Used to take my kids to Lakeside when we lived in Colorado. It's a shame the owners don't have the money to really properly maintain and run the park. It is a gem of yesteryear and the kind of Amusement park I used to love as a kid. Would love to see the park fully restored, wish I had the money to do it.

@@teresaroger8826 I first went there in 1980 or 1982. It was run down back then but now it is Krabby Land. By the way you describe her she must be Mrs. Krabs. (Sorry for the SpongeBob theme but it seems to fit.) Last year I heard Elitches is getting kicked off their lot. They should have left it where it was.

Fun fact: Lakeside Amusement Park was one of the amusement parks featured on the PBS documentary Great Old Amusement Parks back in the late 90s. It opened in 1908 and was originally named White City and the train that goes around the lake was brought in from the 1904 St Louis World's Fair so it's older than the park itself.

Lakeside was the bees knees back in the 60s-70s. During the summer as a kid our parents would take us there & to (the old) Elich Gardens. 😊 The good ol days.

30 years ago they used to maintain Lakeside really well and everything was working and it was crowded. I spent a lot of time at Lakeside in the 70s and 80s, and the original Elitch Gardens which was so much better than Lakeside. Good memories. Thanks Adam!

My grandfather worked at Lakeside in the 50's so I went there and to the racetrack a lot. There was a very loud Laughing Sal over the fun house door that still haunts my memories. Thanks for this video, Adam. 🙂

Same here! Though not quite as often as once per week. But a few times a summer, my group of friends and family kids would be dropped off for the entire day. My personal favorite attraction was the funhouse. It wasn't unusual to spend 2 to 3 hours in there. I was one of the older kids, so was also responsible for the younger ones. I think I went to Elitches maybe 4 times total, compared to at least 100 times for Lzkeside. We loved Lakeside!

The 60's were the hay days of Lakeside (in north Denver) along with the old original Ellitch Gardens that they unfortunately tore down and built a new one in downtown Denver. I rode the Wild Chipmunk ride and sprained my ankle, it was a very rough ride and I was 7, maybe too small for the ride. I loved the train around the lake. The wooden coasters scared the crap out of me!. Too bad that no one has come in to fix it up to what it once was.

It definitely is rough around the edges. I agree that the 1960's and I'd argue even into the early 1970's were the park's golden years. After that it has been downhill with many challenges and unfortunate sacrifices, like the Fun House, but at least they didn't move like Elitch Gardens. It could use a lot of work, but if you really look every year you will notice little fixes that go on in the background in the winter. They are bringing back the Roll O Plane and Heart Flip!

Art Deco reached it's height of popularity in the 1920's era. The 1950's/1960's drive in marquee type building style was different than Art Deco, n the Art Nouveau was early 1900's up to 1920's Art Deco period. This Lakeside amusement park is one of the coolest places I have ever seen!!! The rides, amazingly enough, are still running and they are originals that you don't see anymore. This entire jewel 💎 of a park 🏞️ is a classic span of decades of different era decor n building n technology!!! What a great choice!!!! Attaboy, Adam the Woo!!!! Wonderful video!!!

Most of the art deco in this park was made in the late 1930's to the mid 1940's at the tail end of the art deco era. Some later 1950's and 1960's stuff lightly played off of the earlier art deco stuff to create a very constant environment. Definitely is a jewel!

Thank you for posting an honest and positive video about Lakeside! Too many times people, even locals, badmouth Lakeside and judge it by it's looks calling it an eyesore or a dump in some cases sometimes without even having visited before. Sure, it has seen much better days and needs quite a bit of work, but it is still very much a fun place to visit and ride some classic rides. It has charm, and as a Colorado native it has been my favorite summertime activity since I was little. It is really unique and remains a very special part of Denver, especially considering its previous rival amusement park, Elitch Gardens, relocated from it's original 1890 location in 1994. Up until then Elitch Gardens was mere blocks away from Lakeside and both parks were quaint older family run amusement parks. Then Elitch's decided to relocate to downtown Denver, losing all of it's own charm and destroying 104 years of Denver history in the process. What is really cool about Lakeside is that it has been run by the same family since 1935. It is owned by Rhoda Krasner and her daughter Brenda helps run the park. They really are nice people and are passionate about what they do. Unfortunately Rhoda can be stubborn and routinely turns down most outside efforts of help, whether it be restoration campaigns or even fundraising to help the park. If I had the means and if she'd be more open to outside assistance, I'd love to donate to help fix the walls, repaint, and re-light the tower of jewels for starters. I really wish this place could become a national landmark. It truly deserves it for a multitude of reasons not limited to Denver historical significance. It's really too bad you went when the Cyclone was down. That's the most iconic and popular ride in the park. It really is a fun classic wooden roller coaster! Unfortunately it has been down all season this year and most of the season last year due to a accident and lawsuit from a rider who didn't follow instructions and apparently injured himself. This has really hurt the park, and the Cyclone will likely never operate the same way again, but will likely return, hopefully next season! Anyways, love your content! Keep up the great work, and thanks for going to Lakeside with an open mind! Glad you enjoyed your visit and liked this hidden Denver gem!

