Lady Galadriel: History & Powers Explained - Lord of the Rings Lore

Фильм және анимация

Lady Galadriel, the mightiest and fairest of all Elves in Middle-Earth. Foresighted, wise, and able to look into the minds of others with mercy and understanding, Galadriel counted as one of the greatest elves in will and spirit. Being essential in the strategical defense of Middle-Earth, Galadriel served as one of the chief opposers of the Dark Lord Sauron. Why was Galadriel so powerful? What was her magic? Did she really destroy Dol Guldur singlehandedly? And what would have happened if Galadriel claimed the One Ring? This video covers the entire history of Galadriel: from her birth during the years of the trees, to her exile from the Blessed Realm, to her travels in Middle-Earth, and at last her resistance against the shadow (Sauron). Other subjects that are covered, is Galadriel’s artifacts: the Mirror of Galadriel, the Phial of Galadriel, the meaning behind Galadriel’s gift to Gimli, and more. There’s also a special focus on Galadriel’s powers, explaining why she was one of the greatest elves in Middle-Earth.

It's like she said, she would definitely make those in the wrong pay at first; but it would not end there. Both her & Gandalf were tempted by it, especially Gandalf - I thought some of the thing's he went through certainly he could have used it's power; his feat with the Balrog was very lucky. Even Galadrial thought that Gandalf was very rash to even challenge it. The main reason for her power's was because of her ring, but it was only because Gandalf lost the One ring that she could make use of it. She reached a rare height in power mainly due to this. In some sense's, it may have been a good thing that the one ring wasn't destroyed straight away; because then the Elves could never have known what the 3 would be capable of.

Galadriel taking the One Ring would have been disasterous, not initially, as she would have (likely) been able to either exile or force Sauron's submission, but what then? Sure, she would then be a Dark Queen, but the Ring would continue and hence, Sauron would continue, being a Maia and not destroyed, but humbled, as he had been by the Numenoreans. She could lock him away...but...forever? She could use him to understand the use of the ring and understand how he had used power. So Galadrierl rules, Sauron endures, and he, being immortal, as she is, can await another opportunity.

Galadriel is probably the most important character in at least one way.... Had she taken the ring when Frodo offered it to her, she would no doubt have been corrupted. BUT she also would have become as powerful as Sauron. Maybe even more powerful. And she knew it. Sauron may have even known she took it the second she touched it. He would have known he was done and fled. That is why that scene in the film is so epic. It came off some what underwhelming because Gandalf had just fallen into shadow. But is was a major scene. I find it fascinating that Frodo offered the ring to three powerful people who had to deny thier desire to possess it. Gandalf, Galadriel and Aragorn. If anyone of those people took the ring, the fellowship would have failed. But they were all given the chance to possess it. But denied that desire. Such important parts of the whole epic story. It showed that there is good in the world as Sam said. And they were forced to prove it to us. And to themselves. Xendava

This video is excellent, but I disagree with the assertion that wearing one of the three increased Galadriel's desire to sail west. She says to Frodo that she wishes the one ring had never been found. This tells me she would have preferred to stay on in Middle Earth in HER unchanging realm. She sees no good outcome (for herself) to Frodo's quest. If he fails, Sauron wins; if he succeeds, the power of her ring is gone and her people, if they stay on in Lothlorien, will [quote] "dwindle to a rustic folk."

"It was at that time that she received Nenya, the White Ring, from Celebrimbor, and by its power the realm of Lórinand was strengthened and made beautiful; but its power upon her was great also and unforseen, for it increased her latent desire for the Sea and for return into the West, so that her joy in Middle-earth was diminished." I agree with you Jeff regarding that she sees no good outcome for herself, but Tolkien explictly stated that it increased her longing for the sea, and in another quote that she missed her people. But you have truly understood the quote you refer to on a deep level! Good job my friend :D

@@LoreOfTheRingsYT I know the quote you refer to. I just think it's contradictory on Tolkien's part, and I prefer to subscribe to the theory I believe to be indicated in the work he actually published himself, rather than the notes cobbled together by his son. On the other hand, both positions could be correct: the ring allows her to create a realm reminiscent of Arda, so by that very creation a longing is stirred in her for Arda. Still, she gives no indication (in LOTR) that she is happy with the destruction of her realm and is glad to go into the west. She is not leaving Lothlorien willingly, only out of necessity.

Galadriel was said to be the greatest Noldor aside from Feanor. She was said to be the greatest threat to Sauron, she could also perceive his mind while fending him off. She sent mist to protect the ancestors of the Rohirrim from Dol Guldur, she took down Dol Guldur. She studied under Melian, Yavanna and Aule. She comes from the 3 houses of the high elves. She is one of the oldest elves (second or third generation). She saw the light of Valinor. I believe, that as of the third age, she was certainly the most powerful elf in middle earth and in Aman.

