The 2016 bushfires destroyed the population of pencil pine trees around Lake Mackenzie in central Tasmania. These pines are endemic to Tasmania and can grow for up to 1200 years! Being fire-sensitive, the pines have not regrown. Hydro Tasmania has embarked on a regeneration project that is both restoring degraded areas around Lake Mackenzie and replanting these important plant species.
