Labor shortage? Florida man applies for 60 jobs, gets 1 interview

The supposed labor shortage is a frustrating concept for some job seekers who say they're applying but getting nowhere. A Florida man's job search is getting attention after he says he applied to 60 entry-level positions but only got one interview.

You sound like someone who has never worked in their life and believes the bs that theres no jobs. If you are applying for a construction site you need to demonstrate youre physically fit so you put your hobbies as going to the gym etc. If youre applying to work in sales at all you need to be able to talk to people and sell things so going out and meeting new people or even saying that you like to party and meet new people would be something to add. If you are applying for an admin job in a small company you need to demonstrate you know how to use a computer / technology . So gaming or watching netflix would be a suitable hobby. Like it really isnt difficult to understand, and the issue with "theres no jobs" is people like you not understanding how to actually apply for jobs and sell yourself properly.

That was almost five years ago now and every job she’s applied for with her skillset tells her she is overqualified and asking too much as far as benefits. The only work she’s been able to find has either been temp work or me being able to find her spots wherever I may be working at the time just to help keep her afloat. The fact a corporation can throw away 20 years of hard work over a bullshit accusation and then for work to be so hard to come across afterward disgusts me. That is absolutely the truth for many businesses. The company I work for has been under seriously understaffed for more than 2 years now. We have been working with a skeleton crew and the owners don’t really seem to want to change anything. Why would they pay 10 people to do a job when 3 people are doing it? We are stretched beyond thin and the only ones suffering from this labor shortage are those of us who do the work of multiple people. The owners are reaping the rewards of our hard work by lining their pockets with the money that should be going into payroll. Why stay? Because we have mouths to feed and mortgages to pay. And as this video demonstrated despite the number of help wanted signs/ads out there the actual jobs don’t really seem to exist.

I have a feeling these employers are not following up due to being overqualified. I had this problem for a while, because employers kept saying “you’re overqualified and we can’t take that risk” so I took my degree off my resume and only included my entry level positions and two days later I had a job. So much for the idea that going to college and getting your degree makes getting a job easier.

That was in a different time when it was not so risky to be honest in employment decisions. There is a shortage of people for available jobs, of that I’m certain. However, a shortage does not mean that any warm body can expect to fill any particular position. As you said, adjust your resume to the particular position you are applying to. I did not.

Thankfully I had a man and a woman that were each 25+ years older than me do the interview and they were both nice to me, I had all days except Sundays available because that was the one day of the week my current part-time job gave me, and they said they wanted to hire me but Costco starts everyone off at 15 hours a week and they need me on Sundays. Saturday’s and Fridays and every week day was not enough and they needed me to quit my other job. Then my car broke down in the parking lot and my dad refused to send a tow truck and I had $30 in my bank account and couldn’t repair it. Well not all jobs are. I actually left my previous job because literally no one was applying and anyone that did they left in days or weeks after being hired. I was at my previous job for 13 years. We've never had a hiring issue previously. It's slowly gotten worse. The company is a contracted out cleaning service and we had roughly 250-300 people, might've been more than that but I know the president of our company, Tim, started out at the bottom of the company and worked his way up. He never wanted ownership of the business. It's just not his thing. He never outright told me directly but spoke with several managers about how he wanted to step away from it. At this point he'd been president 7+ years and just this last year, we merged with a company that was essentially an umbrella style corporation for contracted out services for schools. It was a smart business move. In the last year though, Tim didn't do as much to solve any problems with the company nor did he really push to hold any employees. We had employees that stuck with the company for over 30 years. Many left because they saw how much the company stopped caring and didn't hold employees accountable. We recently found an employee smoking in the school and no one fired them. We found several cigarettes and ash everywhere for months. Tried reporting it and nothing happened. The company managers are too afraid to fire anyone because no one currently wants to come into the company so they're stuck with shitty employees that do this. Tim has since left the company. This was his last year and he found another president to step up within the new company. They tried so hard to keep so many employees but tried way too late. I have years of problems with this old job but I stuck with it because I couldn't find anything better. I ended up finding a new job that was not only 10 minutes away from our house but it was also a $5/hr pay increase. It's zero stress and absolutely lovely to go into work every day. They also cut people's hours which incentivizes them to not care as much! Let's say I'm working at McDonald's for $10 an hour and I'm getting 8 hours a day I'm going to be more inclined to work hard because that's $80 a day But if I'm only getting 4 hours a day that's only $40 And they only have 5 days available that's around $200 a week before taxes! I know tons of people who are working two jobs and still qualify for food stamps! There is no labor shortage! The hiring process and recruiting practices have been broken for years. This isn't just true for entry-level and associate level jobs. It's true at mid-senior through director level jobs as well. Hiring managers and recruiters are passing up competent and qualified candidates simply because they don't line up perfectly with the job description when most of the technical skills can be learned quickly on the job. Instead they hold out for candidates that look great on paper, but have no guarantee of success when it comes to more critical non-specific skills like communication, problem-solving, critical-thinking, curiosity, and the drive to learn.

