I’ve been going for 6 years and I can’t even do that. I do take piano as more of a hobby though so I never gave all of my energy to the piano like Ryan did but still very impressive

Yeah he didn't really "learn" them so to speak. He memorized the exact notes through practice. He didn't learn the theory and could not actually improvise the things that sound improvised. That would be impossible and would take years. After 10 years I am close to that level, but still not there yet with improvisation and understanding harmony. Anyone can learn to press the keys in a certain order.

@@supdude414 Stop it. As a trained percussionist for many years, I can say that yes, basic piano songs can be learned with relative ease through repetition and muscle memory. But the pieces that Ryan learned to play in such a short period of time...thats unheard of. This guy could've legitimately have become a VERY accomplished pianist instead of an actor if that path was the one he chose. That kind of raw talent and ability is SOOOOO rare, that most couldnt even comprehend it enough to be able to appreciate it enough. This man is a fckin BEAST.

As a pianist myself , building up from nothing to this in just 4 months is absolutely incredible and would love to see Gosling go further from here . Some other time perhaps

You have more smarts and proper technique while Ryan does still play beautifully but he doesn't properly know how the notes work, which notes work, how to improvise properly, etc. He focused only on those songs while you can learn any song given a little bit of time and effort since you have the prior knowledge of how it works.

Wow... Ryan is incredible. That takes commitment and talent: hard, hard work. How did he not win an Oscar? He was amazing as Sebastion?! Also, RIP hand double.

Executive music producer on the film, Marius de Vries: "One of the first scenes in the shooting schedule was his first big piano solo in the club, and I’ll never forget the astonished silence which settled on the room at the end of his first take. It was kind of miraculous. What he played was a very musically intelligent approximation of the difficult sections, with perhaps a few wrong notes here and there, but the basic melodies he had totally down. So even though the piano parts you hear in the film are played by Randy, the visual representation, every single pianistic hand gesture, was Ryan’s. It’s an astonishing achievement that when you watch the movie, you don’t for a second question that Ryan’s character plays the parts.”

That’s right. As a musician I’m convinced by his hand movements as they’re spot on and I’m sure the film crew know how to capture these well… but I’m telling you there’s no way the actual sound he is playing would be any close to the actual music you hear. They’d even do the same thing with more experienced musicians

How he managed to achieve that level of playing in three months is truly astonishing and mind blowing. He is a natural.

Rachel Wilson You are correct. All the music was recorded by an orchestra before filming. He played along to that track, with it dubbed over him in post. That's why they referred to the other guy as a hand double, not a full musician. All they recorded during shooting was the shots of his hands, not the audio.

Me too. It's Nov. 2020. I've seen the film three times, and am a pianist myself. I am blown away by his proficiency and talent. Not to mention his work ethic. Maybe I just don't want to face it, but I think he must be downplaying his piano skills. Maybe he didn't read music, but he has played. Regardless, it's amazing.

Please don't compare. Ryan had a challenge and engulfed it. Nothing more and nothing less. It shows me he takes his craft very seriously........And we all get to enjoy it!

to the people saying he's faking, what you see him play on screen in the movie is not always what you hear through your speakers- even if he was a virtuoso they do it in post for audio reasons

Obviously these aren’t live takes though right? He’s playing as close as he possibly can, obviously with mistakes, and they overdub the original recording which was done by musicians. It just LOOKs very good in the sense that he’s playing close enough for it to look like he’s playing what you’re hearing himself. That’s my guess and I think that’s fair. I believe it

Do you know how hard it is to match a live piano take with an overdubbed piano take? Lol Maybe sometimes, but when you go into any improv, you absolutely have to capture it live, and there's no reason why you shouldn't want a live performance over an overdubbed one anyway, especially when you have a grand piano, where you can literally mic it from the inside, or from the bottom, and also use a room mic. For the close-hand shots, you can also put a few a few mics above the piano with the lid open.

This is interesting. For years I believed that he learned how to play piano from scratch, which was seriously impressive! But I’ve recently discovered that back in 2009, Ryan Gosling and his pal recorded an album where Ryan played the piano - it’s called ‘In The Room Where You Sleep’ by Dead Man’s Bones. Ryan already had some level of piano playing ability before doing ‘La La Land’, which makes sense why he was able to learn all of this in a short amount of time. No discredit to him-it’s still a remarkable task. However, now it seems more credible that he was able to do it because he had already played piano before, just not at this complexity.

How's it going? The way I see it, everyone gets three slots of time while maintaining social and mental well-being. You have your job (this is 25-40 hours a week), you have your career time (this is where a second job, extra work, and school come in) and you have self improvement (music, gym, hobbies, art). Assuming the split looks something like 65 hours sleep, 40 hours work, 15-20 hours school, and 15 hours for hobbies. This leaves 23 hours for you to see your friends, your grandparents, and your life partner. If I was a gambling man, I would say you succeeded :)

@@mikedowd66 Ryan worked for 4 months to learn these parts and to copy the actual piano playing which was most-likely done by another pianist in the studio. I've watched Ryan play in the film and he's missing some notes, but his technique and understanding of how one actually plays the piano cannot be learned in 4 months, as he has difficult movements and fingering down very well. What is misleading, by those involved in La La Land, is their downplaying the fact that he was already a pianist, in order to make this backstory (regarding him learning to play piano in 4 months) more sensationalistic, which is done all the time when promoting films, and those who star in them. There is a huge difference between learning to play specific piano parts, as opposed to learning the techniques in order to play those parts believably, and he already had the techniques down before La La Land. Because he already knew how to play piano. The truth to all of this is that he learned those "specific parts" for La La Land, not that he learned to play piano in 4 months. That's the real truth.
