Lake Street Dive is a band in possession of such a confounding number of strengths that it hardly seems fair. Rachael Price has a signature, once-in-a-generation voice and I'm frankly puzzled by Bridget Kearney's ability to sing and play bass at the same time, skills I would equate with being able to fly a plane while performing brain surgery. Not to be outdone, the two Mikes, "McDuck" Olson and Calabrese (guitar/trumpet and drums, respectively), provide gigantic, airtight harmonies while also displaying downright virtuosic playing. So yeah, I was a nervous wreck the whole time this was going down, but the end result is one of my favorite videos we've ever done.
I wrote to Chris Newett at Peluso to confirm that the P-12 was the right call on Rachael's vocal mic and he assured me that it was. We used the P-28 to capture McDuck's guitar playing and the P-49 on Mike Calabrese's tambourine. I placed the 2247se between them in a figure 8 position to capture their backing vocals and used my brand spanking new P-87 on Bridget's vocals. Finally, I ran the bass directly through a Universal Audio 4-710 preamp. The trailer can be a little boomy, so I used the low frequency roll-off on everything except for the bass d.i.
All audio for Yellow Couch Sessions is recorded and mixed by Steven Foxbury of Yellow Couch Studio. Video for this session was shot and edited by awesome partner, Matt Dayak.

2022, Enjoying some genuine talent and a good bottle of red on a winter's Sunday afternoon...I am so grateful right now
Sound quality of this performance is fantastic - well done Yellow Couch audio techs! It's really nice to hear Bridget's bass right up front in the mix.

Thank you, Peter. We're always working to get better at this and your words of encouragement mean a lot.

I agree. So often the electric bass has about the personality of a bass drum. With an acoustic bass it's so much easier to hear the notes and the quality of the notes being played and that is really true here. I used to do jazz radio shows with a guy who would announce, "and that was [insert name here] on electric bass, and [insert another name here] on REAL bass."
They've been working/playing together for so long, and you can tell how much they enjoy it/each other in every vid.
It must have been difficult to fit all that talent into such a small space!
You guys use tempo change to influence the mood better than many groups. It's one of the most interesting components of your music. Keep doing what you do!! Thanks.
I love it when Mike plays the tambourine in acoustic sessions... they are so talented. Even this stripped down they sound amazing.

Same here, he's great on the tambourine! I just discovered this band a couple months ago and wow!
So grateful to hear such brilliant recording of this supremely talented band, pure bliss :)))
Such a cool band . I can't get enough of there music. I think I have totally falling for Rachel . lol ...she's something...wish I could meet her although she's way out of my class. Sure enjoy watching them preform
This is interfering with me getting work done. I just want to listen to Rachel, but I keep opening up the screen so I can watch her. Her facial expressions are such a huge part of the music. KNow what I mean?
I'm a bit of a late comer to this band , but they certainly have me hooked. My god how good can you be..these plain cessions just showcase their amazing un assuming talents! Please keep it up.
Sweet sound…
Brilliant as always. Most soulful voice we have .
I love this band so much.

Rachael is a great blues singer. Like Amy Winehouse. She needs to be a household name.

Rachael says that this type of lifestyle (in an interview) has made having any serious relationship or a family difficult. However, McDuck is married.
Fabulous version of this song!
Come to Philly. PLEASE!!!

The new Janis Joplin !

Except far more trained and skilled. Janis worked on pure raw power.
it must suck getting stuck with a tambourine cas of the new hipster fad of jamming bands in a tight space and making them preform. It doesnt make it anymore authentic if they look like starving artist. I promise i dont care if they dont have elbow room. Give this drummer some elbow room a drum to hit and a camera for those faces!
