Lady's Position | Smooth and Standard (Tips and Exercises)

Фильм және анимация

Lady's Position is difficult! In this video, Kora goes into detail about how she achieves and maintains her dance position when she dances Standard or Smooth. It's a little odd, but it looks great in partnership!
Not only does she give you the rundown on how to achieve this position, but she also outlines the exercises she uses and teaches to her own students.

    We're so happy this was helpful! A lot of ladies arch their lower backs, which actually puts more strain on the neck. The stronger your core, the more efficiently your entire body can work to create big shapes without undue strain on the neck.

    Kora, thank you so much for this tutorial! Instruction about lady's position is very rare to come by. I am about 9 inches shorter than my partner (!) so your tips for coping with this are fantastic. Kora and Simeon, your instruction and presentation are always so thorough and clear. I'm always super excited when you publish new videos! I have been studying your Latin Barre course which is also excellent. Thanks again!

    It will take some time for me to process all the gold nuggets in this video. The presentation of both the description and the body position opened my eyes a little wider! As a leader in a social dance environment, I have noticed how many different ways followers connect but this is the first clear explanation of the technical and technique from the followers perspective. I will be more aware of how my partners and I connect. Thank you!

    Are the man's hips kept level during closed hold and his right hip picked up in promenade?

    Thank you so much for sharing, and with such a detailed explanation!! I especially appreciate your attention to the hip position, I believe, this is the first time I come by an instruction that actually takes this body part into account thoroughly! Do you plan to make videos on other types of lady frames too? It would be great to see the differences visualized ^_^ Also, I dance with a partner who is about the same height as myself, even a bit shorter, so it would be great if you could give some additional tips for couples like ours =)

    Thank you Kora and Simeon for this video! I have definitely picked up some tips. Would you also consider doing a video on ladies left wrist and hand position in the ballroom hold especially when your partner is taller than you . How do you keep your wrist down? Mine always creeps up ( I blame the hight difference :)) is there any tricks or exercises you can recommend to keep the wrist down?

  • @SKDancesport

    That's a tough one to refer to without seeing exactly what you're doing. That seems like something that needs to be addressed in a private lesson. That being said, try putting a coin between the heel of your thumb and the heel of his thumb while dancing. This will give you immediate feedback if your wrist lifts.

    Question when you raise your right hip do you bend your left knee so the left hip drops? Or do you lift your foot slightly off the ground to raise your hip?

  • @SKDancesport

    @SKDancesport

    2 жыл бұрын

    Neither! Both of your knees should always be bent anyways. The right hip lifts as a consequence of stretching the upper body to the left and with a slight contraction in the right side.

    Kora, when I look at you next to Simeon, you don't look that short at all. Can you be specific re your height and his? And, when you dance in heels, how high a heel do you use and do you adjust accordingly?

  • @SKDancesport

    @SKDancesport

    3 жыл бұрын

    From Kora: I am 5'3", Simeon is 5'10" so we have a 7" height difference... which is pretty substantial in Ballroom terms! Competitively I wear a 2 1/2" heel, but remember that this only helps me when I'm on a flat foot. None of our dance shoes have a platform, so I'm always the same height when I'm on my toes, no matter the heel height. 😊

    Any tips on when the lady is the slightly taller one in the partnership?

  • @SKDancesport

    @SKDancesport

    The lady must bend into her knees more and the man actually must create a bigger left curve than normal in order to create proper balance. Richard and Janet Gleave were 8 time world champions back in the 1970s and Janet was slightly taller than Richard. Because of their height distribution, they are often credited for creating the "body" style of Standard Dancing, which shows the man creating more of a curve and extension than in other styles.

    I never understood why the couple has to be so desperately far apart from each other up top. ( bad breath?) It's something I can not stop thinking about when I watch these dances. Sorry. No, I'm not trying to make fun of you, I really want to know why. It looks very uncomfortable for her.

  • @SKDancesport

    @SKDancesport

    It has to do with the weight balance of the partnership. The head is a heavy appendage. By keeping the heads on the outside of the frame, the weight of the heads can be used in different ways to create momentum. The lady's head must be further away from the center of the partnership than the man's because, usually, the lady weighs less than the man. It can be uncomfortable, but it can also be a really amazing feel when you're able to throw your head weight and correctly use it to create momentum.
