"None of the secondary cast gets developed" -dia realizes that they can stop relying on bort for everything and that since they're at about the same strength, they can do basically everything bort can -bort realizes that just because they're the top gem, their peers are also integral to society and they must help them to succeed -rutile realizes the futility of trying to reform their friend padparascha -antarcticite goes from being a default socially awkward loner to taking on an apprentice who ends up succeeding them -cinna also goes from being a loner to opening up when they realize the kindness phos shows them despite cinna pushing them away -sensei/adamantite goes from being calm, collected, and authoritative to nervous about the bones finding out his secret -even King goes from manipulative traitor to regretful friend Just because they don't have as big of a physical/personality difference, doesn't mean no one is developed. For only having 12 episodes in a first season of a series that's set up to be medium length, yet also having a huge cast, almost every character of Houseki no Kuni develops in some way.

I disagree with most of these points. You can't tout changes that were introduced and concluded in the same episode. Or one to two episodes. And I would also like to state, yes, a large difference in personality isn't the only indicator of development. But Phos's change to me, was too rapid and stark. I would have been way more impressed by her actions and internal conflicts changing more naturally. But they essentially wrote a completely different character to accommodate new experiences and new internal dilemmas. So if you ask me, the series got character development wrong all around. I really wanted to like this show but Phos' "metamorphosis" per say, just felt so cheaply done.... It almost felt like the writers changed or something, and the pace also completely changed after Antarcticite. I don't want to take the enjoyment from anyone. I just wish Orange baked the ending and characters for longer.

@@Complicasiian I respect your opinion here, and I do agree Phos's change in character is rather quick, but there is several reasons Phos changed so fast. The first reason and the most important reason is that Phos realized she couldn't do anything to save Antarcticite if she didn't try. So Phos tried and eventually gained control of her new arms, but as we know she failed. That left her scarred, knowing that she could've saved Antarcticite if she gained control of her arms faster. Another reason she changed so quickly is because she lost at least 1/3 of her memory which probably made her more prone to change. Also I would to agree with the main comment here, just cause it happened in one episode doesn't mean it wasn't change. P.S The only writer for this story is the person who wrote the manga. This is just where the story is going. If you don't like that's fine, you've got your own taste. P.S.S The comment we're replying to is 1 year old. So we're kinda late.

It left off at a cliffhanger because even though the anime is done for now, the manga is ongoing and oh my goodness it is wonderful. Questions are answered and the manga has a lot of buddhist symbolism. Phos changes even more, to the point where you can't even call them phosphilite anymore. The reason why the other gems don't change is because their physical forms don't change. Phos body has combined with many different substances, thus the change in their personality and outlook on life. I highly reccomend you read the manga because it really is amazing.

The fact that Phos is the only one who grows was not a bug,bit was a feature. Because, rocks don't grow, they stay unchanged. Gems can be pretty, thoughts of them being perfect, kind of makes them miss a spark and fail to become more than they were. Such as no concept of death. It takes Phos literally being torn apart, things taken away and others added, for who to grow into what she was at the end. She then starts to see that something is not right, that all the unchanging gems just ignored. I do think the show did something about the importance of failure in growth, and you cannot just give up. But also the danger of trying to do for something that might not actually be worth how amazing you thought at the start.

I disagree with some of the criticism made. [this comment is long but contains no spoilers] Phos being the only one to change/develop is kind of the PURPOSE of the show. Phos is asking questions. She is looking for answers and confronting the reality of her world even when the truth is ugly, while the other gems want to turn away from the truth. It is alluded that they know more than they are letting on, but pretending they don't notice anything wrong because they don't want to accept or acknowledge what might really be going on. Also, the world building it slow, but when you begin o fully realize the truth of the world, IT IS GROUNDBREAKING. The story is so incredibly unique, and because we are discovering the world along with Phos, it makes her character even more relatable because her reactions match the awe, shock, and betrayal felt by the viewers. Phos's character arc is stunning, and heartbreaking, as you watch her try to get stronger for the people she cares about but at the price of losing herself and who she is as a person. In a lot of ways, her story by the end just felt so bittersweet and tragic. Of course, I agree it absolutely needs a sequel, but what we already got from season 1 was an incredibly unique world and story, a lot of twists and unexpected turns, AN OUTSTANDING OST TRACK, and the best character development arc that I have seen in a very long time. Unlike the pile of seasonal anime we always get, this show, at least to me, was genuinely unforgettable.