The Cyclone was an awesome wooden coaster that scared me every time I went down the first big drop; the anticipation of going up the big hill only added to the experience, then the immediate left turn at the bottom and getting smashed against the side of the car. It really is a cool place. I've been going since I was a kid and it really is stuck in time for the most part. Only a few things have changed in 20 or even 30 years, and that's rare in most parks these days. Fridays and weekend days are always a much better time to visit as more is open and more lights are on. There are always some lights out, but that's just how it is with these vintage lit buildings and rides, plus neon isn't cheap. It likely isn't going away immediately, but definitely come check it out as soon as you find the opportunity! It's future is very uncertain.

The old amusement parks like that are pretty much gone now. It looks like that one is on its way out too. Very reminiscent of the amusement parks near St. Louis, the Chain of Rocks Amusement Park, and Holiday Hill. Both now just a distant memory. It was a time for me when we could escape the everyday doldrums of our youth, and have a blast. Cotton candy and popcorn. Even a soda, which we rarely got. Too bad they are not keeping up some of the bigger rides. I’m sure the roller coaster needs structural reinforcement, but what a draw it would be to the park! Looks like fun!

It definitely is one of the last parks of it's kind. It slowly is going away, but the fact that rides aren't taken down and never seen again is a somewhat good sign. The Cyclone is down because of an accident that apparently happened last year and has prevented them from operating it. A ride supposedly didn't follow the safety instructions and the park's insurance on the coaster likely skyrocketed even if it wasn't their fault. In 20 years last year and this year have been the only times it has been closed, and it definitely has affected guest attendance.

That park looks like you stepped back in time…this is so dang cool!!!! The chipmunk coaster looks like my favorite. If this park was up at 100% functionally it would bring loads of money. Beautiful art deco and neon 🤩

If the park would bring in loads of money, they wouldn’t have an issue keeping the rides in working order.

The problem is that most of Denver just doesn't care anymore like they did in the past decades. It really is special and unique to Denver. So many people assume the worst without even going to see for themselves and giving it a fair chance.

@@MisterTwister1964 the excuse that people don’t care about older things is tiring and just lazy assumption. People are busy. People literally have less free time and extra money now than ever before. We are always working and it’s never enough. It isn’t that people cared more about an amusement park years ago. It’s that people had the time and resources to do things that are only for leisure.

@@willb.383 That may be true that people don’t have as much time, but Lakeside is dirt cheap. It’s $5 to get in and you can buy tickets around 50 cents a piece for a chosen amount of rides or bands with unlimited rides for $30. Yet everyone goes to Elitch Gardens. I wonder why? Maybe because it seems nicer yet isn’t in many ways, like having crappy rides that break down and no significant maintenance done on rides often enough to keep them running reliably. There’s always trash too as well as basically no landscaping. Lakeside has wonderful shade trees and even some gardens. Elitch Gardens is more expensive. Gate entry is $60 often $70 even. Maybe because it’s the “newer” park yet repeatedly is a huge disappointment because it is run extremely poorly and has little to no investment. Another comment I put somewhere else on this video is true, and that’s that most people think of it as an ugly eyesore and often don’t even visit once.

@@willb.383 Do you think money grows on trees? You have to invest to get money back. That’s how this works. They don’t make enough to invest as much as bigger parks. You can’t just magically make a bunch of money. They also do a much better job keeping their rides in working order because they are older and were built to last. Unlike the crappy newer rides they have at Elitch Gardens which constantly face downtime for tons of mechanical issues and staffing issues since they struggle badly to even staff half of their park on any given day.

Visited Lakeside every summer in the 60’s. They had a building called the “Funhouse”, with a laughing manikin above the entrance. No parent would let their kids in there nowadays, as it would be considered too dangerous. I’m glad I grew up when I did.

14:40 yes those stairs used to be the main entrance at one point...my friend and I used to get dropped off right there and we would enter the park at the top of the stairs (late 70's)....lots of memories there.

All of those old rides. You should make sure to hit up Kennywood Park when you're here next June in Pittsburgh seeing the Rays. Not terribly far away is a more chill park called Idlewild that's more geared for kids but really something that might also be up your alley. Lots of fun things to do around Pittsburgh.
