Lake Huron Rock Hunt, Including Polished and Slabbed Finds

We went to the pinery provincial Park in Grand bend Ontario last weekend. We found a whole bunch of smaller pudding stones, a really nice agate and our first piece of banded chert. Great video as always 👍

Rocks like the banded iron are dangerous, because it makes me wonder how many marginally interesting rocks are really cool on the inside. The danger is that I spend all day cutting random rocks looking for hidden treasure. 😊

What Rob doesn't tell you is that his beach walks are seriously athletic affairs. We walked many miles, which wouldn't have been a big deal, except I picked up way too many rocks! Rob, who is more selective in what he takes home, was kind enough carry half of my back in his bucket.

I often wonder how many people realize how many hours on the beach get distilled down to a 15 or 20 minute video. Kind of like fishing shows, they don't show you all the time just sitting there waiting for something to happen.

I just remembered a few years ago I was there in mid Oct and the restroom were still open. Lucky for me because the waves were really rolling in and I lost my balance and fell in on my knees. Before I could get up the next wave completely knocked me over and I was drenched from head to toe. Fortunately my wife had enough smarts to bring a complete change of clothes and I changed in the restroom there. On the way home we got rear ended by a driver that left the scene.

@MichiganRocks
10 ай бұрын
I can answer very confidently that it would. Sam and I have tumbled quite a bit of banded chert and it almost always ends up gray no matter what color it started out. In this case, since Jonathan slabbed that rock, you can see exactly what color the inside is. You can see how deep the iron goes too. It's not very deep at all.
@jonathanyoung7785

Anytime you see that rust color on the outside of a rock there is a decent chance that it's only on the surface. In the case of banded chert, we knew it was only on the outside since banded chert is never that color (as far as I know).

The farthest south east in Michigan that I have hunted rocks is in Port Huron. There are good rocks there, but there are LOTS of people hunting them, so you're not likely to find much. Here are a couple videos, both in the off season. The sound is really messed up on the second one. I'm not recommending these beaches at all, just answering your question the best I could. If you're going to drive that far, I'd go up to the U.P. and hunt Lake Superior. It's farther, but you'll find better rocks and the beaches will be much less crowded. I wouldn't know a meteorite if I saw one, to be honest. I'm fairly sure that's magnetite, though. I find magnetite in Lake Superior that have sort of geometric patterns on them similar to the one Jonathan found. In the U.P. they often have red on them, but not always.

Get your Charlevoix stone yet? If not, I'll send you mine.

I have some Charlevoix stones, so I'm all set. Thanks though.
At 8:37 is the rock you called “goofy looking “. Is it a stromatolite? I’ve been trying to determine how to distinguish a stromatolite from other swirly banded rocks.

I'm not sure what that one was. I'm getting sort of good at identifying stromatoporoids, but not stromatolites as much.

I'm not a stromatolite expert but I can certainly see the resemblance.
I've been waiting my whole life to go rock hunting in michigan. But when I googled it, it said I have to have a permit to rock hunt on lake michigan. Is this true? If so, where can I get it?

No, that's not true. You can legally hunt rocks on the shores of the Great Lakes in Michigan. The beaches on inland lakes are private, but the Great Lakes beaches are public. There is a 25 pound per year per person limit, and you can't hunt rocks on National Lakeshores like Sleeping Bear Dunes or Pictured Rocks.
You got to make money from these beautiful stones I hope you do ♥️🇬🇧

We're both just hobbyists. I sell a very, very few things that I make out of rocks, but mostly, I'm just happy to see some beautiful things on the beach.

Make money? I spend a lot of money on rocks and rock related equipment. But I haven't made any money yet...
I was wondering if the red in the one at 3:00 is maybe Hematite?
@jonathanyoung7785

I thought it was hematite and jasper when I first saw it, but after looking closer it wasn't banded iron formation (banded hematite and red jasper). Or if it was banded iron formation, it didn't look like any that I've ever seen in Michigan.

I agree with Jonathan. The colors are vaguely similar and the stripes are somewhat similar, but looking at the whole thing, I just don't see hematite.
What one is your port huron video.

I have two. The first one's sound is really bad. The other one is fine though. They're at different beaches. Fort Gratiot Park: kzread.info/dash/bejne/naqFqsmmn9Otnto.html Lakeport State Park: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z3mh0Kepp6XOm7w.html

We're going to say no to avoid having to confront the possibility that we left behind a meteorite. But you're right; it is possible.