Tolkein rarely goes into detail about the lives of women in his works.... I'm saddened a bit by this. It would seem that Galadriel was the only female of the Noldor to duplicate what only Aule, Feanor, Ernardhil and Celebrimbor were able to do.... capture light. She could capture or encase light.... in fact, she was the ONLY one who could capture light in water... though she captured the light of the Silmaril of Earendil in a glass or crystal vial. In this way I think she outdid the others. We should remember that Varda created light, and Aule created the lamps.... and it was from the spilling of this light, which was collected by the Valar as best they could, that enabled Yavanna and Nienna to bring to life the two trees of Valinor... ALL WOMEN. They were different times that Tokein wrote in.... and he did not go much into detail about women and the impact they had or could have....

Galadriel is one of my favorite in the Tolkien legendarium. I know what he means when he says Tolkien had different version of her life. I suggest to read the chapter Galadriel and Celeborn in the Unfinished Tales book. It has a couple of versions of what and where they started. In it Galadriel fights for her mother's people The Teleri elves who were attacked and many killed by Feanor's people so the could steal their boats. It said Galadriel hated Feanor and she despised all he stood for. When She left Eregion to go to Lothlorien she went through Khazad Dum, but Celeborn would not go into the mines as he did not trust the dwarves as he was there when they killed King Thingol and stole the Simaril even though it was not Durin's Folk that committed the theft and murder.

How come Celebrimbor didn't trust dwarves when Eregion elvensmiths collaborated with them many times? The star of Feanor house was on the doors of Moria ffs Celebrimbor wrote on it and put the star there. Also, Galadriel maybe didn't like Feanor but to say she hated everything he stood for is simply not true. She didn't like his arrogance and ill temper but he was the mightiest innovator, craftsman and lore master, why would she stand against that? After all, she was intrigued by his famous speech that called Noldor to leave Valinor because she wanted to explore and to find place where she could rule on her own.

@@likac92009 I am telling you what it says in The Unfinished Tales where there is two versions of the story. It also says she met her husband Celeborn in Erresea instead of Doriath, but in both versions because of Feanor's MURDER to steal the ships of Galadriel's mother's people she despised him for it. It also says because she refused to give Feanor one of her tresses that they were "unfriends" from then onwards. I never mentioned Celebrimbor I said Celeborn would not go through Khazad Dum because the dwarves had killed King Thingol. Even in FOTR Lord Celeborn was harsh with Gimli and it took Galadriel's words of comfort to mellow Celeborn out. Remember Celeborn was a Teleri elf not a Noldor like Celebrimbor was.

I love the story of Eorl's march south to help Cirion Steward of Gondor and how he saved Gondor in the nick of time. On the way as the Eorlingas came nigh onto Dol Guldur a silvery mist issued out in front of them from the Golden Wood that was covered in silvery mist and Eorl was not frightened. He yelled out, "Ride on" He commanded "There is no other way to take. After so long a road shall we be held back by a river mist?" As they went on they saw the silvery mist pushing back the glooms of Dol Guldur and so they went further on then their horses and themselves were reinvigorated as if they had just set out and they hauled ass with the hooves of their horses making almost no sound and arrived to the battle of Celebrant just in time and slaughtered the enemies of Gondor slamming into their real flank. The Gondorian guide riding next to Eorl named Borandir remarked to Eorl that, "The Lady of the Golden Wood is on our side it seems." He remarked when the silvery mist turned out to be helpful. Galadriel was indeed on their side. She was fully aware of what the fall of Gondor would mean for all of Middle Earth including Lothlorien, but more than that she knew she must help the good peoples against the evil of Sauron. Cirion gave a kingly gift to Eorl by giving them the land of Calenardhon and more. Eorl was almost shocked beyond speech at the scope of the gesture of Cirion. Read the account in the Unfinished Tales of Cirion And Eorl..

In Nick Hodges History Buffs review of Elizabeth: The Golden Age, there's a joke where he uses the clip of Galadriel saying, "In place of a dark lord you would have a queen! Not dark but beautiful and terrible as the dawn! Treacherous as the sea!" to the Spanish ambassadors, and his editor blended it rather seamlessly. Believe it or not I suggested that joke to Nick years in advance if he ever reviewed that movie and thankfully he went for it. The reason why I suggested that was because both movies had Cate Blanchett and I was like, "You gotta make at least one Lord of the Rings joke in either Elizabeth (1998) or its sequel Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). It would be like reviewing Cromwell (1970) and not making a Star Wars joke or even a Harry Potter joke because that movie starred Alec Guinness and Richard Harris.

