Labour: Is the party over? (Panorama) - BBC News

With the Labour leadership election less than a week away, BBC deputy political editor John Pienaar asks if Labour is on the brink of self-destruction. Panorama spent the summer in Brighton, on the frontline for the battle for the soul of Labour, where local activists slog it out for control of the party. In one corner, Momentum fights off ugly allegations of bullying, anti-Semitism and hard-left entryism. In the other, the party's 'moderates' fear election annihilation and deselection. The programme follows both sides through the ups and downs of the campaign and finds neither side in the mood for compromise.

***** Liverpool still has not recovered from what Thatcher did - not fully opposed by Kinnock. The Tories are on still on their hate campaign against the city still to this day. The Tories left Liverpool off HS2, when a HS2 line will be only 16 miles away. Neighbours Manchester are having a 7.5 mile tunnel bored into the city to accommodate HS2. The economies and populations of both cities are about equal. Kinnock will not visit the city of Liverpool. The only real opposition to Thatcher was Liverpool.

Balls. Labour under Foot was never gonna win. It had a third party to contend with including right wing MPs who had left the Labour party. In nine years, Kinnock only managed to raise the Labour vote by 6.5 points despite a split Tory party, a second Thatcher recession and the poll tax. And to whom? The inspiring John Major. This is no longer 1983, or 1994. It is a very different age. Thatcherism and the low wage, easy credit age has collapsed. In 1994, a young person seeking uni education and a starter home needed £50K of debt, today he/she needs over half a million. Many older, and lucky to be home owner people are completely unaware of the mess as they have been bailed out. But how long are bailouts gonna last?

5 years later and Labour is more divided than ever before. It is basically 3 distinct parties operating under one coalition, the left, soft left and centre, and many people in those different factions clearly hate each other more than they hate the Tories. The Tories are also a coalition and at least 2 separate parties under one umbrella, and they also have rifts, but not to the same extent and they are better at uniting at elections / to ensure that they win / retain power.

Yeah well the thing is you have to accept my statement as factual, whereas you're presumably referring to bolshevism which funnily enough I don't have an affinity to so I will never accept that charge. Poverty, imperialist wars, slavery, pollution, cataclysmic consumption of the planet's resources are all still ongoing and causing millions of deaths every year. They can all be linked to the dark exploitative side of capitalism. Socialism in various forms has been implemented into capitalist structures and led to a lot of positive facets of life that we take for granted such as human rights, workers rights, social mobility, healthcare, holidays, education, transport available for the masses etc...

Somozusi When I speak of accomplishment, I refer to even modest accomplishments, such as , not employed by a government agency, such as relying not on your government pension, but in fact, developing ones own retirement strategy. Further, one can add accomplishments as simple as, raising children who are self reliant. And still further, being able to look beyond a government mandated 20 cent minimize raise. There are many ways one can be accomplished and for me, none, none, none, rely on the government to give them to me.

43% of our entire work force is on less than a living wage. It's not a problem of how people are raising their kids, but the wider economy. Based on the current governments budget policy, we will be giving the same amount of tax breaks to the 20% of households as the bottom 20% by 2020. 80+% of the current governments financial policy benefits those earning 100,000 pounds a year or more, while at the same time they have tried to increase taxes on the self employed and cut disability benefits. Labour is the party of people who give a shit about people which want a better life for everyone, not just those able to get the right helping hands.
