Lamy Lefthanded Nib: Fountain Pen Fix For Lefties?

Ғылым және технология

If you are a lefthanded writer and you use Lamy fountain pens, then you might want to explore the LH nib ( amzn.to/2E02tph ). It's a steel Lamy nib that will fit almost all Lamy pens (Safari, Al-Star, Lx, Vista, Studio, st, etc) that's designed for the push action of lefthanded writers.
The LH nib is sold in black as well: amzn.to/2E03I7V
The LH nib is sometimes sold included with a pen, but usually as an import, at least here in the US. Example: amzn.to/2TEIORd
Ultimately I'm not sure that LH nib is worth it for me, and probably not for most leftie writers, but it might make some small difference for some people. Honestly, if it made more of a difference I'm sure it would be much more common.

I went to a Lamy boutique today and as a lefty who puts hand above writing line, the left-handed nib was BY FAR the smoothest of the various nibs I tried including broad A, broad PVD, Aion, and several others. It is so slick on the paper that I actually ended up overshooting with it sometimes on strokes. I ended up buying a new pen with the LH nib.

Thanks for the review! I was especially impressed that you thought about mentioning the fact that right-to-left writing systems would work differently for left-handers. :)

I just got this nib, it writes nicely. Not too different from the other “normal” nibs but I don’t have to turn my paper 45 degrees like I usually do and yes, I wasn’t able to write with the pen laying down. It got super “scratchy”. Great review! 👍🏽

Thank you! I just bought pens from jetpens and didn’t realize there were nibs for left handers. I spent over $100.00. ☹️ I will have to save up for the correct supplies. Subscribed.

Thank you for sharing this video. Being LH often I wondered if a LH nib would better work for me. From your video I will remain with the M and F nib; EF is too thin and scratchy for me. Appreciate your video.

Thanks.. The part I was interested about is how it felt, and the idea of already adapting to the normal nibs I think I could spend my money on different widths than to waste it on a left handed nib. And to be honest it feels fine and I'm quite happy.

Great review, thanks. I just bought the LH nib. I can't really tell the difference between the normal medium nib. I'll let some right handed friends to try it and see if they notice a difference.

Thanks for this video! Was thinking of ordering one but I'm an overwriter so I'm not sure it'll help.

I'm left handed and have gotten one of these with the Safari. Can't see the difference but it does make a difference. It is simply a bit more comfortable and smoother to write with.

Yea, I think that's basically the common finding. It's a bit better but hard to pin down exactly how

Thanks for a great video have both LH and M Lame steel nibs. I am a left hander. With a X10 loupe I cannot be sure there is much (any?) difference in its grind. It is so slight. But here's my take should it be useful to folk. I have found that there is quite a bit of variation in Lamy's nibs. Some are more scratchy and some write more smoothly, in my hand. The LH nibs invariably write more smoothly for me, but I have Medium nibs by Lamy which are just a smooth. The 'scratchier' ( usually Medium) ones come into line in a couple of minutes of doing figure of eights on cardboard whilst rolling the pen side to side a little. The odd really scratchy ones come into line with the same movement using first 1 micron Mylar film followed by 0.3 Micron film. About ten figure of eights on each. Some Lamy nibs have feedback some are butter smooth. Just as you observed. My Pilot 836's (M) are both butter smooth straight out of the box. My Sailor Pro Gear Imperial Black (M) needed some work with mylar film to make it play nicely. But, that was so rough I think it was a Monday Morning nib. I write from below by the way.

There is a lot of variation in these nibs. Check out the allowable variation specs in my Lamy nib guide! unsharpen.com/lamy-nib-buying-guide/

I'm a LH under-writer, with the page angled 45° to the right, my writing has a _reverse-slant_ and I hold the pen about 50mm back from the tip of the nib. I gave up forward-slanted writing like a RH writer. The way I write, I am for the most part, dragging rather than pushing the pen down the paper. When I started using a fountain pen, I found the nib doesn't dig in, so a LH-ground nib would have no advantage.

@@unsharpen Hi, yes, that was my aim. There were no offset pens or anything like that at the time. I learnt my writing technique from a LH highschool teacher. She said, stop trying to write like a RH writer, with forward-slant, across the page etc. Writing down the page with a reverse-slant, was the only way I was going to speed up my writing with less pain, and it worked. The added benefit was no smudging, as my hand completely clears the writing line, perfect for fountain pen writing. The only thing I have purchased for LH use, was a high quality, pair of LH scissors.

Does this nib make it possible to write with a safari?

Sal The cuts in the section don’t naturally line up with where I put my fingers. I’ve looked around and it doesn’t look like the left bib helps much. As much as I want to like the safari, I can never really use it. I’ll probably get rid of it eventually

No I don’t believe it will. The left hand nib will help with your nib pushing problems but you can accomplish the same by going up a nib size. The nib is left hand specific so the oblique angle it has will be the opposite of what you need.
