Today i read article on Fb about lyricist raja mehandi ali khan His tragic life and its shadow on his Poetry. His father was king of small part in india during british era. Raja mehandi khan was married to beautiful lady. They had no child and his wife was very sad. Doctor say she may be suffered from Cancer! And due to fear of missing loving wife he felt Sick and died within few years. Afterwards revealed that she was OK. All the sadness was filled in his poetry. The meaning of the song is "Come into my arms because this night may never come again; In this life, we may never meet again" It is a very beautiful song, and makes me choke up too. She has been awarded with the highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, that is, 'the Gem of India' by the government of India. But you are coming from a totally different culture. You Didn't know the lyrics, and still the emotions reached your heart just by listening to this song, that is great! That 'sigh' of yours when you heard her voice, sub-consciously its the life, its the magic of her voice. Deep and full , pure yet as raw as honey is her voice.

Such a great song. Lata Mangeshkar is a legend and icon of Indian music culture. I remember one of her songs was used in a Hollywood movie called Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. The track is called ‘Wada Na Tod’. It’s utterly beautiful.

Lata Mangeshkar is just a singer. Shes this really short, very simple lady, who simply dedicated her life to music and to perfecting her art. If you see her live, shes very very shy and quiet. But the interesting this is.. there is not a human being alive who is more responsible for making indian cinema what it is than Lata. Thats weird to say about a singer right? No actor, director, producer, writer has had the same all-encompassing impact that she has had. That voice and those melodies stay with you longer than anything else when you see the movies.

Since you're so fond of Lata's voice react to her live concert singing...'ye kahan aa gaye hum' with Amitabh Bachan...you'll actually see her singing...

Amanda you found the best singer and your reactions are genuine. There is not a day goes by when I appreciate her singing like you have done. Lata is no more but she has left us with thousands and thousands of her songs, each with different life's emotions and feelings. Many of these songs are classical & rendered with ease & with the sweetest of voice. She had full control of range from low to very high pitches. She sang for hundreds of composers, and her songs were picturized on hundreds of actresses making them popular as well. A career that lasted 7 decades.

This song means alot amanda. That still this world doesnt make any song like this ...

I love this song with my life. But IMHO saying that no other song is as iconic as this one sounds like belittling Lata's other thousands of classics , e.g Rahen na rahen hum, Naino me badra, Ye raat bheegi bheegi, Kuch dil ne kaha, Ayega aane wala (oh God I could go on and on). All these songs are iconic in their own right. Sorry if I come across as rude unintentionally.

@@paragist as much as I like Sadhana, you need to realize that Audrey Hepburn was already a successful star in Hollywood starting her movie career in 1953. She had already gained fame through movies like Roman holiday and Sabrina with her fringe haircut by the time Sadhana entered hindi film industry in 1960. Her director AND husband for her first film modeled her haicut based on Audrey's haircut since he was a big fan of Audrey Hepburn. So by all means, Sadhana was the Audrey of India, not the other way around. 🙂

This song is a classic but watch the movie , I recommend in complete solitude, in peace , light candles(winter is approaching )as it is a suspense triller -a doctor working late nite shift mets a strange women always asking 4 lift on his way home, stops 4 her at a graveyard then eventually he gets trapped in her web. This is dark espionage n bet you will immensely enjoy the movie Woh kaun thi meaning who was her.