At first, this was show that had an intriguing premise and a bunch of people recommending it. Next, it was a show with amazing 3d animation and excellent pacing. Finally, it was a show that really resonated with me far more than any other show last year. I loved Made in Abyss, Konosuba 2, My Hero Academia, and Ancient Magus Bride, but since it aired I've re-watched Land of the Lustrous twice when there are very few anime I've ever re-watched at all. I could probably call Made in Abyss a better show, but this was undoubtedly my favorite from last year.

Android 19 yet to watch/read made in abyss, but i feel the same, there are other anime and manga i'd consider "better" than houseki(i am a hero, the climber, a silent voice, mob psycho 100, etc) but houseki just ticks off all the right things for me to love it immensely, it's just everything that i like with nothing else, but turned to 11, so it might not be the best thing ever objectively, but it's without a doubt my favorite series ever.so beautiful both manga anime yet so different, both are also unique in their own regard, the world, the setting, the characters... It's all so beautiful and well crafted, nothing is put in for no reason yet everything feels like it exists just to be there to make the world feel alive(and damn if it does even if there's only about 20 characters in the anime) but everything gas a purpose in it's creation and use(, the jokes, the extra bits(e.g. the shiro plushies or (manga spoiler) "record of an everyday war") it feels like filler, but it all makes sense in the grand scheme of things, and obviously the best part, the characters; i'm just going to say this, aggretsuko is supposed to be "#relatable : the anime", ut i couldn't ever relate to that, yet here... I can easily say that if someone knows how to make phos an happier and better person, i'd take that advice for myself, because how damn much much i relate to the characters (especially phos, never seen someone so similar to me, maybe even irl) in houseki.

Phos has been one of the best characters I've seen in that season, first being annoying yet lost, to finding a place yet feeling empty. Her relatable bittersweet development makes sense and feels relatable as we find out the world we live in isn't ideal and sometimes things that we take for granted are lost.

It probably wouldn't have been as good, even if the ending would've felt more natural.

Important production note, the show is not literally 100% handled in CG! Many relatively still character and background shots have 2d composited in very subtly to provide the natural illustrative shortcuts that come when you can just draw the frame. It is really funny how inverted this process is in both creation and results as opposed to lets say Arkada's favorite Fate dragon

Land of the Lustrous has themes tied to growth and harsh reality checks. Steven Universe has similar themes, but keeps to the shallow, superficial means of tackling those themes. Basically dumbing it down for the audience. I don't care for SU for the reason that people think those superficial methods are the reinvention of the wheel.

This and Made in Abyss were my favorite anime in 2017, both of them took me by surprise. I felt reluctant at first since it was CGI, but the characters were cute and I liked the general plot so I decided to continue watching. I loved seeing Phos's character change in the anime, both mentally and physically. All the other characters were interesting to watch as well, not to mention how well directed each episode was. It ended up becoming a real treat to watch. Now I'm just hoping this gets a season 2 like Made in Abyss.

Houseki No Kuni has a lot of meaning. As Phos changed parts, his personality changes. One of the change allowed him to understand human's feeling. I forgot the others. Another one is the meaning, Kintsugi is an art for fixing things with gold. The meaning of it is to fix imperfection.

The art in this show is so good it makes 2D animation look bad. The expansive fluid facial expressions and body language bring the characters to life in a way I've never seen before. Also anyone watching this who is thinking of watching it I recommend watching as little of this video as possible because it has huge spoilers and so do the comments in here. Take my advice and don't cheat yourself of one best anime experiences by finding out what happens before you watch it. Having the mystery of the world unfold before you as characters develop is the best part.

