Lac La Croix Grand Slam Spring Fishing Trip Part 1 | BWCA Walleye, Lake Trout, Pike and Bass

#bwcafishing #fishingopener #walleye
Joe and I head to Lac La Croix, the largest lake in the the Boundary Waters in search of two things: Monster Lake Trout and the BWCA spring fishing Grand Slam. Our number one goal is to catch a personal best Lake Trout on LLC, which is known for large lake trout. Number two goal is to catch the BWCA grand slam, which is all four major game species: Lake Trout, Walleye, Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike.
Part 1 covers the first two days of our trip to Lac La Croix. On day one - Minnesota Statewide Fishing Opener - we see favorable weather and get into a bunch of fish, one of them being my personal best Lake Trout at 38" and somewhere around 20lbs!
We have gorgeous weather, find a 5-star campsite to use as a basecamp, enjoy some spectacular meals over the campfire and start the trip with a bang on our first day, catching one giant lake trout.

    @@PurpleFerret excellent! Sounds like a great plan. If the fishing is slow on Agnes, I’d move on to LLC quickly-tons of great campsites and excellent fishing. The water is always a couple of degrees cooler there, too, so if Agnes is slow it may help change the bite/fish mood. I was in Quetico this week and the water is warm and the blueberries are popping. Find moving water and you’ll find fish. Have a blast! Wear your lifejackets!

    It was such a cool experience that most travelers never take advantage of. To be the first on the portage/lake is incredible. Not to mention the wildlife, sunrise, calm, etc. I always tell people that if you’re starting your BWCA trip after 8am you’re doing it wrong, preferably right before the sun comes up. It also helps with finding a campsite.

    If you plan on catching monsters, don’t want the bulk/hassle of a net, or do a lot of catch and release, I feel it’s the safest and most effective option for the safety and health of the fish and the fisher. You’ll love it!

    Have done well over the years in bwca chasing pike, walleye, bass, up to trophy size, but never seriously targeted lakers. This year mid May, big lakers is the number one priority. I have geared up for the task: MH rod with 25lb braid, 25lb fluoro for leaders, and 1 ounce inline weights if needed. For trolling I have a variety of colors (mainly silver/white/blue/purple) of shad raps, tail dancers, and reef runners - max depth of those is around 30 ft without extra weight. I also have small (Cleo), medium (dr.), and large (Williams) spoons up to 8 inches in chrome, blue, brass. For sharpshooting I have bucktail jigs, tube jigs, swim bait jigs with 4,6, and 8 inch paddle tails, a couple blue chrome jigging raps (because of your vids). What am I missing? We will have electronics and somewhat know the area. Do you still use extra trolling weights in May when water temps allow them to be shallow? What is your go to depth to target during that time of year? I’m so anxious to get out there and put the gear and research to the test!

  • @therealfarwater

    @therealfarwater

    2 жыл бұрын

    It sounds like you have it pretty well covered! In my experience, if you bring any more tackle you won't get a chance to use it and it will just be extra weight on the portages. With fishing opener being pushed back in the last couple of years it is very unlikely - even in a late ice out year like this one is shaping up to be- that you will find trout up super shallow. I like to start trolling medium depth crankbaits (husky jerks, deep down husky jerks, shad raps, flicker shads, etc) or spoons without weights on those first breaks near shoreline in 12-25' of water. If I am not finding trout, I will move out over deeper water in search of suspended trout or offshore structure like points/reefs adjacent really deep water. Keep an eye on the sonar - if you are noticing lone fish out over deep water - look for a pattern (what depth they are swimming) and try to match that depth or just above with your bait. Likely that is the thermocline and the area they are hunting, just below in the colder more oxygenated water. If you're not marking fish or noticing they are much deeper, add the lead weights to increase your running depth 10-15'. If that doesn't start generating hits and you're not graphing fish on sonar, that likely means they are hugging bottom in deeper water. Look for the edges of reefs, points and saddles where steep declines in topography meet flat bottom in 40-60' of water and start jigging. If the wind is too strong and you can't control the boat or you're drifting faster than 1mph, jigging on bottom is going to be nearly impossible without a really heavy bait. You can certainly jig anywhere in the water column and still find trout, but I like to be bouncing off bottom or 5-15' off bottom. Don't be discouraged if you don't find the trout right away and don't be discouraged to try different areas/methods until you find the fish. Once you find the fish, stick to that structure/depth in other areas of the lake or park on top of it and vertical jig. Trout do roam, but there are generally 2-3 areas on a lake that will hold the greatest number and largest lake trout - they can be tricky to find but when you find one it pays to spend time working the spot over. Best of luck! Let me know how it goes!

    @@therealfarwater as promised here is the report. We were in 5/19-22 targeting trout and other species. We only caught a few trout - biggest was 33.25 inches. One fish was surprisingly caught on a scatter rap in about 10-15 fow while targeting walleyes. The others were caught with tail dancers thru areas of 40-60 fow with bait balls. Trout were mostly marked under and around the bait balls up to 30 ft. They were easiest to find but hardest to stay on top of on 5/20 with 15mph winds blowing us around. 5/21 was calmer and trout were harder to find but mostly right on bottom. Hooked a big trout with your chrome/blue jigging rap, but it managed to spit the bait after a few seconds of big head shakes. All in all, we trolled with shad raps, reef runners, tail dancers and spoons. Jigged with tubes, swim baits, and raps. Next time will add more weight to stay closer to bottom for trolling spoons and sharp shoot with the rap - love how that feels vertical jigging over marks. Outside of trout, only able to move 1 pike ~35 inches from shallow bay but it wouldn’t chew. Never caught or saw another pike. SMB caught just a hair under 21 inches was a treat. Walleyes were plentiful 16-22.5 inches near moving water. Learned lots about trout fishing and looking forward to the next chance!

  • @therealfarwater

    @therealfarwater

    Thank you! Good for you, LLC is an excellent fishery and I've stayed at a lot of wonderful campsites there. The water temps shouldnt be too high with the mild summer we've been having, I'm guessing you will see surface temps in the low 70's which should allow you to target lake trout with deep diving lures (25'+). I would also spend time vertical jigging with baits heavy enough (1oz+) to get down to bottom in 40-80' of water. My favorites are jigging raps (of course), bucktail jigs and tube jigs. If you get a nice calm wind, I would spend time vertical jigging while drifting to cover large areas of water until you start finding fish at a specific depth and/or location. White has worked well for me on LLC, I assume it is because the big predator fish are feeding on ciscos and whitefish. This time of year, I always look for structure that tops out in 25-45' of water directly adjacent to super deep holes (100+). Best of luck!

  • @therealfarwater

    2 жыл бұрын

    Bringing a net that’s large and safe enough for a fish like this just isn’t practical on a canoe trip and a net that’s too small will just injure the fish or make it much more difficult to land, not to mention the pain it is to deal with treble hooks caught in a net. I stopped carrying nets on overnight BWCA trips a while ago and never looked back. Most fish I can safely land by hand, the larger ones are easily and more safely controlled by the Boga grip.
