Lyrics:
The sea
La mer
That we see dancing
Qu'on voit danser
Along the clear gulfs
Le long des golfes clairs
Has reflections of silver
A des reflets d'argent
The sea
La mer
Changing reflections
Des reflets changeants
Under the rain
Sous la pluie
The sea
La mer
In the summer sky
Au ciel d'été
Confuses its white sheep
Confond ses blancs moutons
With angels so pure
Avec les anges si purs
The sea
La mer
Azure shepherdess, infinite
Bergère d'azur, infinie
See
Voyez
Near the ponds
Près des étangs
These big wet reeds
Ces grands roseaux mouillés
See
Voyez
These white birds
Ces oiseaux blancs
And these rusty houses
Et ces maisons rouillées
The sea
La mer
Rocked them
Les a bercés
Along the clear gulfs
Le long des golfes clairs
And a love song
Et d'une chanson d'amour
The sea
La mer
Cradled my heart for life
A bercé mon cœur pour la vie
The sea
La mer
That we see dancing
Qu'on voit danser
Along the clear gulfs
Le long des golfes clairs
Has reflections of silver
A des reflets d'argent
The sea
La mer
Changing reflections
Des reflets changeants
Under the rain
Sous la pluie
The sea
La mer
In the summer sky merges
Au ciel d'été confond
Its white sheep
Ses blancs moutons
With angels so pure
Avec les anges si purs
The sea
La mer
Azure shepherdess, infinite
Bergère d'azur, infinie
See (see)
Voyez (voyez)
Near ponds (near ponds)
Près des étangs (près des étangs)
These big wet reeds (see these reeds)
Ces grands roseaux mouillés (voyez ces roseaux)
See (see)
Voyez (voyez)
These white birds (these white birds)
Ces oiseaux blancs (ces oiseaux blancs)
And these rusty houses (la-la-la-la-la-la)
Et ces maisons rouillées (la-la-la-la-la-la)

Le long des golfes clairs

Charles Trenet was inspired by Étang de Thau near Montpellier. It is not a sea but he had this idea in a train while seeing the Etang. It is really beautiful and inspiring. If you go to France I advised you to visit Sète, Palavas,... Cannes is awful😅

Yes for me it is also about reflection. I can see myself in 1946 or 1947, just after WWII and everything breaths great hope for a new future but when we look at the sea we realise it was there always and it was there when that war happened. The sea saw it all even with the bright sun on a clear day somewhere in 1947 the sound f small waves crushing on the shore seems like the faint voices of those not here to enjoy that bright future. That is a bit what this song does to me.

This song always brings me tears of joy...life is hard, you can lose it all at once...changing like the sea but...damn it's beautiful...THANK YOU GOD FOR MUSIC,FOR THE SEA AND FOR LIFE!!!
This for me is the most archetypical French chanson ever. It speaks mediterranean, it speaks joie de vivre, it speaks summer days, blue skies, dejeuners sur l'herbe, but also 1950s and 60s flower-power, and always small tear from how time may passes: a la recherche du temps perdus. This is France in nutshell in all its aspects.

Emocionante siempre esta canción
I first heard this song on Mr Bean’s Holiday and his whole attitude on the holiday resonated with me. Before COVID I would regularly travel to France, being from the UK it’s only a one hour trip away on the ferry. I would visit every two-three months, I would not sleep the night before I go as I was too excited! I would leave my home at 4am to travel to Dover where upon arrival I’d enjoy a curry then sit on the pebble beach listened to the sea come in and out and lay under the stars feeling my anxiety and stress wash away with the waves. A real sense of calm came over me. The following morning I would walk to the port full of excitement and stand on the deck watching the White Cliffs of Dover and just listen to the sound of the sea before I would get breakfast. As France came into view my excitement becomes uncontrollable and I would disembark as a foot passenger and head into town a mere 15 minutes away. I’d take a nice deep breath and listen to local French radio on my phone as I walk into town (I’d always record it to enjoy back home) and I’d stop into my favorite bakery for a cake, something different every time before picking somewhere to stay for a couple of days and off I went. I’d party with the locals, eat local food and buy more cheese than humanly possible. On the day I am sailing back to the UK I’d go food shopping; cheese, jam, sweets for my nephews and buy food to enjoy on the way back home such as a quiche. I’d visit this antique shop for something old and nice. I’d book my ferry back at 4pm but end up pushing it back to 11pm! On the way back to the port I’d walk very slowly and enjoy the sights, the sounds, the smells and I’d stand on the ferry deck listening to French radio until the signal went and France was no longer in sight - by then I was half way through the journey. I’d always treat it as if it was the last time I was going, you never know how life can turn on you.
Classics never get old, I'm young but I love this song and others

Because of some comments I see here, I have to say that: The song known in the United States as "Beyond the Sea" is an adaptation of this song, "La Mer" by Charles Trénet (1913-2001). "La Mer" was released in 1945.