Houseki no Kuni is basically the first anime to answer the question: Can CG match, much less exceed hand drawn animation with a resounding yes. Not just an emphatic yes or yes with a lot of *** and caveats but a straight up "This show was made better thanks to CG." I'd honestly recommend this anime just on the visuals and use of CG. The gems, their luminosity and movement couldn't reasonably be done hand drawn. As far as the ending goes . . . I forgive the show and give it a pass. They clearly didn't want a anime only unique ending. And I think it ends at the right point where Phos' first major character arc wraps up and before the meat of the plot and major other characters show up. They basically made the most of the awkward spot they had to end on: offering some closure while not disrupting the wider narrative.

The rest of the manga goes full NieR on our asses after Chapter 53 and kicks the plot into high gear, further developing themes of existentialism that create an overwhelmingly compelling narrative that kept me on the edge of my seat for how the plot and characters would continue to develop and resolve. I also found myself comparing it to Code Geass in some regards. What the manga has in store is sure to make for a spectacle of an adaption if they ever get around to a second season of the anime.

A review for this review: It's... kinda disappointing... Sorry for the extensive tear-down, I'm sure you're thinking "well why don't you make a video then". Because, that's not what I'm good at. I hope you'll read this with an open mind for how to improve, not as a scathing condemnation. Full disclosure: I'm a long time manga reader, but that isn't the root of my criticism. This feels like a review that you didn't put a lot of time into, which is sad because I've heard you express your thoughts more eloquently about this show before. First completely dropping the thesis of the video ( a beautiful cg anime) to go on a tangent about the narrative. I would have first emphasized the cinematic and visual strengths, then led into the story with "but there is more to this gem than its outward beauty" or something like that, then finish out with where it succeeds and other cg shows fail. The personalities, it's more that their inherent features lead to the characters various complexes and desires to change what is unchangeable within them, not merely deriving a personality from the gems, a subtle but important difference. The characters themselves are all actually very nuanced and face their own unique struggles with worth. Part of the thematic struggle is that Phos *is* the only character truly capable of change, because they are the only one that lets go of pieces of themselves (though not by choice). Also completely ignoring the complex relationships built up over thousands of years (I could write a thesis paper about Dia and Bort's relationship). The director also spoke at length in several interviews about how he approached this series. You'll also note the show is not "fully cg" in fact much of its beauty comes from the inventive hybrid of traditional and CG animation techniques. As well as Its wonderful use of color, framing, subtle character acting etc... You should've contrasted the mangas art, because its beauty is almost completely inverse to the anime. Derived from striking black and white contrast. And no mention of the *excellent* ost? There is so much to say about this show from an aesthetic perspective. Kongou is *thousands* of years old, and his name is reference to a fictional gem from Japanese mythology. Japanese, Hindu and buddhist philosophy are heavily at play in the series. The Steven universe bit could have been funnier if made more brief and tongue in cheek, the execution here feels self indulgent for the joke (should also note that the manga is older than SU). I would have featured the manga cover when you mention the mangaka at the beginning, and again when plugging bookwalker. When mentioning how the manga designs are more androgynous you should show examples to demonstrate Finally while I can't blame you for how you feel about the ending, I much prefer the manga accurate retelling (barring some details) as opposed to trying to force an open ended tale into a conclusive narrative, because in many ways, this is just the prologue of Phos's story. Tl;dr: The review feels like it was rushed for a deadline because you didn't know what other show to write about. Poorly constructed, and in need of another editorial pass, or two. I'm glad you are bringing more attention to the show, as a fan of the series nothing makes me happier than to see people enjoy it. But I also want to see people do the series justice.

The one thing I find wrong with his opinion with the anime season ending is that, the season ended with a cliffhanger, because the studio could only work with the first 3 volumes, the others weren't made when Houseki No Kuni was being animated. I felt like some of the stuff that was important was left out for the sake of "lemme make this shorter" which is really disappointing.

