Off the coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean, La Gomera is a tiny Canary Island belonging to the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Nature lovers are lured by the island’s unique flora, spectacular scenery and the incredible UNESCO-listed Garajonay National Park. With stunning landscapes ranging from dramatic cliffs and pebble beaches to magnificent views of neighbouring Tenerife and its mighty Mount Teide, it’s easy to see the appeal of this tiny island.
Follow hiking and walking trails through laurel forest and across lush valleys that lead to the dormant volcanic centre. Head north to sample the fruits of the fertile barrancos or venture south through the deserted villages by the Valle Gran Rey. Mountain biking, bird watching and whale-watching are also popular activities here. The charming Jardin Tecina offers a stunning clifftop location on the sunnier south of the island and a fantastic range of sports and activities - perfect for a relaxing or active escape.
Visit the island's capital, San Sebastián, to see the simple house where Christopher Columbus famously once lodged and watch elegant yachts anchor at the marina. Buy fresh fruit and vegetables as well as home-made jams at the local market, head to one of the town's beaches - Playa de San Sebastian and Playa de la Cueva, or stop for photos at Mirador de las Carboneras, a lookout with views of the town and Hermigua Valley.
The local bus company, Guagua Gomera, provides a comprehensive network across the island between the valleys and the capital town of San Sebastián with buses reliable although only running on a timetable of every couple of hours. Car hire is also a good option, and most of the time, at your chosen destination, you’ll be hiking, walking or swimming.
As can be expected of a tiny island in the Atlantic Ocean, fresh fish and seafood are specialities. Expect varying menus depending on the day’s catch as well as meats including chicken and lamb alongside plenty of wholesome vegetarian cuisine and local wine. You’ll find restaurants with spellbinding clifftop views, home-cooked hearty food in family-run trattorias and not a fast-food chain or brand name in sight.
La Gomera
Al largo della costa dell'Africa, nell'Oceano Atlantico, La Gomera è una minuscola isola delle Canarie appartenente alla provincia di Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Gli amanti della natura sono attirati dalla flora unica dell'isola, dai paesaggi spettacolari e dall'incredibile Parco Nazionale di Garajonay, dichiarato Patrimonio dell'Umanità dall'UNESCO. Con paesaggi mozzafiato che vanno da scogliere spettacolari e spiagge di ciottoli a magnifiche vedute della vicina Tenerife e del suo possente Monte Teide.
Attraverso sentieri escursionistici e pedonali si arriva alla foresta di Lauro-Silva e in valli lussureggianti che conducono al centro del vulcano dormiente. In direzione nord potrete assaggiare i frutti dei fertili barrancos o avventurarvi a sud attraverso i villaggi deserti della Valle Gran Rey. Anche la mountain bike, il birdwatching e il whale watching sono attività popolari qui.
Visitando la capitale dell'isola, San Sebastián, è possibile vedere la casa semplice dove un tempo alloggiava Cristoforo Colombo e osservare gli eleganti yacht ancorati al porto turistico. Si possono acquistare frutta, verdura fresca e marmellate fatte in casa al mercato locale, ammirare le spiagge della città: Playa de San Sebastian e Playa de la Cueva, oppure fermarsi per le foto al Mirador de las Carboneras, un belvedere con vista la città e la valle di Hermigua.
La compagnia di autobus locale, Guagua Gomera, fornisce una rete completa in tutta l'isola. Anche il noleggio auto è una buona opzione e in quasi tutte le destinazioni prescelte dai turisti.
Cosa si mangia: i menù possono essere diversi a seconda del pescato del giorno, nonché carni tra cui pollo e agnello, oltre a una ricca cucina vegetariana e vino locale. Vi sono ristoranti con viste mozzafiato sulla scogliera, cibo sostanzioso cucinato in casa nelle trattorie e non sono presenti catene di fast food.
