LA Made Presents: James Spooner in Conversation With Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill)

"We love punk, that’s why we want to change it." - Kathleen Hanna
In the 90s, Kathleen Hanna began a feminist dialogue with "Riot Grrrl" and her band Bikini Kill. A decade later, James Spooner sought to point the spotlight toward the Black and POC experience with his film Afro-Punk.
The punk rock community gives its members the agency to center their stories. For the first time, join these punk pioneers in conversation. Using Spooner’s award-winning graphic novel memoir The High Desert as a jumping point, he and Hanna will discuss their lives of resistance and reaction within punk. Followed by a special live performance by the band Sextile.
Sextile combines the raw political energy of 70’s punk with intricately sophisticated structures from 80’s post-punk and synthwave. The genre-bending project has a devout following in the Los Angeles underground, and currently consists of members, Brady Keehn, Melissa Scaduto and Cameron Michel.