Some spoilers ahead. Correction: -Sensei is actually a gem, but a mythical and indestructible one. Also, I always thought that the fact that the gems don’t really change that much, was part of the setting (especially considering they all could’ve been existing there for thousands of years or more), and the drastic “character progression” of Phos was made possible only because she changed her “composition” throughout the story - which meant she simply wasn’t really herself anymore. The show time and again seemed to nod at the fact that it’s mostly an unchanging and boring community (the monotony broken only by those rare occasions when they find someone new, or lose someone in the fight against the Moon People). But maybe it’s just me overthinking it.

Shell B If you meant the sensei information, then it’s not really a spoiler. More like trivia? It is pretty obvious he is one of the gems, but one that seems invicible, and harder than any of them. Which means he can’t be a real world gem (considering Diamond is among the crew). Therefore „mythical”. Nothing plot relevant.

So you said how all of the other characters didnt go through any changes and instead of finishing the video I'm just gonna impulsively tell you my theory as to why they don't change. In land of the lustrous all of the other gems have a purpose and they live by their roles and have no desire to really change much, they work like gears on a clock, each doing their part and staying in line. Phos didn't have a place and desperately wanted one, the others however saw Phos as a nuisance, such as when Dia thought Phos was turned into a slug the others didn't care much and said that nothing would change. Phis was the only one to have the motivation and a reason to change, they wanted a place. Thank you to those who decided to read my sinanigins.

I get what you mean about open endings, especially ones that leave you hanging on a thread (I'm looking at you NGNL). However, I think that the mysterious ending fits the ethereal atmosphere the show was trying to present. Personally, I knew that we weren't going to get a solid conclusion. However, regardless of that, there was some closure to be made, and it didn't feel out of place. Phos became a new and more developed version of herself. At this point, shows that don't get sequels but deserve one isn't necessary a flaw in terms of the story as a whole. In fact, to me, it makes that show much more valuable and better. I would rather be torn by all these emotions of no sequel than to have a complete story but having it not be as riveting as I first expected. It's that small sliver of hope that keeps me watching anime. For example, after all these years, Danmachi is getting a season 2, and say what you want about Loli Big-Boobs, but I am super excited for something that I have waited 3 years for. That said, there is a possibility of a season two for this show. Orange, the studio, has recently sent out requests for freelance artists. Take that as you may, but the studio definitely has the budget and the support for their first massive hit to receive a continuation.

Having read the first 5 volumes of the manga (I couldn't help myself after how much I enjoyed the anime), I can definitely say that it did seem to mash things together to get to a halfway decent break point, even if it is a cliffhanger. They even moved Padparadscha's appearance forward, presumably because they felt that was significant enough they wanted to have it before the seasonal break. Ultimately, I'm not sure there was a good point for them to stop that wouldn't be a cliffhanger, at least without having enough episodes to adapt the entire manga. As for the animation, I really did love that part of it. I feel like part of what made the CG so good is the fact that so much of the anime feels like it couldn't have been done the way it was. Most notably the way it allows them to add texture to the characters' "hair" and other exposed gem parts, as well as some of the sweeping camera shots.

I can't say that the ending was the fault of the studio or author. It is just how many episodes they could produce and if they tried to give an ending then it would be completely rendered non-canon if there is a season 2 (hope there is). I read a couple chapters after the ending of the anime (waiting for more manga volumes to be available to buy) and from what I can see none of those events could give a nice ending and then be picked up again as they introduced another character and stuff.

To be fair MiA ends with a "checkpoint", to keep Mother's Basement game analogy. LotL ends with (arguably) a cliffhanger.

Even the gem similarity isn't all that much to go by. The gems in SU have their bodies basically being holograms, and there's little to no mention of hardness or other gem properties. Lustrous however has the gems derive their traits from the gem they are made from (Watermelon Tourmaline and Cinnabar especially), and their hardness is put into play heavily, especially when they fight. I really wish people would stop comparing the two. It's like comparing Fate with Battle Royale. Aside from the killing-game concept, there's little else to go by.

This is certainly interesting. I might just pick it up. As a long time fan of animation, traditional and nontraditional, I am pleased to see an eastern production use CGI competently without falling victim to the common visual problems you typically see.
