"La Catedral" was composed for classical guitar in 1921 (Montevideo) by Agustín Barrios Mangoré. Barrios wrote originally two movements ("Andante Religioso" - "Allegro Solemne") and later on a Preludio was added - Preludio Saudade. It is fascinating the amount of versions we have listened of this masterpiece overtime, mostly due to the variety of interpretations Barrios did of it.
Before we move onto to the analysis itself, I would like to refer that sources are enormously valuable but not all of them are reliable. La Catedral suffered modifications throughout Barrios' life, having been rewritten in 1938 (La Habana), in 1939 (Costa Rica) and in 1943 (El Salvador), for instance. In this video I will be analysing and comparing which seems to be the 1938 manuscript with the existent publications by Richard Stover and Jesús Benites.
This video is divided in 4 parts:
00:00 Introduction
01:43 Analysis of the form and repetitions
03:40 Comparison of the manuscript with editions
06:18 Insight on analysis, interpretation and fingerings

Verdad! Muchas gracias Rodrigo :)
At this point, there can be no "definitive" edition of La Cathedral, one which conforms to Barrios' original intentions. For those intentions are not completely known, thus consigning these various 'editions' to the realm of logical inference, and musical taste.
pls analyse other amazing Agustin Barrios music too. well done
Bruno, te felicito, que bueno que este video, sos un genio, gracias por compartirlo.

Forgive my ignorance. I am not a classical guitarist but have recently discovered Barrios' music & have fallen in love with its beauty! Do we not have the original recording of this piece to guide us so there should be no need to analyze manuscripts? Please help with explanation...Thank you!

hello ! yes you can find very old recordings of barrios playing himself this piece. However you can’t hear very well because those recordings were made in 1925-1930 with the firsts “phonographs” and barrios didn’t care about his pieces’ conservation. today only ~200 pieces survived the ages but he made approximately 300 pieces. (sorry for my bad english) have a nice day!
I wish the performer played the version that he prefers -- it would have been very interesting to hear it.

Correct! Good that you mention it Isaac, Díaz´s edition also differs from this manuscript indeed
I looked at the "manuscript" that's listed on your site. IMHO It just looks like either Stover's original handwritten version, or someone else's among Mangore's circle - nothing about it strikes me as original to Barrios' hand at all. The signature on the Prelude doesn't look like Barrios' typical signature as he always closes the spiral and it's not clear what it says. Even if that movement is authentic it doesn't prove the Allegro is. Maybe he changed the Allegro movement later? But if so, where is a recording that accompanies and proves this? There is are a few major differences in this "manuscript" version and the original recording. The most important : either the original is entirely in 3/8, or he adds a 3/8 anacrusis in the middle of the piece. The measure before the "anacrusis" ligado half measure is completely different and contains a quarter note B power chord (B5) and an eighth note rest that feel like it completes a 6/8 measure followed by the anacrusis- it doesn't resemble Stover's version at all, which this "manuscript" does besides one or two other measures that might have been later editorial changes. For my part I prefer his original recorded performance, even if it does have an odd metrical feel with that 3/8 anacrusis in the middle section.
Mucha habla y poca acción, al grano viejo
I thought this was like a tutorial to play it...
Thank you!
