CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Captain Etienne Navarre (Rutger Hauer) finally gets his chance to fulfill his quest to kill the Bishop of Aquila (John Wood).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In medieval France, knight Rutger Hauer and lady fair Michelle Pfeiffer both run afoul of evil-bishop John Wood. Through the auspices of bishop's confessor Leo McKern, Hauer and Pfeiffer are placed under a curse. During the night, Hauer takes the form of a wolf, while Pfeiffer assumes the form of a hawk by day. The two lovers can only meet one another as humans at dawn and dusk. The only mortal in a position to rescue Hauer and Pfeiffer from their fate is nebbishy pickpocket Matthew Broderick, who acts as liaison between the lovers. With the help of the guilt-ridden McKern--and a convenient solar eclipse--Broderick endeavors to set things aright.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate the spot-on performance of English stage actor John Wood as the villainous Bishop in this scene? The smarmy "we must think of Isabeau" facial expression, then the look of mixed shock and horror at "Isabeau is dead," then the look of appalled terror at Isabeau's appearance, then the mixed longing and loathing as Navarre forces him to look at them both together. Every facial expression is bang-on, we know exactly what's going through his head without even a word of dialogue. A masterclass in acting right there.

I watched this as a child on VHS, on an old TV - I did not see the out-of-focus sillohette of Isabeu entering the scene behind the captain. That makes the scene even more glorious, and now I wish I were old enough to have seen it in the theatre with that sharpness. A ghostly irony, just as the captain said "Isabeau is dead." Imagine being the Bishop, saying "We must think of Isabeau," and then seeing her arrive, in human form, immediately after. Imagine being the captain, thinking with such hatred that the Bishop's horrified face was at her death and the prospect of his own, when it was actually due to seeing her face again. But no, the Bishop's eyes were not looking to the Captain, but behind him to Isabeau. Then, the captain hears her voice for he first time in years and immediately knowing it like it was yesterday. Sword in hand, ready to strike revenge, both men completely disarmed by the voice of a woman. God, such a brilliant moment.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the talent of the late Shakespearean actor John Wood, for playing the role of the Bishop so perfectly, especially his portrayal of the Bishop's holier-than-thou exterior concealing his inner obsession with Isabeau. This was actually a very difficult character to play and he absolutely nailed it in my opinion.

The original script had a different ending in mind for the Bishop - Navarre rises to kill him but before he strikes there's a flash of lightning, all the candles go out, and when everyone looks again there's a scrawny, mangy, diseased-looking wolf standing where the Bishop was - and the wolf runs out of the church, tail-between-legs never to be seen again. I would have liked to see that ending.

No movie had ever showed the darker side of catholicism like this one, A severely underrated movie, Even love is more powerful than a Corrupt bishop!

Magic, excitement, drama, action, fantasy, thrills, and adventures. At last, the curse is broken and the two lovers are human again! It's the end of the bishop's wickedness and may God punish him for his sins, guilty of this crime. Navarre and his love are free 🧚🧚‍♂🧚‍♀
