So I've been into cnc (computer numerical control) stuff like 3d printing for quite awhile. I've cut my teeth on additive machines like plastic fdm and resin sla printers. More recently I got into subtractive manufacturing with my diode laser engraver/cutter. The next step in the learning process is cnc cutting/milling but the machines tend to be pretty big, dangerous and expensive.
That's where this kit I found comes in. The cut area is only 30x18 cm so the entire footprint is smaller than even my fdm's. Since it's pretty small it'll be easier for me to make an enclosure to make it safer. It also comes with an offline controller that connects to wifi and can run jobs saved to an sd card which will be very useful. Finally last but not least I found a kit that was on sale for just under $130! It was the perfect excuse for me to grab one to try out. In this video we assemble the machine and do a few test cuts to get a handle on the process. Let's hope everything goes well and I don't regret the time and money I've spent on it ...

    If you manage to produce pieces that are (or can be made) usable, without ruining any end mills, you're off to a good start. Tips for drastically improving the quality and overall experience of milling acrylic, based on own experience: 1) Reduce flute count. Single flute is the best option. Other option is to reduce RPM (losing torque, not good) or to increase feed rate. 2) Increase feed rate (X&Y) if possible, I don't think these machines can move TOO FAST for acrylic even when using single flute end mill. If you see melting in the corners, but not on longer straight lines, you may want to increase acceleration (Grbl configuration with some $=xx commands). 3) Manage chip evacuation (vacuum/compressed air) to avoid melting already milled chips. Switching to single flute end mill also helps with chip evacuation. But like said, you are off to a good start. Hopefully we will see some CNC projects in the future!

    Right? I'm plenty happy with the hardware, it just turns out that there really aren't any good free CAM software like there are for 3D printing and even laser tools. Everything I find is either abandonware, barely functional, severely crippled free trial, expensive/subscription, or annoyingly cloud based.

    Hey man, try with cooling down a bit while milling in acrylic with compressed air - it worked for me ! :) The chips are flying off the cut and the bit is cold so it is not melting the chips.
