Lake St. Clair prespawn Smallmouth early spring " HOW TO"

Спорт

2021 VIDEO: Here is a video from, this year, I caught a 7lb'r! • Early Spring Lake St. ...
How to target prespawn smallmouth in Lake St. Clair!
A couple of things I didn't mention. For what it's worth, water temp was 42 degrees. The more active fish will be found on the top breakline of the channel or slot. If no fish are found on top, fish inside the channel. It's not about the bait or lure, it's all about DEPTH and SPEED control! I don't know why my webcam stopped recording after awhile..

If you guys ever get the chance to head up North to Traverse City, in the spring/fall, let me know and I can put you on some GIANTS. AWESOME video

    Jim, heading to LSC the June 5 to the 14th. Watched your great video. Fantastic. I am staying 4 miles inside the north branch. At that time, can you share some suggestions as to best places to catch smallmouth? Thanks so much.

    Jim, thank you for a great analysis of prespawn bass fishing in LSC. Your vids are always high quality, detailed and educational. I especially enjoyed the vacation walleye trips you've shared, and explained what you did to find 'em. I have a question....what is the scientific reasoning for LSC being a world-class muskie fishery in both numbers and size given that the average depth is just 11 ft. I think I recall from Don Dickson that the average sanctuary depth for muskies is about 55 ft. Does the fact that the lake is flushed every 4 days by rivers north and south have something to do with it? Also, IMO the lake is somewhat clear with weed growth at 8-15 ft. Thanks.

    Hi Bob, This was only my 3rd time fishing LSC, and I also had the same questions. I was surprised how clear it can get. I was told later in the spring/summer the weed growth can be pretty bad. My guess why this relatively shallow body of water produces big fish is because it is very fertile. I know that the big muskies also migrate into the Detroit river. There are a handful of spoonpluggers that fish for them in the river and do real good. John Bales several years ago caught a 56" there. But in the river you are catching most of them in 30/35ft. Back in LSC you would think the main shipping channel would be good, being the deepest water, but when the barges go thru you can see a very murky trail behind them. I'm guessing the prop wash churns up the bottom and causes an unstable condition, why I would not fish the main channel in LSC. I hope to spend some more time on LSC. If your looking for quality and quantity of most all game fish, the Great lakes and waterways seem the best places to go.

    I don't recall exactly on that trip, but most of my trips for early season smallies is late March to end of April. Water temps are from upper 30's to upper 40's during that time.

    Hi Jim,, funny you ask about boats, I should be uploading a video soon talking about boats. Bottom line it really comes down to your personal preference and where you plan on doing most of your fishing. With that being said, in my opinion you want to go with the narrowest beam (width) possible. If your fishing the great lakes often, and plan on making long runs out, you have to think more about safety. But plain old commonsense plays a big part. I would not go out on great lakes with big waves forecasted. I was caught in Green Bay 6 miles out last year in 4 to 5 foot waves, but took it easy and slowed down and was ok. (but was a bit nerve racking for awhile!) With your two choices, I would go with the 76" beam Alumacraft. If I had to replace my boat today, I was eyeing the Vision 1600 tiller by Crestliner. It's 81" beam, but I like the layout and storage it offers. Not sure what the hull warranties are for all of those, but I would definitely look into that too. Good luck with what you decide on!

    Thanks for the quick response. How much does width and weight have to do with boat control? Which is more important?

  • @StructureFishing

    Width is the most important. The narrower the better control. Weight really isn't much of a concern, other than towing.

    What rod,reel, and line lb do you use?

  • @StructureFishing

    @StructureFishing

    4 жыл бұрын

    Medium heavy, fast tip rod, I believe a Dobyns FR 705CB, don't recall the reel, 17lb monofilament line. PS.. I don't think the rod/line/reel in the overall picture is that important. What is important is knowing where to cast (structure) and the speed control needed for the fish to strike.
