    That was a magical day, 4 inches of perfect black ice on a blue bird day. We had similar ice last week on northern Winnipesaukee but the day was overcast. Check it out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lpWLu5JsnKe3ftY.htmlsi=tDOG8Z4Vi6mjrYQL

    Any type of hand held wing will work, but these high tech Kitewings work great on ice.

    We dream of smooth ice like this, looking forward to another great season! I think inflatable wings are good for foils on water (I have not tried it yet) and Kitewings are good for ice. You need a stiff wing to handle the very fast apparent wind speeds.

    I used to ice sail with a Mistral Ski Sailer. Loads of fun. Managed to score a set of of old school 223cm downhillers. Well, had been using 207 Giant Slalom skis and on bulletproof glare I could go quick. Along come the 223s. WHOLE NEW world of lurid speed. New skis turn to well. The holey grail of speed off course is 240cm speed skis. Have seen those go. WEAPONS. If you or anyone you know wants to go really really fast, find a set. It s like having a railway track on the surface.

    Hey that sounds like fun! I have a pair of 215 cm DH skis with 50 meter radius, they go great on ice. I wish they had a more turned up tip in case you hit a chunk of ice at speed. The 35 meter GS skis are perfect for gybes with a kitewing, just set the edge and ride the sidecut around the turn. But they are not as fast as the DH skis.

    @@wingkitefoil I competed at a WISSA world championship in Ontario around year 1990 ish. Was on Lake Couchiching. Finnish guy with 240 speed skis won. You want an infinite turning radius at speed above 50 mph. With turny skis it's tempting to apply lots of tip pressure to stay off the wind. That works until it fantastically DOESN'T. Resulting in a blow out of front grip with a resulting introduction of your shoulder into the surface at whatever speed is happening can be "uncomfortable"? Alternative with turny skis is constantly climbing upwind and bearing off, this I am sure you know. So old school "straight" 223cm are great and feel like skates on glare anyway. Sounds like you got a pretty good set up there.

    Absolutely cool! What would be the wing size for skis on later season snow? 184cm/84kg

  • @wingkitefoil

    @wingkitefoil

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! It depends on the wind and snow conditions. The 5.5 is a good all around wing with enough grunt to get up and go on snow and is stable. That is the first wing I would get, but eventually you will want a quiver for different conditions.

    If you are on glare or a fast surface it can be preferable to under rig. Top speed will be drag limited. So a big sail will take off great but become unruly as speeds climb. Small sail will pull until your speed becomes FEAR limited.

    You are correct, the smaller wings are faster on ice in high winds. The 3.0 and 4.0 Kitewing are great high wind wings. I have gone 58 mph on the 3.0 with carbon fiber frame. The stiff and lightweight carbon frames are a huge performance advantage.

  • @wingkitefoil

    Inflatable wings are great on ice in light wind but Kitewings handle strong wind better. I just started wing foiling last year and my friend Martin is getting really good at it.

  • @wingkitefoil

    @wingkitefoil

    2 жыл бұрын

    I assume you mean inflatable wings for foiling on water. Those work well on snow and ice, they are easy and very forgiving. The Kitewing is faster, because the stiff frame holds its shape in bigger winds. I have gone 58 mph on a 3.0 Kitewing and often go over 40 mph.
