Always a tough question because the trails change from year to year. I think you could go to Animas Fork and take Road # 2 to Silverton ok but going the way I went through Mineral Creek to Ouray might be tough for you. But you never know unless you try. You can always turn around. Good luck and thanks for watching.

All I can imagine is, "I hope I don't run out of gas"! These roads aren't used a LOT in winter!

Wow, good stuff. I wonder if I have the lung capacity for those elevations since I live at sea level. Also, I don't recall seeing any motorcycles. A couple of bikes. But, no motorbikes. The most rugged was from Engineer Pass toward Silverton with all the steep switchbacks.

It's a slow climb so the body has time to adjust. But everyone is different. I guess you wouldn't know till you try. I have seen plenty of motorcycles in past trips but none this day. Thanks for watching.

I lived at around 1000 feet elevation for over 50 years. Would occasionally go to SE mountains that were 4K to 5K feet. In my mid 50s I moved to AZ mountains, living at 6500ft and recreating at up to around 12K. At first it was hard to acclimate - headaches were a problem. After a few months I was fine. If you are just there a short time be sure to stay well hydrated and don’t over exert. You will be fine unless you have health issues. Of course, gift shops in some of the loftier towns actually sell personal oxygen bottles if you need the help.

Great videos. We'll be there next month so for a rookie, what do do do if you come into another vehicle on one of the "skinny" sections. That 1st section at the beginning, lots of skinny straights, with nowhere to pull over.

On mountain roads where there is not enough room for two vehicles, the downhill-facing vehicle must yield right of way to the vehicle going up, either by stopping or by backing up to a wider point, unless it is safer and more practical for the vehicle going up to move over. At 21:00 you'll see me climb a bank to get over enough for the vehicle to pass. Try to look ahead to plan.for these occasions. Don't stress as most off road people are great and we look out for each other. Enjoy the ride and thanks for watching.

Road conditions, traffic and stops for pics etc. always dictate travel times for us. It seems like it took 3 hours the last time we went that route. Lake city to Animas Forks over Engineer Pass is the slower part. Animas Forks to Silverton on road # 2 has better road conditions and is usually faster. Total mileage about 35 miles depending on the route you take. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for your comment. On this trip I used a Gropro Hero 6 black with built-in stabilization on a magnetic mount. A 128 Gb micro sd card gives you 4 hrs of 4k recording time and I use a constant power supply so I don't have to change batteries. That's the best way to watch for sure. Hope you make it there. It's an amazing area. We were lucky, the weather the day before was rain and the day after it snowed. Thanks for watching.

Hi Don, thank you for these 2 videos, we're headed to Ouray in a week to do some of these trails. Do you happen to remember how long it takes to drive from Lake City to Ouray (Alpine Loop/Mineral Creek)? Excluding stops, just drive time. I'm wondering if we can drive to Lake City in the morning, have lunch, then come back in the afternoon, or if it's much longer than that. Thank you thank you!

Thank you for the quick response Don, I have a follow up question if you don’t mind… it seems that shelf roads are inevitable but on this route are there any/many shelf roads where it’s barely wide enough for a jeep or is there always plenty of width? Is it ever real skinny and scarily off-camber at the same time? And how’s the visibility of oncoming traffic, could you ever get head to head with another vehicle on a very skinny part where someone has to do a treacherous backup? We’ll be riding on the weekdays which should help. Thank you!

@@john-xs3rs Pretty much yes to everything. Part 3 shows the skinny off camber shelf sections. Off road rules are the vehicle going uphill has the right of way. You should remember the wide spots in case you have to backup. If it's easier and safer for the other rig to pull over then that's what should happen. Having a capable rig is helpful. Weekdays are a good choice. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. Probably a little snow on top by now. Take it slow and pay attention, you'll be fine. These mountains are amazing, enjoy the ride. @@donm8011 Thanks Don, I didn't know there was a 3rd episode - very helpful. There are some skinny slightly off-camber spots that would have a good pucker factor - the vehicle is capable (4-seater RZR) but I'm not a fan of heights - low & slow should do the trick though. I'll ask around about the weather, I'm not sure I'd do it with any/much snow on the ground, which seems like it's pretty likely 1.5 weeks from now, but we'll see. From what I read taking Corkscrew Gulch to California Gulch is a longer but much more tame route to catch the Alpine Loop (we're hoping to get to Lake City for lunch, then get back to Ouray) - have you taken those routes to be able to speak to how they compare skinny shelf-road wise?

@@john-xs3rs Most trails have there own areas of concern, Corkscrew and California gulch are no different but nothing like mineral basin. The scenery is awesome as well. RZRs are real popular in these mountains and pass me all the time lol. You'll have a great time.

These videos are making my stomach tense up! haha. Definitely on my bucket list, but am thinking I'll find a place to rent one of those buggies I see going up and down the trail/road, instead of using my subaru wagon. Subarus are great they have their limits. LoL

On this trip we used a GoPro Hero 6 black. The mount is a rubber coated magnetic GoPro mount like this one. www.amazon.com/Rubber-Coated-Magnet-Mount-Cameras/dp/B00NF8812S. The camera has built in stabilization and works really well. The mount is very strong and won't scratch the paint. Thanks for watching.