She refused to give Feanor one of her tresses, that is not a single hair, but part of a weave, but she was as smart as Feanor, but wiser and she saw something crooked in him that made her refuse. She along with Celeborn did not "hide" in Doriath. After the murder of King Thingol they left and went to the south to what became Amroth, named for her son. Yes the story of Nimrodel and Amroth was about her son. Galadriel told her brother that the Elves could not defeat Morgoth and she included all the elves not just the Noldor. Remember she was the wisest elf in Middle Earth and of all the Noldor even the Noldor that remained in Aman. She learned much while living in Valinor and while living with Melian the Maia. When she cast down the walls of Dol Guldur she used her own power not the ring Nenya for that was not its power. Galadriel was the most powerful elf of the Noldor.

@@MountainFisher She thought they couldn't beat Morgoth, just splendid. if people in 1939 and 1940 had the same thought process as Galadriel, Hitler would be still ruling Europe. Maybe if she, as powerful as she was, helped her brothers and in the process convinced Thingol to stop hiding behind his wife's skirt, if both him and Melian helped Noldor in their battle, Morgoth wouldn't be able to defend himself for too long. About the power, she was the most powerful in the third age for sure, she had very many years to improve on her knowledge and life experience brings wisdom, but she did noting mention worthy while in Valinor.

@@likac92009 It is a story not history. Also she was right, the elves, men and dwarves could not defeat Morgoth as the story proved when Earendil went to the Valar to ask for their help part of his argument was for the Valar to come help before Morgoth enslaved all of Middle Earth.

Not sure Galadriel would've been able to reach Sauron status because a) her starting position is weaker (Sauron is one of the strongest Maiar, been practicing under Morgoth for a long time and already has an army of orcs) and b) she can't control the one ring as well as Sauron can, because he made it and he incorporated a huge part of himself in it. In case of her trying to rule with the ring, elves of Lothlorien would leave and join Elrond in Rivendel so she would have to build an army from the scratch. I think free races of elves, men and dwarves led by Gandalf, Glorfindel, Elrond, Aragon and dwarf leaders would be able to defeat her. It would be entirely possible that Valar would allow a few more resurrected Eldar like Glorfindel to come to Middle Earth again to help Elrond.

Well remember that wasn't the point. Sauron 's power had feined over the Ages, and without the One Ring he was separated from a good portion of his fea. This put him in a dangerous predicament with Galadriel because her power had manifested over the Ages and especially during the Third Age. Galadriel's peak in power wielding both Nenya and the One Ring would have still given her the power to overthrow Sauron if she could keep herself hidden from him.

Why do assume she could do this without the ring?? You have no knowledge of her without the ring. Just like elrond and gandolf... Who both had, and used, rings of power. "I suppose this is what you would call elvin magic" ...not ANY of the things we normaly associate with elvin magic but the pool frodo looks in to see the future destruction of the shire... If the pool and its prophecy are what you would call elvin magic, what then are all the other things we usually assume are elvin magic? Those are the rings

@@brotherjongrey9375 The rings only did two things: Slowed the decay of time and enhanced the natural powers of the possessor, and they were not meant to use during war. Elf lords revealed in wrath date back to the First Age before the Rings of Power. Galadriel doesn't need a Ring of Power to display her metamorphosis.

If she had taken the 1 ring her connection to the upper realms would have been severed. At first she wouldn't have been too concerned because of the power she would have gained. It would've intoxicated her and delighted her to have such a freedom to shape the world as she would want it in her image. But unbeknownst to her her wisdom would've become short sighted not being able to see the longer term consequences of actions. In time all that she had done begins to turn into conflicts betrayals and unintended unrest and unhappiness for all her subjects. Nothing but rebellion and sadness would overwhelm all until she realizes her mistake. She has a choice..either destroy the ring in the fires of mount doom or be forever cut off from the blessed realms. She does destroy the ring. But she has become so corrupted she reamains in exile for centuries. Her lands suffer unimaginable hardships until slowly the wizards and elves begin to bring back light and peace. But she is captured and remains a prisoner for thousands of years always conflicted about the ring. Another wise lady...her daughter takes her place and rejects all her mother had done.

My thoughts on the Mirror of Galadriel are based partially on the name. Mirrors show reflections. So I do think that it simply reflects what she sees for others to see. Maybe the person looking in the mirror means they’re close to her and she can zoom in on their thoughts and questions to direct the mirror, but as it seems tied to her and not them, it seems just a reflection of her power. For instance, after she passed to the West, I’d propose that the mirror wouldn’t work, because it’s power source is gone. Like a computer monitor with no computer to direct pixels to form images. It’s just headcanon though at this point. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The movies and a lot of fan fiction and maybe this video remade Galadriel look more powerful than Elrond or even Gandalf, and that's absurd. She was powerful compared to other elves because of Nenya (which Tolkien said was less powerful than Elrond's ring Vilya) but at no point is she the equal to a maia like Gandalf or Melian. She's revered in the story mainly because of her age and experience, not power. I dislike the Dol Guldur scene from the Hobbit where she's portrayed to be the decisive figure in ousting Sauron, it doesn't line up with everything else Tolkien wrote about her.
