheers

    AuSeeker Thanks! And there sure are a bunch of ways you could go about fitting out one of these, no shortage of space inside considering the wheelbase. I just hope I can manage to keep it this organized once the new running gear is chugging along & I venture out on week+ trips haha

    So I take it you sleep in a roof top like myself and live from the back of the rig, I use an awning that sleeps 3 that attaches by zipper under the canopy of the tent and have the rear of the disco a platform for living from. I really appreciate the time you would of spent designing this system and I love the finished build, if your ever headed north bound and into Scotland, buzz me and I will give you some inside info on routes to take man, All the best

    I'm actually sleeping right out of the back, on the folding bed section. Roof's mostly for expanding cargo & fuel range, also for solar panels in the future. I haven't shown much of me sleeping in back because my very cheap cameras are terrible in lowlight. You can see some of it in my sand dunes video here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lmGisc1uda2bgrA.htmlm42s Getting out that way would be a dream for sure, good looking out!

    Tinker cool man! I am currently going through you uploads as I've only just found you channel, it's great know that your sleeping in the vehicle, most people I know who have converted their Discos into campers sleep on the roof, if I didn't have such a large family that is what I would be doing, no need to step out of the vehicle when Scotland sky's open up 🌧

    Yeah the roof + awning/canopy is a fantastic combo! I love how that style is so expandable & turns into a "basecamp" so readily. With my setup you'd definitely want to be comfortable with any other person that will be in the back with you... not the largest back there so it makes for very intimate sleeping quarters haha! Sometimes the peninsulas of Michigan here can feel like an island with all the precipitation/cloudcover/fog. Beautiful when you go all the way to our northern stretches, the Keweenaw, but still can hardly compare to your northern areas

    Tinker Awsome that sounds majestic I would love to hop the Atlantic and do some ovelanding, When you wake and look at your feet in the morning in the back of a disco you look up and see the best picture frame ever, that's the back window of a land rover 😉 Glad I found your channel, I'm more active on Instgram and the channel name is littlebullszinsta Take care my friend, looking forward to more of your uploads