Sometimes the problem is that companies don't want to bother to help train and teach new employees. The grocery store I work at, we finally got a new cashier, who only learned the register for like a day and half; or rather, watched how it's done, and tried it out for maybe 20-ish minutes at most with the other cashier next to her; and has admitted she's still not comfortable being 100% on her own. But management can't be bothered with that, and there are days when I see her just bagging. God forbid that someone needs more time to absorb and process everything. Especially when they want to learn and when the store needs more help.

What the rich people are saying right now is that the poor entry level people are too lazy to work right now, which is causing many positions to remain open. However this news report shows that that might not be true if businesses are turning down more than qualified candidates. Honestly I think subpar, slow customer service due to having very few employees is going to be the new norm (and by that I mean it’s gonna be worse than before). Get your customers acclimated with poor quality service, hire less people, save money while still earning profits. At least that’s my theory.

Now what is the probability of me having researched the subject for my Master thesis 12 years before? Twelve years ago it was just an academic subject in SCM! The job had the exact title. So what is the probability of me living in this small, not-so-developed town were this job was posted for this corporation? They never called. They had also this hiring digital service for applications, which is most definitely sorting out the CVs via some algorithms. What i experience as an employer is an abundance of people who are only filling out applications to keep their extended unemployment benefits rolling in, and if they've already been kicked off the government doll they will only work long enough to be eligible for unemployment again then they quit and get back on unemployment. The unemployment offices are so backed up that employers can't even get through to file a rebuttal before these people are approved to sit on their asses on the tax payers dime. I know there's good people that just want to work, but they're really hard to find.

Employees should do a bit of malicious compliance, understand their job description, rights, and ask for appropriate pay, dont do anything outside the job description, thats a good way to get help, is by all employees being on the same page, demanding extra help. How is that different than other labor? I’m pretty sure society would fall apart without skilled workers too. Being an unskilled worker does not mean you are special. It means you have put minimal effort into your personal development, and are therefore easily replaceable. I am not saying everyone should be a doctor. For example, my dad went back to school in his 30’s for machining. He has had an excellent job for the past 10 years. However, he and half the company was recently let go. Initially I was worried for him, but you would not believe the amount of companies that were literally chasing him down. I imagine there is more happening behind the scene. As a long term labor supply shortage is coming to an end, an abnormally high amount of people are applying for the same jobs at the same time. Meaning that supply is up, and it’s harder to get a job. Especially if you don’t speak English well like this lady.

People are tired of wages going up in some instances, such as fast food, but then hours go down so you're still in the same boat. People are sick and tired of hearing about fortune 500's that just bought their 4th yacht while their employees have to collect food stamps to eat. People are sick and tired of Congress calling them lazy and not wanting to work when they are out there trying to find work that can support their family in TODAYS economy, not the 50's. It's catching up with them and they don't like it so they need to lie about a labor shortage and pay Congress to spewing that lie for them.

@@daebak_hana there's also alot of people with little to no experience in any trade or field who want wages they are not worth. But they don't understand starting low and working their way up. Laziness and entitlement are big issues in the work place. Men today have poor work ethic.

As a employer I also know the costs of hiring the wrong person. Cost of extra training, lost productivity, quality, and eventually the employee leaving. It took my wife and I 3 years, a dozen "bodies", and 6 months of solid training to form the right team. So as an employer I also look beyond just having to pay someone, I also care about the total cost, customer experience, team morale, and my company's sustainability.

Job interviews are a giant waste of time and an alternate way for a company to discriminate against you. I've been to several interviews and can say it doesn't matter what I say, it matters how they perceive you. That's a problem, workers should be hired according to their job skills, not to job interview skills.

They use hiring agencies now. I had one interviewer talk about how good my credentials were but he kept interviewing me until he found out I was black. Then didn't respond.

Many of the companies use the same hiring software. Back in my days as a big box and restaurant manager we used a company called unicrew at two different businesses. Based on how the applicant would answer the question they would be put in categories of green, yellow, and red. At the store level we were not even allowed to interview applicants that scored in the red. You litterally could not even pull up the interview or hiring paperwork for someone in the red.

Shady company tactics: pay just enough to keep em quiet, “offer” benefits but don’t let them qualify for them by only providing part time hours to employees

Crazy thing is, my mom was working full-time hours plus overtime for over a year but was registered as a part-time employee 🤡 The company was/is struggling to get and keep employees (you work in a group home cooking for, cleaning, giving medicine to, lifting, etc. disabled people who are often almost fully paralyzed and the $12/hour definitely wasn’t comparable to the amount of work). Thankfully, they’ve raised the hourly pay and registered her as a full-time employee but I just find it all so ridiculous. I said from the beginning they’d get more employees if they paid decently.

I took a $12 an hour job at McDonald's. That was the 176th place I applied at since April when I became fully vaccinated. I only got two other offers. One was a part time job with a crazy schedule that would make it impossible for me to hold another job at $11 an hour AND was highly technical and required 10 years of technician experience and the other was a 40 hour a week job at minimum wage that I had to wait a year to get insurance. At least if I am going to wait a year for crappy insurance I will make another dollar an hour. Still looking but so far no interviews. One place advertises "DESPERATELY NEED HELP!" but refuses to respond when I submit an application indicating 18 years of trade experience and they continue to advertise that same fake job weeks later.
